Chapter 508: Chapter 501: A Sharp Tool
Gao Yuan followed Ram to the Arilan Moson Studio shooting range, and when they arrived, Rabbit was lying on the ground, with Jack sitting beside him, holding a small notebook, behind a spotting scope.
"The point of impact is slightly to the lower left, good density, preparing for the fifth shot."
Rabbit pulled the bolt, no, it was more of a cannon slide, followed by a crisp metallic clank, a shell casing ejected, after which Rabbit stuffed a cannon round into the chamber from beside him.
Both were wearing headsets, the industrial kind with built-in communicators that completely blocked out external noise. For them to talk, they had to communicate through the headsets.
After all, Rabbit was firing a cannon, its sound incredibly loud. Without protection, their ears would ring after just two shots, the kind that mattered during battle but certainly required ear protection during test firing and routine shooting practice to prevent any impact on hearing.
Rabbit took aim for a long time, then fired another round. A loud boom kicked up a cloud of dust in front of the cannon muzzle.
Jack continued to inspect through the spotting scope, and after a moment, he drew a small circle on the notebook in his hand, and then stood up, gesturing to Rabbit.
As he stood up and turned around, Jack saw Gao Yuan and the others; he waved at them and took off his headset.
"All done?"
"Yes, all done."
Rabbit was getting up from the ground when Li Jinfang kicked him in the butt and then sat down on Rabbit’s lower back, reaching out to yank off Rabbit’s headset.
"You damn Rabbit! How dare you snitch on me."
"Ouch, my back, it’s broken, get off, get off."
"Didn’t I tell you to keep quiet? How come my mom and dad know now!"
"I didn’t say anything, I just told my mom..."
Li Jinfang hit Rabbit hard on the head and said angrily, "How is that any different from telling my dad!"
Ram interjected from the side, "Alright, a little scolding will do, let him get up quickly, I’m waiting to test fire."
Rabbit turned his head and said, "This one is mine! Yours is all tuned up; I adjusted it for Jack."
Li Jinfang pulled Rabbit up, and Rabbit had no intention of retaliation; he went straight to Jack and asked eagerly, "How is it, how is it?"
Jack nodded and said, "The precision is very high, the spread is extremely small. At a distance of one thousand meters, the spread area is within ten centimeters, with three bullet holes overlapping. This precision is quite impressive."
Rabbit’s face was full of surprise, "Such high precision? That’s much higher than a gun."
Ram squatted on the ground, looking at the sniper cannon Rabbit had just fired, his face full of amazement, "It’s that precise?"
This sniper cannon, with just the barrel two meters long plus the stock and firing mechanism, had an overall length of two and a half meters—a truly massive size.
Jack said in a solemn tone, "This kind of small-caliber cannon with a long barrel and high initial velocity also maintains a high speed; having a higher precision than rifles is common."
"What about my cannon?"
"It’s inside, go get it yourself."
Ram turned and walked inside, and after a while, he came out holding a sleek sniper cannon.
The sniper cannon Rabbit was using for test firing was bare, just a basic cannon with no attachments, designed to fire rounds, equipped only with a scope for aiming.
But Ram was holding a sniper cannon accessory that was quite complete, it had a scope, and on the left side of the barrel, there was a set of mechanical sights, and a bipod was installed in the middle of the barrel.
Ram lay down on the ground at the spot where Rabbit had just fired, holding his cannon. He first took a glance through the scope, then he pulled the bolt and said, "Ammo."
Rabbit handed over a round, Ram loaded it, then took careful aim, and moments later he squeezed the trigger. With a boom, a piece of iron target in the distance was pierced through.
Ram stood up with a smile on his face, he flexed his right arm and said, "The recoil is strong, but bearable. The accuracy is good, very good, excellent."
Jack, with a calm expression, said, "It weighs a total of 37 kilograms. We can still reduce the weight, but if we do, the recoil would become unbearable. So, if you are satisfied with the current design, we can finalize it."
Ram thought for a moment, then he put the cannon up from the ground, attempting to lift it, but he simply couldn’t do it.
The sniper cannon was too long; because of its length, it would definitely be front-heavy. Ram could barely manage to bring the cannon to a horizontal position, but it was impossible for him to keep the barrel stable, which meant he couldn’t fire from a standing position.
"No good, I can’t lift it."
Jack waved his hand and said, "Forget about shooting standing up, it’s impossible."
Ram turned to Gao Yuan with a smile and said, "Come on, give it a try."
Calling Gao Yuan over meant he wanted him to test the cannon as well. Gao Yuan stepped forward, took the sniper cannon from Ram’s hands, and then he naturally lifted the cannon up.
Ram let out an envious sigh, then excitedly said, "Take a shot?"
To fire the cannon, Gao Yuan first had to load it, which meant opening the bolt, and at that moment he could only support the sniper cannon with one hand while operating the bolt with the other.
It didn’t matter that it was just one hand; Gao Yuan easily supported the sniper cannon with his left hand, and with his right hand, he took a round, inserted it, and then pushed the bolt forward.
In the scope, the crosshair kept swinging back and forth; Gao Yuan aimed for a long time, never managing to accurately center on the bulls-eye, but this wasn’t an issue with the sniper cannon, as he always felt the scope would wobble, whether using a gun or a cannon.
With a mix of aim and guesswork, Gao Yuan fired a round, and then his body swayed slightly, the kind without much sensation.
After a moment, Jack shouted, "Missed the target!"
"That’s amazing..."
After uttering a soft word of admiration, Ram said to Gao Yuan, "This cannon seems tailor-made for you. Try shooting from the prone position."
A distance of one thousand meters was indeed far; nobody could ensure they’d hit the target shooting standing. Consequently, Gao Yuan also lay down on the ground, and this time aiming was much easier for him.
Another round fired, and immediately, a specially made steel target gained a new hole.
If it were a sniper rifle, Gao Yuan sincerely doubted he could hit a target at a distance of one thousand meters, but with this cannon, it was very easy.
"Not bad at all, how thick is the steel target?"
"Thirty millimeters, set at a forty-five-degree angle. The discarding sabot armor-piercing round pierces through it effortlessly. If the target were standing upright, the sabot round could penetrate a fifty-millimeter thick steel plate."
Ram looked toward Gao Yuan and asked, "What do you think of the power?"
Gao Yuan thought for a moment and then said, "I think it should be able to penetrate an Armored Beast."
Touching his chin, Ram, with a conflicted expression, said, "Without practical verification, there’s always uncertainty. How about it, let’s do a field test! Let’s go to Malakal, find a living Armored Beast, and hit it with a round to see if it can kill an Armored Beast, what do you think?"
