Chapter 497: Chapter 490 A Very Important Person

As they drove back, Ram suddenly said, "Xiao Yuan, I’ll take you to meet a few people later. I think it’s necessary for you to meet them."

"Hm? Sure."

Letting out a sigh, Ram spoke softly, "I thought this would be a sanctuary, but even here there’s no peace. No matter what happens in the future, I hope..."

He didn’t finish his sentence and turned to look at Gao Yuan. Then, very seriously, he said, "At the least, you are the captain of Spark Squad. At most, you are the captain of the Shenzhou Expeditionary Army. So now, you’re the highest-ranking person from Shenzhou here. If I’m gone one day and Satan is gone too, can you take my place and protect those I must protect?"

Gao Yuan was somewhat surprised. After a moment of thought, he asked, "What do you mean exactly?"

"We’re just mercenaries. We’ve gathered a lot of people now, and we’re waging war against the Sanitation Workers and will eventually battle the aliens. But our strength is ultimately limited. Many years as cannon fodder have taught me one thing: in the end, it’s the nation that plays the decisive role. Our own power is too limited. I don’t know what the future holds, but I want your promise—if the side you represent, Shenzhou, ultimately wins, I hope you’ll see that my people are taken care of properly."

Gao Yuan thought seriously, and after having really considered it, he said gravely, "I don’t know what the future will be like, but I can promise to do my utmost!"

Ram smiled and said, "We both do our utmost. Conversely, if you die in battle, I promise that as long as I live another day, I’ll ensure your people are safe for a day."

Though the words might seem a bit ominous, Gao Yuan suddenly felt much more at peace for some reason.

"It’s a promise."

"It’s a promise."

Ram smiled again and continued, "Let me take you to meet someone first. He’s my friend and also my... guide. He helped me a lot in escaping the fate of being cannon fodder. We’re here."

Ram parked the car in front of a house. After he got out, someone quickly opened the front door and stood on the porch, watching Ram.

The person inside must have been keeping a close watch on what was happening outside; otherwise, he wouldn’t have opened the door so promptly.

In his forties and looking very stern, Gao Yang spread his arms wide and called out cheerfully, "Hey, Butt Face, how’s it going?"

"Don’t call me Butt Face, asshole!"

"Alright, Butt Face."

The two traded insults and hugged each other briefly. Then Ram turned back to Gao Yuan and Xinghe, who had just gotten out of the car, and said, "Come over, let me introduce you. This is Simon. Simon, this is Gao Yuan, and she’s Xinghe."

Simon’s face seemed to be smiling on one side, but the other side was expressionless. He nodded to Gao Yuan and Xinghe, then stepped aside from the door and said, "Please come in. Morgan’s in good spirits right now."

Ram led Gao Yuan and Xinghe inside. The house was decorated like a typical American family home, full of life and showing no signs of the post-apocalyptic setting outside.

Gao Yuan led the way, familiar with the place. They passed through the living room, down a corridor, and after opening another door, they found a courtyard with a large tree. Beneath its shade was a wheelchair, next to which was a long dining table and several chairs.

An old man with white hair sat in the wheelchair, a blanket over his legs, and a young man sat on a chair beside him. They weren’t talking. At the sound of Ram’s footsteps, the elder in the wheelchair slightly turned his head, and a smile immediately appeared on his gaunt face.

"Gao, you’ve arrived."

Ram hastened forward to the elder, bent down, and embraced him, saying, "Morgan, you look very well."

Ram stood up, then embraced a younger man standing next to them before turning with a smile and saying, "Bob, I’ve brought some good news."

Morgan was an old man, and clearly a sick one, something Gao Yuan could easily discern.

Simon stood by Morgan’s side, but Morgan struggled to lift his hand, waving at Gao Yuan and Xinghe before smiling and saying, "Your friend, Gao?"

"Oh, yes, from Shenzhou. Let me introduce them to you. This is Gao Yuan, the leader of the Shenzhou Expeditionary Army, and this is Xinghe, she’s an Alien."

Ram outright revealed Gao Yuan and Xinghe’s identities, and, true to form, Morgan’s face lit up with amazement, exclaiming, "Wow, an alien, this is really... really..."

Morgan shrugged, chuckling, "I don’t even know what to say, but since the aliens have already invaded, meeting one doesn’t seem too surprising. But to meet an alien at the last moment of my life, um, I’m very pleased, really pleased. Please sit, sit down."

Gao Yuan and Xinghe hadn’t sat down yet, but Ram leaned in close to Morgan once more and whispered, "Do you know, the Ark of the Covenant the Sanitation Worker holds can cure your cancer, no problem at all, and now we’ve located where the Ark is. That’s the good news I’ve brought, Morgan; you must hold on, I’ll get the Ark for you very soon!"

Simon and Bob coloured at this, then Bob called out loudly, "Really?"

Ram’s face set in determination as he replied, "Of course it’s true, I wouldn’t joke about something like this."

Without thinking, Simon began wringing his hands, and then he said gravely, "When do we move?"

Morgan raised a hand with a smile, "It’s always good to have hope. I’ll try to live a little longer. How’s the war going? You’re here, so that means we’ve won, right?"

Ram sighed, "Yes, we’ve won. The fight isn’t over yet, but the situation is under control. I came back to tell you the good news and to let you meet an alien. I knew you would be pleased."

Morgan nodded with a smile, then fell silent. After a while, he suddenly said, "Gao, I hope you understand something, nobody wants to die, I don’t want to die, but taking the Ark isn’t something that can be done lightly, you understand me, right?"

"I understand; I won’t act rashly."

Morgan let out a breath, "I’m close to death, and I don’t have much time left. I’m aware of that, but if you take unnecessary risks trying to save me, I’d be very disappointed. Whatever decisions you make shouldn’t be too clouded by personal feelings. You’re responsible for many people. If you die, many things will completely spiral out of control, your family, my family, the families of many of us will lose their support. Gao, you must be cautious."

Ram smiled, replying, "I understand, I really do. Don’t worry."

Morgan sighed, then stretched out his hand, and Ram quickly extended his hand for Morgan to grasp. Then Morgan said meaningfully, "I can’t be at ease because I know what kind of person you are. Promise me one thing, let Number Thirteen decide when to take the Ark. Only he can be unaffected by you and make a clear-headed independent decision. That’s my only request. Can you promise me that?"

"That guy, Number Thirteen, is a freak..."

After mumbling hesitantly and looking into Morgan’s eyes, Ram finally said, "Alright, I promise you. I’ll let Number Thirteen decide when to take the Ark. I won’t let my personal feelings interfere with this mission."
