Chapter 444: Chapter 437: Each Fight Their Own Fight
With a knife in one hand and a Steel Mace in the other, reaching for a hand grenade wasn’t convenient.
Gao Yuan could choose to discard one of his weapons, freeing one hand, but after a brief survey of his surroundings, he wondered why he had to confront this armored vehicle at all?
This was a BMP-1, sporting only a 73mm low-pressure smoothbore gun and a fixed machine gun. None of the four armored vehicles featured machine guns that could be operated by a gunner sticking out of the top, meaning the armored vehicle would need to readjust its direction to fire at him.
Using the smoothbore gun to target Gao Yuan might be more convenient, but with its slow firing rate and the absence of an advanced fire control system, hitting Gao Yuan was not going to be easy.
So, Gao Yuan realized there was no need to tangle with the armored vehicle he was standing on; he had already drawn it away from the enemy’s attack formation, while the enemy’s tanks and infantry-laden trucks continued along their predetermined route.
Gao Yuan leaped off the armored vehicle, accessing it from the side, and sprinted toward the enemy’s trucks.
Carrying flags on his back, it would be impossible not to attract attention.
The soldiers on the trucks saw clearly as Gao Yuan suddenly abandoned the armored vehicle, then ran toward them from the side. They saw him so clearly, the soldiers began shouting loudly, attempting to stop him or take him down with their weapons.
In theory, he was an obvious and large target, with twenty to thirty people on one truck and at least a dozen on others, and only three trucks had a direct line of sight to fire at Gao Yuan. However, shooting wasn’t as easy as it seemed.
The greatest difficulty was that Gao Yuan was much too fast, to begin with, and moreover, his enemies were located on rapidly moving trucks.
Shooting at another swiftly moving target from a moving truck, using rifles or machine guns, was very difficult.
The biggest problem for these infantrymen was that they were prepared to disembark and fight; the trucks were just a means of transport, not fighting platforms, so they didn’t have fixed machine guns mounted on them.
Furthermore, from the point where Gao Yuan started his attack to the nearest truck was a mere hundred meters.
By the time the enemies on the truck noticed Gao Yuan changing direction, decided to fire, and then had four or five of them on one side of the truck with rifles trying to aim at him, Gao Yuan had already leaped into the back of the truck.
Crammed in a small truck bed, hiding was impossible, and there was nowhere to dodge; raising their guns to fire at Gao Yuan, who was within arm’s reach, they were much too slow in both reaction time and speed.
With a swing of his left and a whirl of his right, Gao Yuan effortlessly caused a bloodbath.
More exaggerated than anything in a movie, in less than a second, Gao Yuan had carried out a grisly slaughter on the truck, then jumped down, sprinted a few steps, and immediately leapt onto an adjacent truck twenty meters away.
Sometimes, speed was everything.
When Gao Yuan charged into the truck bed, thoroughly mixing with the enemy and then going on a rampage with his cold weapons, his opponents faced a difficult choice.
To shoot, or not to shoot?
In just a few square meters of cramped space, to shoot meant inevitably injuring comrades with friendly fire; to not shoot meant waiting to be cleaved and smashed one by one by Gao Yuan.
In the urgency of the situation, people couldn’t afford to worry too much. In fact, even at the risk of injuring their own teammates, some still fired at Gao Yuan.
A soldier had started firing at Gao Yuan before he could even aim properly. Since he didn’t have a chance to take aim afterward, the bullet swept across and first hit a teammate before it was about to strike Gao Yuan. At that moment, Steel Mace came sweeping across, smashing the rifle, arm, and then chest, all twisted and crushed into a pulp.
At times like this, was there any need to talk about finesse? Just swing and smash with all your might. Under the force, everything the Steel Mace touched was smashed into smithereens.
If you fired a gun, you were sure to hit a comrade, but if you didn’t shoot, then you just had to watch Gao Yuan wreak havoc. In a panic, the people sharing a vehicle with Gao Yuan opened fire. Meanwhile, the enemies in the truck beside them hesitated over whether or not to shoot.
But they didn’t hesitate for long.
The two vehicles were barely twenty meters apart. What was happening on the other vehicle was crystal clear to see; seeing all their comrades dead, what was there to hesitate about?
"Fire! Fire!"
A commander bellowed and fired the first shot; the men beside him also opened fire. By that time, Gao Yuan had finished his job. With a push off his right foot, he executed a beautiful Harrier flip, jumping down from the truck.
It seemed like he had been hit by a bullet, but even Gao Yuan couldn’t be sure. His double-layered bulletproof vest wasn’t in vain. As long as the bullet didn’t hit his head or limbs directly and if it wasn’t a large caliber, he might not notice it amidst the intense battle.
In a flash, once the fight broke out, the enemy became hard to take on, but while they were on the vehicle, it felt as though they were being crushed like canned meat by Gao Yuan, leaving both vehicles’ crews annihilated.
Gao Yuan followed the vehicle for a few steps, then suddenly accelerated. To the disbelief of the driver, Gao Yuan went around the front of the vehicle to its right side, slightly behind, facing the truck that had just fired at him.
The two flags flapped loudly, waving in the wind.
Turning around, Gao Yuan faced the third truck head-on and leaped, a simple acceleration and turn, enough to make the infantry who could shoot at him lose his trace.
Seeing Gao Yuan charging toward them and leaping up, the driver instinctively slammed on the brakes. But his abrupt stop didn’t prevent Gao Yuan; it only caused the already chaotic passengers in the bed of the truck to tumble forward en masse.
So, when Gao Yuan landed in the bed of the truck, what he saw was a scene of everyone scattered and fallen over each other.
What’s known as a fluke hit, toppled enemies can be trickier to deal with than those standing.
Gao Yuan had to act fast, and each of the enemies next to him served as his cover, his meat shield. But after he jumped into a bed of people who had all fallen down, those downed individuals, even though only three could immediately raise their guns at him, still presented Gao Yuan with an unprecedented threat.
The people in the truck were crammed together, some lying down, some sitting, and some gripping the railings without falling but losing their balance. The enemy might be in disarray and clumped together, but it wasn’t convenient for Gao Yuan to act quickly to take them all down.
So Gao Yuan immediately jumped down.
To come up when he wanted, to jump down when he chose—it was nothing to Gao Yuan.
After a brief moment of panic and confusion, the clustered enemies finally reacted. A commander roared into the radio, "Stop him! That monster is attacking us on the truck!"
