Chapter 88 Medicine
Chapter 88: Chapter 88 Medicine
It takes almost a day to get from Beijing to Luoxia Town.
Luoxia Town has an ambiguous status in Yun City. It’s not exactly poor, but it certainly isn’t as wealthy as Qingqu County. As you enter the town, mountain roads stretch on both sides and when you arrive, it’s nighttime, forcing Rong Zhi to slow down.
She drives cautiously, and upon entering the village-town, the surrounding buildings become old and weathered. The phone rings, and Rong Zhi puts it on speaker, "Bai Su?"
"The little brother just left me behind and ran off." Bai Su’s side is quite quiet, with only occasional gentle wind sounds.
"Speak human language."
Rong Zhi grips the steering wheel with one hand, while the other reaches for the storage compartment, pulling out a pack of cigarettes, preparing to light up. Bai Su’s voice rings from the phone, "Your throat isn’t doing well, don’t smoke too much, eat candy."
"You seem to like governing me a lot."
From drinking to smoking, whatever she wants to do, he won’t let her.
Bai Su’s low chuckle comes through the receiver, slightly distorted, but the teasing tone is undiminished: "Who asked Auntie to give me the privilege of watching over you? Little student needs to learn to listen to the teacher."
Rong Zhi chuckles, retrieves the lighter, and lights the cigarette. The flame burns at the white tip, she leisurely takes a drag, and the fatigue from driving all day suddenly dissipates, "Nothing more, hanging up."
She just hangs up the call.
Upon arriving in Luoxia Town, Rong Zhi doesn’t head to the old home but continues driving in another direction until a tall mountain appears ahead.
The road up the mountain has been made accessible for vehicles in the past two years. She drives up, surrounded by lush, green forests. Occasionally, one or two mischievous animals jump out, and she deftly avoids them.
After another ten minutes, Rong Zhi stops the car and gets out.
The view ahead clears up, revealing a three-story villa surrounded by a fence, with the gate open, faintly showing a cultivated vegetable field inside. Behind the villa stands a high tower.
The tower is nine stories tall, entirely white, mysterious under the moonlight.
Rong Zhi walks in with her bag, her sharp eyes catching an old man still working hard in the vegetable field. She narrows her eyes and changes her course, heading towards him.
Once she’s near, she bends down to pick up a small bucket and helps the old man fertilize the cabbages.
Speaking of which, although Fu Liang grows mostly cabbages, the fertilizers for these cabbages are made from failed medicine materials by the three siblings, used excessively, even the cabbages have medicinal properties.
Fu Liang, while picking vegetables for tonight’s dish, notices someone beside him and naturally says, "Back already? Why so early today? Your elder sister is returning to the mountain tonight, go check if there’s a mature hen in the backyard, slaughter it later to make soup for your elder sister."
Rong Zhi pours another spoonful of fertilizer, "Hmm."
"Did you catch a cold? Why is your voice so hoarse?" Fu Liang asks suspiciously.
"No cold."
Fu Liang: ?
This voice sounds familiar.
Like his eldest disciple’s exceptionally pleasant and distinctive tone.
"Zhi Zhi?"
Fu Liang, wearing plain clothes suitable for farming, has a kind and amiable face with long whiskers that move as he talks.
Perhaps due to dealing with medicine for too long, his body carries a strong scent of traditional Chinese medicine.
Turning to see his obedient eldest disciple, he widens his small eyes, scrutinizes Rong Zhi for a moment, and then smiles broadly, "It’s really you! I thought you would arrive at midnight, what time is it now?"
Rong Zhi smirks, preparing to speak when a motorcycle roars at the villa’s entrance suddenly sounds.
At the sound, she glances sideways.
Just outside the door, sitting on a motorcycle, is a boy dressed entirely in black, with a cap pressed low, shading the upper half of his face, revealing only a defined, exquisite jawline, and a pair of lips rosy against pale skin.
He cuts the engine, casually stretching his long legs to the ground, twists the key, and walks towards the villa.
His presence is cold, almost tangible.
"Just in time, did you buy the crabs I asked for?" Fu Liang asks the boy.
The boy raises the items in his hand, says indifferently, "Bought them."
He then looks over to Fu Liang’s side and pauses slightly, "Senior sister?"
Rong Zhi nods.
Haven’t seen him for a while, the junior has grown taller.
The wind rises suddenly in the woods, pressing Rong Zhi’s loose sweatshirt against her body, revealing her figure, with excessively long bangs whipping against her face. She frowns, reaching to push her hair back.
Something hard suddenly drops on her head.
She looks up, meeting Xu Ningxing’s gaze, "It’s okay, we’re going inside soon."
He only said, but doesn’t take the hat off.
Xu Ningxing frowns slightly, "The feng shui in Beijing isn’t nurturing; senior sister looks thinner than in the video."
Without the cap, Xu Ningxing’s face is fully exposed to the air.
His short silver hair, free from the hat’s constraint, glows under the moonlight, those dark eyes like stars in vast night, unhurried, his skin whiter than his silver hair, lips red and moist.
Pale yet exquisite, cool yet aloof.
Fu Liang finishes gathering cabbages and leads them into the villa.
The entrance hall of the villa leads to guest rooms, with two rooms on the second and third floors, and a dedicated small medical laboratory on another level.
The cooking task naturally falls on Xu Ningxing.
Fu Liang and Rong Zhi head to the basement laboratory.
Both change into lab coats.
Rong Zhi wears gloves, examining the microbes in the petri dish under the microscope.
"Zhi Zhi, take a look at this."
Fu Liang hands over a thick document, the first page marked ’H-01’ experiment results.
She closely reviews it, as Fu Liang takes over her work and comments from the side, "This drug affects the nervous system, but exactly how is yet uncertain."
"But from the current experimental results, without suppression drugs to control H-01’s medicinal properties or eradication, the nervous system of a person is bound to be damaged, leading ultimately to brain death."
Rong Zhi’s grip tightens on the experimental results, "Does Master have any leads?"
"No," Fu Liang shakes his head, expression serious, "For the past three years, both of us have analyzed and tested H-01, its composition is very unique. Unless we find unused H-01, developing antidote drugs will be difficult."
The atmosphere turns somewhat silent.
Rong Zhi taps the experimental result with her fingers, becoming more agitated as she flips each page.
Rong Wei, even near death, managed to ensnare her and her mother, truly despicable.
If they can’t find the original H-01, He Songzhi could die from the drug in her system.
But now...
A sudden phone ring interrupts Rong Zhi’s contemplation.
She frowns, coming back to her senses, and takes out her phone to see the number displayed. Instantly, without thinking, she hangs up.
The caller seems unprepared for her to hang up, waiting two seconds before trying again with a video call through WeChat.
Rong Zhi presses down the irritated brow, impatiently answering the video call.
The other side doesn’t give her a chance to act up, speaking directly with grievance: "Little brother, I’m lost."
Rong Zhi: "..."
Her gaze falls on the video, where the lighting behind the man is quite dim, seemingly on a street lacking people, together with his pitiful words, casting a rather desolate scene.
"Where are you?" Rong Zhi unbuttons the lab coat with one hand.
The shop on the street behind the man looks somewhat familiar, Rong Zhi’s fingers pause.
Could it be what she’s thinking?
