Chapter 258: New King

Chapter 258: New King

The world stopped right then and there.

Raine did nothing except cry her heart out. She didn’t know how long she stayed in the garden with her father’s unmoving head lying on her lap, but what she did know was that she still couldn’t believe what just happened. Even with all of the evidence stating otherwise, there was just no way that her father just died with her not being able to do anything about it.

"Boss, please get a hold of yourself," Lyne pleadingly whispered as she tried to pull Raine back to reality. "We’re still technically under attack."

Whether Raine heard Lyne or not, she didn’t show it as she no longer cared about her surroundings. As far as she knew, the world consisted of herself and her dead father as she struggled to come to terms with reality. It truly seemed as if Raine was rendered catatonic by Marcus’s death.

But when she somehow heard of the commotion to take her father away with the rest of the dead, she immediately sprang out like a coiled snake.

"Nobody touches him!" the grieving princess wailed. "Do so, and all of you will die!"

It was a sorry sight to beheld. By the sidelines, Nathan held his brand of grief as he watched his mate cry her heart out. He knew the pain of loss, and it was only fair that she had the chance to properly let out her grievances.

"Let her be," he stoically declared, making himself appear larger as he barred those that might want to take the dead king’s corpse. "When she’s done, she’s done."

Surely, Raine had her own ideas on how to arrange the funeral proceedings. It was best that she was left alone for the time being.

"Shouldn’t we just kill them all now?"

Nathan raised an eyebrow as he heard Sasha chime out her bloody suggestion. It was an understandable suggestion, but having just gotten their objective, there was no need to be that thorough in their victory.

"There’s no need," he soundly spoke out, giving the violent woman a knowing glance as he continued. "They’re already beaten. What use is there to kill them all now?"

Raising an eyebrow, Sasha seemed to be hesitant even as she pushed her agenda. "They can still mount a counterattack if we let them recover. With their King dead and their Princess still alive, your claim can still be contested."

Nathan shook his head, "Raine is defenseless. She’s lost the will to fight."

As much as he hated saying it, the fact was that it was simply the truth. Even if the Moon Clan could somehow miraculously recover fast enough to launch a counterattack, Raine would most certainly not bother with such a thing in the first place. Even if she had a claim to the throne, she’d more likely to simply step aside and let him rule in her stead. That was what his innerself was telling him.

"Which is exactly why we should do kill her and all of her supporters," Sasha reasoned out. "With her being like this, there’s no way that-"

"There will be no more bloodshed tonight."

Nathan’s declaration echoed throughout the garden, silencing any and all detractors from ever voicing out their concerns. There was simply no other reason to continue this pointless war. With Marcus dead, the entirety of the Moon Clan falls to the immediate heir available to claim it. And with Raine still out of commision, the chain of command fell to him, whether his new subjects wanted him to have it or not.

"As of this day, the Moon Clan is now under my command!" Nathan bellowed, addressing all that could hear the sound of his voice. "As the rightful ruler of this clan, I officially declared this war to be over!"

A flurry of commotion wracked the entirety of the garden, his werewolf subjects quickly stopping the fight while the few stragglers still fighting for the Moon Clan all turned to look at him. Nathan was sure that the news of the Moon Clan’s defeat was still making its way through the entirety of the compound. With their fighters looking utterly confused, he had to take charge of the situation.

"To all of the Moon Clan members that can hear the sound of my voice, and to those that might be watching from afar, heed my words," Nathan yelled out, making sure to make eye contact with the soldiers still fighting, as well as with the cameras that might be recording. "As a show of goodwill, I am allowing you all to swear fealty to me. Do so, and you shall be accepted with open arms. Refuse, and you shall either die or be banished from the clan for good."

As his words rang all throughout the clan, a sweeping breeze of change seemed to blanket the entirety of the garden. One by one, the Moon Clan soldiers dropped their weapons, electing to bow their heads to their new ruler as Nathan nodded at them in turn. With each second that passed, more and more began accepting his new rule. Even those that seemed to have fought the hardest against them had no choice but to accept, and some even kneeled in deference to the new King’s right to lead.

On the sidelines, Janus didn’t know what to do. His king was dead, and he just knew that his marriage to Raine died along with him. Somehow making eye contact with his tentative king, the doctor knew that Nathan’s second chance was also meant for him. He could easily choose to bend the knee, to simply accept and allow this new King to lead him and continue on with his life. But on the other hand...

"What to do..."

Janus knew that he stood no chance against fighting him now. He also knew that he’d be useless without the Moon Clan’s resources backing him up. Looking at the new King, the doctor knew that he had to make a decision. Whether or not he still manages to get Raine, his choice would inevitably change his life.
