The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse -
Chapter 487 - 480 Panic
Chapter 487: Chapter 480 Panic
There was a large patch of reeds and sedge by the riverbank, which could offer good camouflage and concealment. But as the group made it to the river’s edge, Gao Yuan distinctly saw several Nile crocodiles with only their heads above the water’s surface.
Gao Yuan was somewhat taken aback. To rashly enter the water now would be like delivering themselves as a meal to the crocodiles.
As the presence of people neared the shoreline, a crocodile on the bank immediately turned its head and sluggishly made its way back to the water; then, with a flick of its tail, it began to swim toward deeper parts.
At that moment, Gao Yang suddenly raised his gun, and with several sharp bangs, fired multiple shots. Any crocodile that was floating and exposing its head on the surface of the water, attempting to return to the water from the shore, had its head blown open.
"Quick, get in the water."
Animal conservation? That concept seemed foreign to Gao Yang.
At the sound of gunfire, the nearby crocodiles immediately departed, diving into the water or quickly entering it from the shore. The crocodiles that Gao Yuan and his team could and couldn’t see vanished in the shortest span of time.
Although crocodiles are not noted for their intelligence, if they still didn’t know to fear the sound of gunfire by now, they would have gone extinct long ago.
Gao Yuan placed the iron watermelon on the ground, reasoning that the monsters wouldn’t know to destroy it, much less steal it.
Before entering the water, Gao Yuan also pulled out two dry reeds, snapping them briskly into pieces. The hollow reeds could serve as breathing tubes.
"If a monster comes near, retract your head into the water and use the reed to breathe."
After saying this, Gao Yuan realized that Ashraf was hesitating by the river, clutching his rifle and looking at the calm river water with an expression of dilemma.
"Come on down."
Upon seeing Gao Yuan waving at him, Ashraf hesitated for a moment before tentatively placing one foot in the water.
Just as if he had touched boiling water, Ashraf quickly withdrew his foot, then shook his head and dove into the reeds, hugging his rifle.
"Ol’Gun, Ol’Gun! Come down. You might be discovered on the shore and attract monsters."
The language barrier was a real nuisance; Ashraf knew Gao Yuan was calling out to him, but the problem was, Gao Yuan couldn’t explain that monsters identified humans through infrared vision.
Ashraf’s fear of the water was truly unexpected for Gao Yuan.
It was challenging to find a river in Afghanistan. Ashraf probably never knew what swimming felt like, and given the encounter with those crocodiles, he was surely overwhelmed with fear of the vast river before him.
Gao Yuan was helpless; he had no choice but to wade back to shore, and when he found Ashraf in the reeds, he saw Ashraf huddled up like a quail.
To forcibly take a man who feared water and plunge him into the river was quite cruel, but Gao Yuan still grabbed Ashraf regardless of his struggles, and forcefully carried him into the water.
Ashraf wasn’t a child, so he didn’t struggle, but Gao Yuan could feel Ashraf’s entire body stiffen.
Carrying a person in the water made it difficult to move, so Gao Yuan set him down in waist-deep water, which was deep enough to keep Ashraf from moving.
Having no other choice, Gao Yuan had to pull Ashraf’s arm and slowly move him to a slightly deeper spot.
Ashraf looked rather pitiful standing in chest-deep water, already feeling unable to control his own body, so he had to grab Gao Yuan’s arm, steadying himself in the water like a helpless child.
"People from the desert cherish water greatly and actually love it a lot, including swimming, but there are also many who are deeply terrified of great rivers. Yeah, it’s quite normal,"
Gao Yang, watching from the side, said with a sense of emotion and continued, "When we need to dive under later, keep an eye on him. People who can’t swim can panic severely when water gets into their nose."
Just then, Li Jinfang said in a low voice, "Stop chatting, the monsters are coming."
The monsters had not reached the water yet, but they could hear the gunfire and explosions within Malakal city district rapidly diminishing.
We have to admit, the biological weapon used by the Serpent People is highly efficient.
A group of people submerged in water didn’t attract the attention of the monster, and the Armored Beast with its hind leg broken by Gao Yuan, lying on the ground, was nowhere to be seen.
Time ticked away, and even though the sun above was scorching, the water remained cool. Having been soaked continuously, Ashraf finally couldn’t help trembling and started to feel cold.
"Hold on, endure it, don’t move."
Gao Yang whispered a couple of sentences, then he muttered softly, "As long as the monster doesn’t come, then everything is negotiable. It’s not scary to be a bit cold; it’ll soon pass once we get to land."
Rabbit muttered softly, "Just afraid... "
"Shut up."
"You don’t speak!"
"Rabbit, can’t you keep quiet, don’t you have any sense?"
Just when Rabbit said something, he immediately drew at least seven or eight scoldings from Satan’s bunch, compelling Rabbit to smile awkwardly and ultimately stopped talking.
Gao Yang kept repeating to himself, "Don’t come over, don’t come over, please don’t come over..."
The sun was already high in the sky, and it was now noon. Within the entire Malakal City, no sound could be heard.
As Malakal, the important industrial base, the logistics center for Sanitation Workers, was utterly destroyed.
After soaking in water for three hours, everyone had begun to shiver. Swimming might have been better, but staying motionless in water, they were all losing heat, making even those with good physical conditions feel cold.
"This is really uncomfortable, Xiao Yuan. Can we get onshore now?"
Gao Yang, shivering, posed the question, and Gao Yuan considered it for a moment before murmuring softly, "We can, but we mustn’t get caught, especially no shooting. I think it’s still better to wait until the Serpent People’s airship leaves; after completely destroying this city, the Serpent People won’t stick around."
"Alright then, let’s endure a bit longer."
Rabbit suddenly said, "The Serpent People will leave soon; I have a feeling."
Then something miraculous happened. Just as Rabbit’s words fell, the first airship that had arrived whooshed and disappeared into the clouds, followed by the other two ships leaving one after another.
There were no surprises, just the extreme cold, but they had finally avoided the most difficult and dangerous time.
Sometimes, a crisis is resolved in an incomprehensible way.
"We can go up now, right?"
Gao Yuan tugged at Ashraf, who was almost unable to stand and shaking like a sieve, and then they slowly made their way to shore.
About a dozen people, soaking wet, made it back to land, then Gao Yang, trembling, said, "Why is it so cold? Let’s sunbathe for a while, have some food, and then move. I can’t even hold my gun steady now."
Gao Yang managed to speak despite his lack of strength, but Ashraf’s lips had turned purple. Holding his rifle and shivering uncontrollably, he just sat down on the ground, trembling all over.
At that moment, Rabbit suddenly said with a surprised look, "Hey, that... "
"You shut up!"
After Gao Yang rebuked him, he turned his head to follow the direction Rabbit was pointing and immediately felt dismay, saying, "Damn, an Armored Beast! Hey, isn’t that the one with the broken leg from before? How can it walk?"
