Chapter 344: Chapter 237 Skipped
Renato followed the Russian away, while the Russian wearing the green hat stayed behind with five other Israelis.
It was hard to say if they were watching Gao Yuan and his group, given the stark disparity in strength; on one side were Gao Yuan and his group with five armored vehicles and dozens of people, but on the other side were only six men with the Green Hat.
Renato left to make the Israelis give way, but how it would turn out in the end was uncertain.
Andrew’s large convoy had stopped long ago and even retreated ten kilometers, fearing a bombardment from the Israelis.
Gao Yuan and Li Yang approached an armored vehicle, joined by Panxin and Li Jingang.
Casually handing over the gold watch he had just obtained to Yu Shunzhou, Gao Yuan immediately whispered, "What do you think this is all about?"
Li Yang’s face was grave as he whispered back, "It’s hard to say, the current situation is very strange."
"Strange? What’s strange about it?"
"The Russian just said that the Rebel Army has thousands of people! Now, what situation would allow the organization of a force of thousands, and also to take the offensive against the stronger Israeli Government forces? Without someone organizing and supporting them from behind, that would be impossible."
After speaking softly, Li Yang slowly glanced over the group and said, "Who is our biggest enemy on this trip?"
Realizing suddenly, Gao Yuan said, "The Cleaners?"
Li Yang nodded softly and said with resignation, "Apart from the Cleaners, I can’t think of any other possibility. America is now struggling to protect itself and certainly doesn’t have the resources to support an Israeli rebellion. And as for other countries... I think no nation in its right mind would focus on Israel, already devastated by war."
"The Cleaners supporting the Rebel Army..."
Gao Yuan had a sudden idea, "Should we fight the Rebel Army, capture a few prisoners, and ask around?"
Panxin shook his head, and Li Yang also smiled wryly, shaking his head. Gao Yuan whispered, "What, no good?"
Li Yang said very seriously, "Yes, it’s no good. Our goal is in Africa, not here. We should pass through quickly without delay. Besides, I’m just speculating that the Cleaners are behind the rebels; it could also be someone else. Either way, we shouldn’t waste too much effort here."
Lowering his voice, Panxin said, "What I’m worried about now is whether Renato can find us a way out. If the Israelis won’t let us pass, what then?"
"It’s not possible they won’t let us pass. At most they won’t let Andrew and his group through, but we definitely won’t have a problem," someone replied.
Li Yang looked up, glanced at Gao Yuan, and whispered, "If Israel really refuses to let us go, then we’ll just make our own way, telling Andrew to find his own route. I don’t think Israel would take the risk of pursuing them."
Li Jingang opened his mouth as if to say something but didn’t.
Li Yang looked at Li Jingang and said, "What’s the matter, can’t bear to part with your... student?"
"No, no, it’s just a bit embarrassing, but the greater good is what matters, the mission comes first."
To abandon the companions who had traveled together so far seemed somewhat dishonorable to Gao Yuan, but there seemed to be no reason to oppose it either.
Li Yang sighed and said, "Of course, if we can all go together, we should still try. Let’s see if we can meet with Basar later; if he agrees to let us all pass, that would be best."
Panxin frowned and said, "We’re only on the eastern side of Damascus now, not far from the airport, and it’s needless to say that Damascus is surely occupied by zombies. So the question is, where is the Rebel Army’s stronghold? If we leave here, could we encounter the rebels? Controlling the traffic routes is basic military knowledge."
Li Yang said, "There is that possibility, but I don’t think it’s a big problem. With our strength, we can forcefully break through."
Speaking quietly, Panxin said, "This is what I think: the rebels might naturally have a good impression of the Americans. If so, perhaps sticking with Andrew and his men could provide a safer passage through this area."
Li Yang had an epiphany and said, "Oh, I see what you’ve been waiting for here."
"Go on, what are you talking about? I’m purely thinking about the big picture, don’t twist my words," the reply came.
Gao Yuan smiled and said, "Listening to all you experts, what’s the use of talking nonsense? If you ask me, if they let us pass, we pass; if they don’t, we go around; if we can’t go around, we fight. Whoever we encounter, so be it, why make it complicated."
Li Jingang nodded and said, "Well, it’s naive, but... that’s basically it."
Just then, Panxin glanced towards the airport and whispered, "A car’s coming, just one. I reckon it’s good news; otherwise, it would have been tanks."
Everyone’s gaze shifted to the approaching car that swiftly drew near and stopped right beside the armored vehicle. Then Renato jumped out of the car and urgently said, "Quick, notify Andrew to bring the convoy over, we’re about to depart."
Gao Yuan could hardly believe his ears and loudly asked, "We can go through here?"
"Yes, that’s why we need the convoy here quickly. Oh, and one more thing, these few will join us."
Three more Russians got out of the car, all bearing large and small bags, ready for a long journey.
Perplexed, Gao Yuan asked, "What does that mean?"
A Russian dressed in an odd mix-match shouted, "We heard you’re going to fight the Aliens, and we happen to want to go too. According to the Blue Star Alliance treaty, we too have the duty and responsibility to send troops, so these four of us are the representatives of Russia."
Gao Yuan was taken aback, and the Russian added, "What, are you not welcoming?"
Li Yang looked towards Gao Yuan, who after a moment’s thought, said, "Welcome?"
To welcome or not to welcome? That did seem to be the question.
The team was already quite chaotic, and adding a few Russians would certainly make things more so. Furthermore, the NATO forces led by Andrew only wanted to go home, and Gao Yuan’s group aimed for Africa, so they were soon to part ways and go their separate paths. However, with these Russians joining and their goal being to fight the Aliens, it was clear they would not be leaving midway through the journey.
Sometimes, more people didn’t mean better, particularly when there was no unity of command. More people could just add to the chaos.
After thinking about it, Li Yang wasn’t sure whether to welcome the Russians, so he passed the decision back to Gao Yuan.
"You’re the captain; it’s up to you."
Gao Yuan said with a wry smile, "Then we should welcome them. Staying here makes us easy targets, no, staying here is too dangerous."
Immediately, Li Yang said to the Russian, "Welcome to the team. We can talk about how to unify command en route, but for now, let’s hurry and leave this place."
