Chapter 262: The Funeral
"So, uhh..."
Lyne held every screaming cell in her body to stay put. Just hearing Boris speak was sending her on edge, even after she thought that she had made some progress with her own prejudice. After everything that had happened, with the man actually saving her life once, she owed him at least this much.
"Uhh..." Boris kept on stammering, Lyne noting his constant fidgeting as she waited. "Can we talk?"
Lyne raised an eyebrow at his words. She already knew what the elephant in the room was, but she could at least hope that it wasn’t the case. If only to spare themselves even more awkwardness. "About what?"
Boris clearly struggled with his words as he replied. "About... err... us?"
For some reason, a part of her felt a pang of excitement run through her chest. Her first instinct was to flinch, however, and she could barely stop herself from hiding the slightest grimace at Boris’s proposal.
And unfortunately, it seemed as if the man actually caught her.
"I-I know you offered yourself to me as soon as I offered you Danos’s head, but I guess that’s taking a while..." he awkwardly asserted. "But... That doesn’t mean we can’t go on a date?"
Lyne blinked at his proposal. She really didn’t know what to say, but what else was there for her to do? She inadvertently offered up her hand to the man out of her own burning desire for revenge. She haven’t really thought about it all at the moment, but now that it was happening right in front of her, she now had no choice but to accept it. Cause why wouldn’t she? Boris had shown his dedication time and again, and it went a long way with having her warm up to him.
It also didn’t help that she wasn’t someone that could so easily break her word once she gave it out. It was just not in her nature to not honor a deal that she herself made with someone.
"I... I suppose," Lyne breathed out, her eyes falling to the floor as she avoided eye contact. "Although, the situation has changed so drastically that you might not even need to kill him yourself. With the Convel Society essentially under our control, King Nathan could probably just snap his fingers and the bastard will be brought to justice."
Even without looking at him, she knew that Boris flinched at her words. She had just invalidated his one ticket to somehow win her over, and she knew that it was callous on her part. But that was simply who she was... She was blunt and logical, and while her emotions got the better of her, it’ll simply serve as a reminder for her to better. In a way, perhaps she could learn to do so by actually going through with her offer, even if Boris technically hadn’t given her his part of the deal.
"I-I see..." Boris weakly mumbled out. "In that case, then-"
"We’ll have to agree on an exact date," Lyne cut him off before he could start sulking. "I’m... not gonna be comfortable, but I’ll try my best."
At her words, her potential mate seemingly lit up with hope in his eyes. It wasn’t much, she thought, but it was still more than enough for her to not feel as bad.
"...Thank you, Lyne."
"No problem," she quickly replied, her gaze trying its best to be level with his. "Just make sure to, well, not set me off."
"That’s more than okay with me," Boris chuckled. He then moved to give her a hug, only to quickly stop himself as he scratched at his cheek. "I suppose it’s a date then?"
Letting off a sigh, Lyne flashed him an earnest smile as she replied, "Sure, Boris."

After a few days of cleaning up, as well as a boatload of preparation to make sure that everything would go smoothly, Raine finally decided to hold her father’s funeral. It was a small affair, with only some of the highest members of the Moon Clan being in attendance in the King’s Chamber. Well, some of those members didn’t even appear, leaving only her and her Moonlight Squad to be the ones to be in attendance. Nathan was also present, but he made sure to stay at the back and away from the general gathering at all times.
"Still can’t believe he’s gone," Raine found herself mumbling out. "To think that this is what it all amounted to..."
Her team kept their solemn silence. A part of her still blamed them for being complicit in her father’s death by helping Nathan, but she could also understand why that was the case. She would’ve ordered them to stay still, possibly letting Nathan’s plan fail just so she had the peace of mind that her father would be safe. She knew that she probably could’ve died inside if it happened, but at least she’d be spared from this much heartache.
The funeral rites had been sparse, having only done the barest minimum so as to not stretch the Clan’s resources thin after such a grueling war. Not that Raine even wanted the validation of having a lot of people attend the proceedings anyway. In the end, Marcus was buried in the Clan graveyard. Just beside the main mausoleum at his behest. He might not have been a true-blooded Yue, but he had still been a king at some point in time. It was only proper that he was given the respect that his title brought to his name. And as dirt and rock were poured over his father’s casket, Raine tossed in one last flower at the man who raised her as his own.
"You might not be my biological father, but I’ll always think of you as such," Raine solemnly whispered out. "Thank you... For everything... Even if you’re gone, I’ll always think fondly of you..."
And thus, the man at was once Marcus was buried. With Raine in attendance, it was all that was truly needed to have his spirit rest easy in the afterlife.
