Chapter 493: Chapter 486 Satan Town

It wasn’t a short trip from headquarters back to the base, and Gao Yuan wasn’t the only one who was impatient on the way.

The vehicle returning to the base carried twelve cannon barrels, all of which had been taken from captured or destroyed AMX-30 tanks, including one complete automatic cannon, eleven separate barrels, and about six hundred armor-piercing discarding sabot rounds.

Had they not been waiting for these barrels, Gao Yuan and his team would have arrived much earlier.

Non-combatants had already returned to Satan’s base ahead of them, and the injured had been sent back earlier as well.

Departing in the evening, they arrived at Satan’s headquarters by the next morning.

Gao Yuan had always been curious about Satan’s base, but it wasn’t until he actually saw it that he realized it was quite different from what he had imagined.

This place was not a city at all, but rather like a large expanse of scattered houses, essentially a huge rural area.

Rows of brick houses served as barracks for soldiers, and there were also separately built wooden houses, nestled among patches of woodland.

On the sparse-tree grassland, one could even see a tall factory building where damaged tanks were being repaired.

One might say it was primitive, as the houses stood on the untouched grassland without any proper roads around them.

But one could also call this place a miracle, for to have built such a large base within the short one or two years before the apocalypse was nothing short of miraculous.

"This is the factory area, the repair zone. We basically can’t produce complex machinery, but repairs are feasible."

"Over there is the barracks. There are no entertainment facilities in the barracks. We have four large barracks like this one, and now they are all empty. Our rearguard is very vulnerable now, haha."

Gao Yuan and Gao Yang were in the same vehicle. Since they had begun to see the buildings, Gao Yang had started to introduce them to him with great interest.

"Have we arrived at the base?"

"Yes, but this is just the outskirts. The real core area is still ten or so kilometers away. There’s plenty of space here, plus we have to defend against attacks from the Sanitation Worker and guard against viruses deployed by the Aliens, so we can’t have the personnel too concentrated."

Finally, Gao Yuan could see a large cluster of houses from afar.

There were no particularly tall buildings; they were all bungalows and quite scattered, with wire fences in between them.

"Up ahead is our base, built to the standard of an American town. Most of it was constructed using local building materials. Initially, the plan was to use wooden houses since there’s no shortage of wood here. But the local wood is different from the construction materials used in North America. We encountered some trouble during construction. The wood was too fresh, and after the houses were built, they shrank and deformed. It was quite problematic..."

Gao Yang appeared quite helpless as he spread his hands and said, "In the end, we had no choice but to import wood. Sigh, we’re surrounded by forests and still had to import pine to build houses. I even hired an American designer and planner to make this place look like a standard American Town. Well, now except for the lack of skyscrapers, it basically is a city..."

Gao Yang’s focus was oddly curious. Gao Yuan chuckled and then asked, "Why use barbed wire to fence the houses into sections?"

"Sigh, all of us were vaccinated, and the virus concentration here isn’t high, but people still get infected. To prevent a large-scale outbreak, we’ve divided houses by area and function. This minimizes the secondary harm caused by zombies. However, everyone said it felt like living in a prison, so now we’re gradually taking the barbed wire down. But we can’t remove it from critical spots, like hospitals, cinemas, and other places where crowds gather. It’s only the residential areas that are being completely cleared."

This town seemed deserted because the majority of the residents were military personnel, who were now all at the front, fighting in the war.

The convoy drove straight into the town without encountering any sentries, which puzzled Gao Yuan greatly. Curiously, he asked, "Aren’t there any guard troops? No sentries at all?"

"Of course, there are, but you just can’t see them. We are trying our best to make this look like a normal town or city, not a heavily guarded position. You know, for a bunch of soldiers who are very confused about the future, it’s crucial to create a relaxed atmosphere. If they live in a highly oppressive environment all the time, I really don’t know when these soldiers might revolt."

After saying that, Gao Yang resignedly said, "You have to understand that my troops are multi-national, and maintaining their cohesion, preventing defection to the enemy, and internal strife is much harder than combat."

"There’s a serious gender imbalance here, isn’t there?"

Gao Yang clapped his hands and said with a wry smile, "You’ve hit the nail on the head. The gender ratio here is seriously skewed, about twenty to one. This issue has to be resolved; otherwise, sooner or later, it’ll cause big problems. This is what’s been making me feel so guilty."

"Why do you feel guilty?"

Gao Yang was taken aback for a moment, then he waved his hand and said, "Uh, we’re almost there. Let’s get the gun barrels delivered and then talk."

The convoy almost crossed the entire town, which was full of houses in the American style, beautifully arranged, and even the lawns were well kept and orderly, with hardened roads.

There was even a coffee shop on the street corner, a bakery, various stores—in a quick glance, this place didn’t seem much different from a corner of an American city.

"There are shops? I’m curious if they actually have things for sale?"

Gao Yuan hadn’t seen a properly operating convenience store in such a long time, so he was truly excited and genuinely curious. Gao Yang, however, was extremely proud as he said, "Of course, they have everything, but it’s very, very expensive. We don’t use money; we use... contribution points, or our internal currency. Basically, no one can afford much because supplies are far too precious. A squad of soldiers on duty for a week can barely pool together enough to buy a pack of cigarettes. But even just to look around is nice. When you see a shop stocked with goods, it just feels different, right?"

Gao Yuan, looking at the convenience store, sincerely said, "Exactly, that’s the feeling. I miss going into convenience stores to buy things so much, I really miss it... What if I want to buy something?"

Gao Yang regretfully shrugged and said, "The same, you buy with contribution points. That’s the iron rule I set. Even as the boss, I must follow it, but you have to understand that in this environment, if you break the rules, it’s like destroying the cohesion we’ve struggled to maintain, so I will never break this rule."

Just then, Gao Yuan saw a large single-storey building with a sign outside depicting a gun.

The vehicle stopped, and Gao Yang smiled, "We’ve arrived, Arilan Moson Studio, the best gunsmith workshop in the world."
