Chapter 242: Memories of her

A few minutes after Raine’s recording ended, Nathan finally opened his eyes. Blinking, a frown formed on his forehead upon seeing Aspen, Decan, and Davin practically hovering over him.

"What the hell is going on?!" Nathan hissed.

The three didn’t budge despite their King’s protests. Their eyes were calculative, obviously assessing Nathan’s reactions and possible next movements. With a pensive look, the three wondered if the memory-loss powder even worked in the first place. After all, it was the first time they’d even heard of such a substance. And on top of that, the chants that came off from the recording sounded like they were from a different language as well. As such, they really didn’t have an inkling of what Raine was saying at the time.

"How are you feeling? Do you remember anything?"

Speaking up, it was Davin who had the guts to ask their King first. In truth, he was way too worried for what Nathan could possibly be feeling. After all, if the powder didn’t work, then he would most certainly go berserk again, and he doubted that they could stop Nathan at that point.

"I don’t know, my head feels like it’s spinning around," Nathan ground as he sat back up on his bed. Getting himself back on his feet, the three remained at the ready in their positions, as if cornering Nathan in case he tried something else. "Why are we all here anyway? And for goodness sake, give me space to breathe!!!"

The King barked out in confusion as he looked around. Based on what he was seeing, they were obviously inside the high-tech confinement room inside the Blue Moon Pack compound.

"You don’t remember anything?" Davin inquired.

Nathan’s eyebrows snapped in annoyance as he growled, "Will I ask you all of this if I remember a thing, Vin?!"

Davin’s eyes brightened. In that instant, he greeted, "Oh goody. Welcome back to the old you."

Nathan shook his head at the nonsensical answer he just got. Instead, he frowned as he asked, "So, would anyone care enough to tell me what just happened and why we’re all here in the first place? And why I’m here, for that matter?" He then took a closer look at Aspen, his lips smacking as he noted, "You’re wounded... I... did that... I remember doing that, but why did I even do such a thing?"

"Don’t worry about it. It’s nothing but a scratch," Aspen replied, staring at their King with as much reassurance as he could possibly muster.

"Anyway, we proceeded with the exchange of hostages upon your orders, my King," Decan quickly elaborated, making sure to divert the attention away from the inconsistencies in their story. "The Moon Clan Princess and one of her teammates traded themselves for my daughter, Crissa, and Lucio’s son, Cole."

He then summarized what had just happened, tweaking some of the details just enough in accordance with Raine’s advice. Initially, the tale was set in a way that would make Raine a villain, but Decan decided against such a decision; changing his course in the details and making Davin lift his brows in surprise. However, the vampire didn’t bother to stop the former king.

’Would it have been better if he followed the Princess’s instructions?’ Davin inwardly thought. ’Making her the villain could be an advantage for Uncle whenever he finally sieged the Moon Clan.’ It was an obvious tactic, but then he still understood why Decan would choose to narrate things differently. Decan’s respect for the Princess had gotten just that high, but that was also because the Princess had also earned his respect.

"So you’re saying that the Moon Clan Princess used some sort of memory-loss powder on me so that she could return to Marcus? And that’s all so I can think rationally?" Nathan confusedly mumbled with a frown. However, a wry smirk replaced his confusion as he mumbled, "Heh... Then I guess the powder was very effective. I don’t remember a single thing about her at all..."

"If there’s anything, she’s your mate and you marked her," Boris chimed in. "If you think about it, she did you a great favor, my King. She didn’t want you to sacrifice innocent lives just for your love for her. She didn’t want the Convel Society as a whole to lose its trust in you as a ruler. And seeing how calm you look right now, I guess the powder and her chants were indeed effective," he added, making sure to emphasize the fact that Raine meant Nathan no harm. Instead, he highlighted the fact that what was done was needed since Nathan couldn’t get a proper hold of his emotion.

"Well, I don’t have any memories of her. As in none at all," Nathan whispered out, only feeling a sharp pain in his head whenever he tried recalling his moments with the woman that they called Raine Yue, the Moon Clan Princess, and the Bloody-Eyed Hunter. Parsing through his memories, it was as if there were numerous missing fragments and gaps in his mind. In truth, he would rather not think about all of this at the moment. The subject brought tremendous and unbearable pain inside his head, and there were a lot more important things to think about than this mystery woman that messed with his head.

"Let’s not talk about her for now. My head feels like it’ll explode at any minute if we continue talking about her," Nathan whispered out.

At their King’s instructions, the three men decided to keep their lips shut and stop talking. Silently, they watched their King calm and compose himself, a few sighs escaping his lips as he shrugged with his shoulders.

After a few moments, Nathan let a smirk slowly rest upon his lips as he scorned, "So Marcus is already awake. I’m sure he won’t waste any time in trying to stall their attack, all while preparing for an early attack on our territory." His voice then took on a serious tone as he added, "We mustn’t stand idle. We should plan our next move at this instant. By the end of it, his devious life should be snuffed out before he can even make a move against us."

Davin rolled his eyes at Nathan’s declaration as he mumbled, "Can it wait? It’s been a tiring night, Uncle. Let’s all have a good night’s rest and just talk about it this morning, yeah?" He then took a look at his wristwatch, "Oh, and I guess it’s almost morning... You should really get some rest then. You’ll have a busy day ahead of you for sure..."

"Wait, I think it’s better that our King gets her letter," Boris suggested. "I think it’s the last thing we can do for all of her help."

Looking at Decan, the man quickly understood the man’s intentions. Decan too, believed that there was no harm in giving Nathan Raine’s letters. Nathan looked calm enough with having no recollection of the woman, after all. And that was despite them telling him that she was his mate and that he had marked her already.

With a nod, the former king grabbed the piece of paper in his pocket and handed it over to Nathan. The current King then accepted the letter and put it inside his pocket without even looking at it.

"You won’t be reading it?" Boris unknowingly voiced out.

Nathan frowned as he scoffed, "Why? Do you want me to read it in front of you all?"

At the obvious reply, Boris ended up scratching his head with an awkward smile. In truth, he was honestly curious about how effective the powder truly was. He wanted to see if Nathan had really forgotten about Raine. And if he really did with his mind, then was his heart also affected?

After a few moments, Nathan growled and dismissed everyone, "You should all rest. And let’s get out of this room already. It’s getting stuffy."

At that, they all left the room without another word. Nathan walked back to his own residence with a blank expression, his thoughts still sorting themselves out as he walked.

"Raine..." Nathan murmured and he unconsciously touched his chest as a sharp pain struck deep within his heart. He never believed in the traditional mate thing like mate pull and markings but it seemed like he experienced it like how the others emphasized just a while ago... ’What kind of a joke is that? A mate from my nemesis?’ he scoffed with a frown.
