Chapter 569: Chapter 562 Steel Impact
You Zixing fed Gao Yuan an entire kettle of water, then he could only go and search for more.
He was surprised that Gao Yuan could drink an entire kettle of water, but since Gao Yuan could drink it, You Zixing knew he must find more as long as he was still able to move.
Crawling around, You Zixing searched seven bodies and found five water bottles.
Only seven bodies were left, the others had vanished in the recent artillery barrage, gone.
Waiting a while, You Zixing would feed Gao Yuan a sip of water. That’s all he could do, anything else like bandaging Gao Yuan’s wounds was pointless and unnecessary, for even the world’s best doctor, were they to arrive, would be helpless now.
You Zixing could only wait, wait for his comrades to come to their rescue.
In the meantime, You Zixing checked his own leg. He found it wasn’t broken; it was probably just sprained or bruised. Whatever it was, it wasn’t a severe injury, nothing too serious.
So, he waited, to see whether zombies or rescue would arrive first.
To run with Gao Yuan or hide, You Zixing no longer harbored any hope for that.
Because Gao Yuan seemed still alive, yet fragile as a piece of crisply shattered porcelain, ready to break at a touch, You Zixing didn’t dare to risk moving him, even if he had the strength to do so.
Unless Gao Yuan truly died, became a corpse, then You Zixing would be at an advantage, at least he could hide. Surviving a bit longer was worthwhile but the problem was, Gao Yuan refused to die.
Time ticked away slowly, and yet the zombies and monsters never came.
But the sound of guns and cannons had started and scarcely stopped since.
The gunfire was constant, and cannon fire would erupt in sporadic, intense bursts, the distance sounding near then far, but altogether, it was closing in.
The Uranus Troops were indeed fighting for their lives, sparing none of their treasures, pulling out all the stops.
The long-range artillery was suppressing the enemy’s fire, and the combat vehicles specially designed for zombies were surely by this time all deployed into the city.
A combat vehicle is not simply an alternate name for a tank. It is a weapon redesigned and manufactured by the Solar System Company specifically to combat zombies, essentially useless against humans, but against zombies, it was a massacre machine.
Starting with a high-powered truck, they welded steel mesh over the windows for protection, and the rear and both sides of the vehicle were fitted with two firing ports each.
Unless the zombies had the ability to bite through metal, this kind of combat vehicle wouldn’t be breached. The machine guns inside could keep firing continuously.
The modification was not complex; you only needed a high-powered truck platform. The retrofit could be completed in a day, so the Uranus Troops now had twelve vehicles specifically for combating zombies.
To call them combat vehicles was an understatement; they were better described as mobile ammunition depots. Each vehicle carried twelve machine guns, and the vehicle was filled with nothing but ammunition. The machine guns rotated use through six firing ports, and with thirty-six spare barrels, to expend the hundred thousand bullets this vehicle could carry would indeed be quite the effort.
The chariot is essentially an enlarged armored car, but why not just use armored cars, you might ask? The reason is simple: armored cars are cramped in space. Although they offer good protection, that protection is excessive against zombies. The limited space means that crew inside the cabin can’t maintain continuous fire. Using rifles is basically pointless, and while machine guns have a higher rate of fire, they carry too little ammunition.
Of course, armored cars are certainly available and continue to play an extremely important role, just not as weapons specifically designed to target zombies.
Dozens of tanks, dozens of armored cars, along with artillery and specially modified chariots, have little significance when facing a million zombies.
The entire Malakal Region only has a population of a hundred thousand, and Malakal City itself has about seventy to eighty thousand people, including a large portion of the military. But not all military forces are stationed in the city, and after the attack by the Snake People, no one in the city could survive. However, not everyone became a zombie, so the number of zombies in Malakal at most won’t exceed fifty thousand.
With only fifty thousand zombies, it’s possible to consider completely eradicating them.
The Solar System Company is fully capable of wiping out all the zombies in Malakal; they’re just not willing to play the role of the Sanitation Worker pulling chestnuts out of the fire. However, if necessary, they can launch a strong attack and take down Malakal.
Now, it has become necessary. The Uranus Troops fought desperately to save Gao Yuan, and finally, they launched a general offensive when no one was willing to attack Malakal first.
Turning a feint into a general attack is common, and it’s normal for a diversionary force to become the main force, because Gao Yuan is worth it.
In Malakel City now, zombies are not the biggest problem; it’s the monsters. However, the bats in the air pose no threat to a purely armored force. The number of zombies is not large, they can be flattened and crushed by firepower. Only the Armored Beasts can easily destroy tanks, and those medium-sized monsters can pose a threat to the chariots, but with the protection of tanks and armored cars, it’s not a big issue.
Furthermore, the Uranus Troops are just the frontline main attack force; there are reserves arranged in the second line.
Once the main attack force goes in, the second line of reserves will inevitably follow. As long as the Sanitation Workers still have the strength to fight, a decisive battle will take place when both sides are prepared, though it will unfold completely beyond the original plan.
You Zixing judged that the dense sounds of tank main gun fire earlier were probably concentrated fire on the Armored Beasts, and the results should be pretty good, because the tanks are still firing. That means the tanks haven’t been completely destroyed by the Armored Beasts. On the contrary, it naturally means that the Armored Beasts have been killed.
As for the machine gun fire, it hasn’t stopped since it started, indicating that the chariots have been firing continuously.
The way zombies attack, under heavy fire suppression, can indeed create mountains of corpses and seas of blood. You Zixing believes that the sound he hears waxing and waning likely indicates their armored troops are on the move, avoiding getting boxed in by the zombie horde, rendering them immobile.
But soon, the sounds of gunfire became dense once again.
In the midst of tense and anxious waiting, between the intervals of exploding sounds, You Zixing first heard a rumbling noise, then saw a 59G tank driving straight along the factory area’s road.
The first tank, the second tank, the third tank... Following the three tanks were two armored cars.
You Zixing stood up. He switched on the IR light on his helmet and then frantically waved his hands.
The tank approached, made a turn, and charged straight towards You Zixing with a very heavy stench of blood.
You Zixing was stunned to find that the familiar tanks had changed color; they seemed as if they had been soaked in blood, and even had several broken arms stuck in the grills at the back of the tanks.
Like something emerging from Hell, an armored car opened its hatch, and Li Pengfei popped out from the top, then he yelled, "Where’s Nemesis? Dead!"
