Chapter 440: Chapter 433 Forbidden
Commander?
What a joke, Gao Yuan never considered himself a commander and never dared to think that way.
He had never attended a military academy, had never received complete military training, and didn’t even understand squad tactics. To think of being a commander with that kind of background was absurd.
The role that suited Gao Yuan best was that of an extremely capable assault trooper.
In ancient times, Gao Yuan would have been a fierce general, a vanguard, the kind that, upon the chief commander’s order to charge, would utterly destroy the enemy. But to make him a marshal commanding thousands of troops would be harmful.
Gao Yuan wasn’t stupid, nor was he foolish. He was just an ordinary office worker who, because of his experiences, found himself inexplicably in the position of a squad leader, nothing more. If he suddenly became adept at warfare, that would be unrealistic.
Unfortunately, Gao Yuan could never find a battlefield that truly suited his talents nor comrades with whom he could mutually coordinate.
No matter how impressive Zhao Qiang and Li Yang were, regardless of how formidable Panxin and Li Jingang were, they and Gao Yuan were not from the same system, or even the same type.
Thus, Gao Yuan always felt out of place in battle, feeling disconnected from his surroundings, and out of sync with the cooperation of his comrades—a misfit in every sense.
Klaus’s words made Gao Yuan smile wryly because what Klaus implied was that Gao Yuan was hardly considered a commander at all.
But what could be done? There was no solution, no option available.
Now that the tank battle had temporarily subsided and the battlefield had returned to calm, what was the next move? Seize this rare opportunity to quickly withdraw?
Or what else should be done?
Out of habit, Gao Yuan glanced toward Li Jingang only to find he had already fainted, while Yu Shunzhou was receiving treatment and Cao Zhenjiang would be next. As for Green Hat, the least injured of them, his turn would still be a wait.
"Is it possible to evacuate those who have already undergone surgery first?"
Gao Yuan directed the question to Klaus, who looked at the wounded, hesitated for a moment, and said, "Where would we send them? If there’s no rear hospital, where would they go? Should we separate the medics from the wounded? That’s not feasible. We can only wait for a real medical team to arrive, or we could transport the wounded to a field hospital in the Solar System or even a rear hospital. Otherwise, there’s nothing we can do."
Although reinforcements had arrived, the wounded could still not receive proper medical care, which made Gao Yuan feel helpless.
Klaus sighed and then, waving his hand at Gao Yuan, who looked worried, he said, "You don’t have to worry too much right now. I think the situation should definitely be stable. Even if the enemy sends more troops, the Solar System Company’s reinforcements will be able to respond in time."
Just then, Harry Keen shouted again, "The enemy’s coming again—armored vehicles, tanks, and troop carriers, a lot of people..."
Gao Yuan leaned closer to the display screen and after a glance, he said, "How many? Why so few?"
Gao Yuan was surprised because the reinforcements consisted of only three tanks, about a dozen armored vehicles, and additionally, trucks carrying infantry. There were at least a dozen trucks—altogether the forces amounted to about the size of a battalion.
However, even if the enemy planned to conduct a combined arms operation with infantry and tanks, the number of troops arriving was far too small.
There certainly had to be more troops on the way, that was for sure. Otherwise, relying on these forces alone, they would definitely be no match for the Solar System Company.
The two BTR-90 armored vehicles had survived and even joined up with the tank units, the two armed pickup trucks, ineffective against tanks, were now part of the tank formation as well.
Gao Yuan was pleased with the situation he observed from the drone, relieved and happy that fewer lives had been lost.
The drone suddenly started to move, and Harry Keane whispered, "Boss, I must retrieve the drone now, the battery is running low."
"Hmm, launch another drone, maintain aerial surveillance over the battlefield, and also, try to establish contact with our allies, go and tell the people from Squad 12 that we have a drone, we can report to them about the situation ahead..."
A thunderous boom interrupted Gao Yuan’s words, then, everyone instinctively looked towards the direction of the explosion.
Klaus was panic-stricken, Harry Keane was petrified, but Gao Yuan urgently demanded, "What’s happening!"
Klaus was so flustered he could hardly speak, pointing towards the sky, he stammered, "Airplane! Airplane!"
The consecutive sounds of explosions made Klaus cover his head with both hands, then he muttered to himself, "It’s over, now it’s all over..."
Gao Yuan saw one airplane, then a second, and a third, three planes flying at a very low altitude, swooping over the Uranus Troops.
The leading plane leisurely circled in the sky, turned, and then there was a flash of light from its underside, followed by a loud explosion on the ground.
Gao Yuan felt like he had fallen into an icy cavern, his whole body chilled.
The enemy actually had planes, and they were truly using them.
Klaus said softly, "I know this type of plane all too well, the Super Gobsmacking Bird, a propeller-driven fixed-wing attack aircraft, the model is outdated, but the avionics system is very advanced, it can take off from a simple dirt runway, as opposed to the complicated and maintenance-heavy armed helicopters, this attack aircraft is too well-suited for this place, it can carry laser-guided bombs, rocket pods, and anti-tank missiles, our tanks are done for, completely done for..."
Gao Yuan stared blankly at the planes in the sky, then he whispered, "Yes, it’s all over."
It really was all over.
Ralph was like a madman, screaming, "Why are there planes, don’t these lunatics realize the planes will attract the aliens! These damn lunatics, fuck!"
The Sanitation Worker and the Solar System Company still had a chance to wage a battle here, because the aliens had no interest in this primitive land.
If the Serpent People had as high an interest in this place as they did in Shenzhou, then war would not be possible, for whoever dared to assemble a large army would first have to face the Serpent People’s spacecraft.
A member of the Uranus 12 Squad ran over, frantically shouting, "Evacuate! Evacuate! Our tanks are done for, now forget everything else, quickly evacuate this place!"
He was speaking English, not Russian, which the soldier who had been composed all this time, even watching his squad leader die without any reaction, was now completely panic-stricken.
He ran up to Gao Yuan and then said in a desperate and helpless tone, "The enemy has used planes, our tanks are wiped out, none spared, but most importantly, as long as there are planes taking off, the aliens will surely come!"
Without any need for reminders, Gao Yuan from Shenzhou of course knew that the aliens would be drawn by planes.
For the first time, Gao Yuan felt what true despair was.
