Chapter 502: Chapter 495 Miracle
The exciting moment had arrived, yet inexplicably, there were more ladies present today than usual.
Almost all of Satan’s people were there, Gao Yuan had even specifically gone to call Lizhizi, as for Ashraf, he had soaked in the water for too long and, as expected, caught a cold.
Although this was a scientific expedition, or let’s say an adventure, the atmosphere felt more like a military operation. Aside from Adel and Xinghe who chattered incessantly along the way, everyone else was very serious.
Perhaps everyone was hoping for miracles here, so naturally, the tension in the atmosphere became palpable.
After leaving the makeshift town that sprung up out of the grassland, a drive of less than ten minutes took us to the gentle slope at the foot of a small hill. Continuing to drive up the hill until the car could go no further, then a ten-minute walk led us to a rather large cave entrance.
Gao Yuan had thought the cave entrance would be on the side of a mountain, but upon arrival, he found that the entrance was actually on flat ground, the descending kind.
A black man stood at the entrance; Ram approached and waved a hand, saying, "Is everyone ready?"
"Ready. We’ve been pumping air into the cave for over an hour now. I just went in to try it out, and there is no lack of oxygen inside."
There was a generator running on the ground, and judging by the many electric wires connected to it, there seemed to be quite a few electrical appliances inside.
Ram nodded, then gestured with his hand, "Let’s go in. Hedgehog, you and Leida stay at the entrance."
After giving the order, Ram was the first to descend into the cave.
"The first time I came here, there were wooden supports; it was deliberately buried and hidden by human hands, but the technique was very crude, very primitive."
Ram turned on his headlamp, looked around by turning his head, thinking of going down into the pit, and then in a not-so-large space, one could see the true entrance of the cave.
A large lamp in the cave was aimed at a dark and gloomy cave. Although the light was bright, shining into the dark cavern still gave off a dim and unfathomable feel.
Gao Yuan and Xinghe followed down, and Xinghe carefully examined the cave, even touching the walls with her hand, commenting, "These are traces of a volcanic eruption, lava tubes?"
Ram immediately replied, "Yes, lava tubes. Geologists have been here and said the whole hill is basalt, which was formed by the cooling of the magma from a volcanic eruption. Uh, the geologists originally thought there might be kimberlite here. We hoped to find kimberlite because the chances of finding diamonds are higher near kimberlite, but there wasn’t any. The whole hill is all basalt."
Xinghe didn’t speak or move, as if she was searching her mind for points of knowledge. After a moment, she nodded and said, "A kind of igneous rock, alright, I understand now."
Ram made a welcoming gesture, leading the way, and then said tenderly, "This cave is a lava tube. When the volcano erupted, the surrounding lava cooled first, and the melting magma flowed out from here, eventually forming this lava tube."
Gao Yuan looked around and then asked curiously, "How did you discover such a hidden place?"
Ram replied with great emotion, "It was fate, sigh, just fate. At that time, I was being chased and I fell into that pit outside by accident. Then I ran into this place. If it weren’t for that misstep, this place might still be undiscovered to this day."
Xinghe quickened her pace, so Ram also sped up.
Following the slightly curved lava tube all the way forward, they soon arrived at a large underground hall.
A vast space entirely made of black basalt, lit by four searchlights, yet it did not feel very bright, for the whole space was dark, giving a very oppressive feeling.
People with claustrophobia would have already felt very uncomfortable by this time, but when Xinghe saw the back of the statue, she immediately started running and then stood in front of the statue that faced a huge opening on the ground.
Xinghe was one meter eighty-seven tall, while the statue was about two meters twenty in height. Its upper body and head were discernibly humanoid in shape, but its lower half was neither round nor square, and it was unclear whether it represented the lower body of a person or a pedestal.
Standing there, Xinghe gazed at the statue, while Gao Yuan looked at the overly abstract statue before turning his head to study the colossal opening only a few meters away from the statue.
On the hall’s flat ground there was a massive opening that looked even more profound and shadowy against the overall blackness of the area. The entire opening was encircled with caution tape, marking its position; otherwise, it was indeed possible that someone might accidentally fall in without noticing.
At the edge of the opening, a scaffold had been erected, with steel cables and a hoist basket attached. If one wanted to descend into the vertical cave, this hoist basket would be used.
The statue was extremely ancient, essentially presenting the kind of abstract form that primitive people would represent in murals or rock paintings. The entire statue seemed to be made of clay, and even on the back, it was possible to see a few bullet holes.
"Although its shape is very abstract, this is the image of the Celestials early spacesuit," Xinghe finally said. She gazed at the statue and then leaned forward slightly, uttering a string of words in a language no one could understand to the statue, before straightening her posture again and staring at the statue.
Gao Yuan couldn’t help but ask, "What are you saying?"
"Paying respects to the great pioneers of exploration."
After saying this, Xinghe turned around to look toward the opening faced by the statue, a vertical shaft that seemed so bottomless it was impossible to tell its depth.
"Is the statue’s gaze fixed on this opening?"
The eyes of the statue now only had three pits because the diamonds that had served as the eyes were pried out by Ram.
With a hint of embarrassment, Ram said, "Ah, I really didn’t notice at the time, but I guess so..."
Two large lamps shone light down into the opening. Xinghe walked up to the scaffold and looked down, her hand on the structure for support. In the illumination of the light, she could already see the bottom. However, as the vertical shaft was so deep and entirely composed of black basalt, looking down all one could see was darkness.
Xinghe watched for a long time before turning her head back and saying, "I don’t remember there being similar terrain elsewhere on Earth. This vertical shaft is too perfect, so perfect that it seems as if it were artificial. It’s very deep, completely vertical; it’s nearly impossible for a volcanic eruption to naturally create such an opening, right?"
Scratching his head, Ram said, "Um, experts also find it incredible, they want to conduct long-term research here, but are you kidding me? This was the place I desperately kept secret, how could I possibly allow people to research it..."
While Ram was still speaking, Adel stated with conviction, "Yes, it’s impossible for it to have formed naturally."
Then Ram understood, Xinghe was not asking him, but Adel.
Xinghe nodded and said, "Let’s go down and take a look."
At that moment, Adel spoke up anxiously, "I have a question, can your technology produce such a hole?"
Xinghe paused for a moment, then shook her head and said, "Our current spaceships can’t, and if it was the spaceships from before... likewise can’t. So, this shaft puzzles me, I am very puzzled right now."
