Chapter 469: Chapter 462: Eccentric
As soon as night fell, Gao Yang led his team out, unable to wait any longer.
From Gao Yuan’s perspective, he couldn’t understand why Gao Yang would personally lead his old squad in such a dangerous operation.
From any angle, Gao Yang was the type to command from behind the scenes, even if he wasn’t adept at directing large military operations—but that didn’t mean he had to fight on the front lines himself.
As someone who was extremely wealthy, with people and guns at his command, from any standpoint, he resembled a great warlord. Just because he was impressive, and had been fierce in the past, was there really a need for him to enter the battlefield himself?
Everyone admitted that Satan was formidable, but even Satan was simply part of a Mercenary Corps, while within the Solar System Company there were America’s SEALs, Delta Force, Russia’s Signal Flag, Alpha, England’s SAS, SBS, France’s Foreign Legion, and the retired elite from Shenzhou’s top special forces.
The Solar System Company had gathered the most elite special forces from the United Nations, some of which even joined as complete units.
Gao Yang could have simply deployed any one of those units, casually picked from the elite at his disposal—yet he insisted on taking part in combat himself.
It was like the situation where a real estate tycoon, a chairman worth billions, upon inspecting a construction site, tells the bricklayer to put down his bricks and stop moving; claiming they aren’t doing it right and decides to do the work himself.
In Gao Yuan’s eyes, that was precisely what Gao Yang was doing—he was like the real estate boss who personally handled the bricks.
But as much as Gao Yuan thought so, he couldn’t say it out loud. Why? Because he was a guest from afar, and since everyone here had to listen to Gao Yang, naturally, he had to do the same.
So Gao Yuan now thought that the legendary God of Guns, Ram, might indeed be incredible. But he and all his people, those who became excited at the thought of war, who seemed impatient for a fight, were nothing more than warmongers; that was their only reason.
As for the claims that no one but Satan could accomplish this mission, Gao Yuan didn’t believe it at all.
At the very least, from what he observed during the march, Satan seemed no more than ordinary.
Move when it was time to move, stop when it was time to stop, scout ahead to confirm there was no threat before proceeding—it’s how any special forces unit in the world would progress, not to mention, even standard military units followed the same practice.
Satan was divided into two parts, with the assault team at the forefront and the support team behind. The so-called technical team, which included Gao Yuan, was at the rear, although close to the support team.
They were currently proceeding in vehicles, deviating slightly from the previous route of the balloon release, but not by much. The journey was calm, with no patrols or enemy sentries encountered—it was merely driving at a steady pace across the Sparse-Tree Grassland.
Of all the people present, Wang Buliuxing was the only one who had never participated in such an operation. He was somewhat nervous, but in the complete absence of lights during the trip, Gao Yuan could only judge by his slightly heavy breathing that Wang Buliuxing was very tense.
"Feeling nervous?"
"Ah? No, uh, a little."
Gao Yuan just wanted to calm Wang Buliuxing’s nerves, but Hedgehog, the driver, whispered, "No talking, keep quiet."
Xinghe whispered, "He’s telling you to keep quiet."
Thus, Gao Yuan had no choice but to close his mouth again.
The vehicle was moving at a decent speed of nearly forty kilometers per hour without headlights, using only night vision gear—a practice Gao Yuan had long become accustomed to. Moving along was one thing, but why couldn’t they even speak?
The car drove quietly until Hedgehog abruptly hit the brakes, then said in an urgent voice, "Enemy ahead, on guard!"
"Enemy alert,"
The technical team was indeed a technical team, for out of the five members, two could only speak one language, and they were different ones at that. Xinghe would find that one translation was not enough.
Gao Yuan patted Ashraf on the arm without a word, but he did scan his surroundings, yet found nothing at all.
In nighttime operations, night vision goggles were a must. Gao Yang could see clearly all around him, but he spotted no signs of the enemy.
Hedgehog didn’t speak, either. He turned off the engine, and then it was just silent waiting. After about a full ten minutes, Gao Yuan saw someone stand up and wave their arms about 200 meters ahead of the vehicle.
At short distances, top-tier night vision devices offered a view almost indistinguishable from daytime visibility.
Hedgehog said in a low voice, "Alert’s over, continue moving."
After restarting the car, Hedgehog began following the lead vehicle’s pace. At this point, Gao Yuan couldn’t help but ask, "Where’s the enemy? How did we detect them?"
"Don’t know, the drone found them. We just need to avoid them," Hedgehog replied. Of course, this Q&A required Xinghe’s translation.
Hedgehog didn’t know where the enemy was, or how many there were either, since they kept radio silence throughout, and he couldn’t see the images the drone was sending back, nor was he informed of the enemy’s location.
About another half an hour of driving later, Hedgehog stopped the car once again. After scrutinizing the surroundings for a moment, he said softly, "We’ve arrived, get out, we’ll proceed on foot."
Gao Yuan tapped Ashraf on the arm, signaling that it was time to get out.
Ashraf didn’t have night vision goggles, because it was impossible for him to observe the world through them while riding in a moving car—he would get sick, and might even vomit.
But Gao Yuan never understood why Ashraf got nauseous, because looking through night vision goggles is a completely different matter from watching a screen with images while in a car.
"Nemesis, take the hydrogen cylinder, Xinghe, grab the balloon. We’re moving with the support team, and make it quick,"
As he spoke, Hedgehog’s tone was somewhat dubious, since Gao Yuan was wearing two layers of bulletproof vests, carrying forty hand grenades, but that wasn’t the key point. The crucial fact was that Gao Yuan also carried his weapon, which didn’t take up any space in his backpack, because Gao Yuan’s backpack was packed with liquid energy bars.
In Hedgehog’s view, it was impressive enough that Gao Yuan could still keep moving with all that gear on him.
But when Gao Yuan picked up the cylinder effortlessly and then quickly started moving at the fastest speed among the group, Hedgehog believed his boss’s statement that Nemesis had a strength that was almost inhuman.
The assault team was far ahead, at least five hundred meters away from Gao Yuan and his group; why they maintained such a distance was unclear, but when Gao Yuan followed the support team, he knew that Satan’s assault and support were completely disconnected.
From this point, Satan’s operation began to reveal its quirkiness—not a miracle, but quirkiness—for in Gao Yuan’s view, keeping the support and assault teams 500 meters apart seemed too far a distance.
Moreover, within the support team, Gao Yuan felt that Satan was really not up to the word "strongest," because no other special forces team was that distinctive. Tall ones were tall, short ones short, fat ones fat, thin ones thin, and most absurdly, Satan’s team even included disabled persons.
As far as Gao Yuan could remember, none of Shenzhou’s special forces ever had members of such build, let alone the disabled.
