Chapter 328: Chapter 321: Admiring Each Other
For some reason, Gao Yuan found Renato quite agreeable to the eye.
Although they hadn’t spoken a single word, nor looked each other in the eye, Gao Yuan just found Renato very pleasant to look at.
Perhaps this was what they called a mutual recognition of kindred spirits?
Heroes admiring heroes.
As for where the heroism lay, that was not yet apparent, but perhaps it was the demeanor he displayed in front of Andrew.
In Andrew’s eyes, Renato was a deserter; he was convinced of it, otherwise, he wouldn’t have repeatedly ignored Renato to his face, asking questions only to those three Germany soldiers.
But to Gao Yuan, he quite admired Renato for his courage to escape.
The people at Kabul Air Force Base didn’t stay out of loyalty to their duty, as Gao Yuan had long ago inquired; those at Kabul Air Force Base refused to flee with the troops in Kandahar purely because they didn’t believe they could leave Afghan and safely make it back to Europa.
Now that the Aliens had arrived, all human conflicts could be considered civil wars, and America had already been too overwhelmed to take care of itself, making global hegemony impossible to maintain under the premise that the survival of all humankind was in question, let alone wanting to occupy Afghan.
However, the people at Kabul Air Force Base didn’t hesitate to reject Andrew’s proposal to leave together—they chose to stay and take each day as it came.
Gao Yuan didn’t actually know the answer; he didn’t know whether Renato was technically a deserter. Perhaps, as a soldier, he might have scorned Renato’s actions, but as a steadfast survivalist, Gao Yuan quite admired him.
Because there was an important premise here: if a country required a person to stay at their post, yet the person fled, then that person was a deserter to be despised.
But if those around chose to stay put and slowly wait for death because of huge risks, unwilling to gamble their lives on a bid for home, refusing to make the decision to either succeed in making it back or die trying, then it was right to leave such companions.
So Gao Yuan felt a hero’s kinship and a favorable impression towards Renato, who had managed to bring three men with him from Kabul to Kandahar.
Andrew had been staring at Renato in front of him until Renato became a bit unsettled, then he quickly chose a new strategy.
"Sir, the people at Kabul Base are done for. They’d rather go out looting than risk leaving this godforsaken place, because no one believes it’s possible to make it home overland via Persia or Russia. No one believes it. They’d rather stay where they are, at least they can live a bit longer that way."
Renato’s face took on a flattering smile, and then he became meek and humble.
Glancing around, Renato used an exaggerated tone, raised both hands in front of him and spread his palms, then with an astonished tone said, "Look at this place, look at the people around, their morale is high, and they orderly do what they’re supposed to; why do they have the courage to return home?"
He asked himself, then answered.
Renato spoke admiringly, "Now I’ve found the reason, it’s because they have a leader like you, commanding them so they don’t hysterically succumb to fear or lose their way, this is all thanks to you."
Andrew was thoroughly flattered.
If Renato hadn’t been so arrogant at first, like a leader coming for an inspection, perhaps Andrew wouldn’t have been so antagonistic towards him. But it turned out alright; Renato’s initially haughty and later humble demeanor immensely satisfied Andrew’s vanity.
So, Andrew decided to forgive Renato.
"We’re ready to leave at any moment, we could leave anytime now, you... since you’ve come, you might as well evacuate with us."
Gratitude overflowed in his speech, as Renato earnestly uttered many words of thanks, with an obsequious expression that even disgusted Gao Yuan.
After a string of flattering remarks, Renato shifted the topic, "If we are to evacuate, perhaps I can be of use. I have a deep understanding of the Afghans’ psyche and possess a wealth of negotiation experience."
Andrew didn’t take Renato’s words too seriously; he nodded and turned to the German soldier who had been hastily brought in as a translator, "Find this captain a place to sleep, take him to the officers’ quarters."
After speaking, Andrew said to Renato, "That’s all for now; I’ll get in touch if there’s anything."
Andrew obviously didn’t take Renato too seriously, but Gao Yuan felt differently; he believed Renato was being seriously underestimated.
"Translate for me."
Gao Yuan whispered to Li Yang and then smiled at Renato, "Hello, Mr. Alphano, may I have a chat with you?"
Li Yang translated, and Andrew looked a bit puzzled, but he quickly said, "Alright, you guys talk; I have matters to attend to."
Andrew left, leaving Renato behind, while the three German soldiers who had come with Renato were taken away by their compatriots.
Renato was isolated, with no one taking the Italian too seriously.
Yet, Renato’s interest in Gao Yuan and Li Yang was equally intense. He looked at Li Yang, then at Gao Yuan, and with a warm smile, said, "Hello, may I ask if you are Shenzhou People?"
After shaking hands with Renato, Gao Yuan pondered for a moment and then said, "Well done."
"Hmm, what do you mean?"
"Being able to come here from Kabul is not something just anyone can do, so I’m saying you did well."
Renato observed for a moment, realizing Gao Yuan was not being sarcastic, he sighed feelingly, "But not everyone can see that."
"Gold will always glitter, Mr. Alphano; let’s talk, shall we? Are you familiar with Afghanistan?"
"If you mean the country itself, I am not very familiar. But if you mean the people of this country, then I am very familiar; I consider myself extremely familiar."
The conversation was casual, but Gao Yuan soon felt there was nothing more to discuss, as he and Renato really had no common topics.
After carefully observing Renato, Gao Yuan suddenly said, "You must be feeling quite pleased with yourself now."
Renato was taken aback by the question translated by Li Yang, and after pondering, he said, "Pleased about what?"
"Because Colonel Andrew Marshall, this typical American officer, is just too easy to handle. For example, he hasn’t realized that you are not really a military man, let alone an officer. Am I right?"
Renato stared at Gao Yuan and, after a moment, shook his head slowly, "Oh, brother, that’s not something to say lightly."
Li Yang was also shocked because, as a professional bodyguard, he hadn’t noticed that Renato was not a military man.
Gao Yuan merely smiled, "Alright, no need to deny it hastily; I’m not planning on exposing you. I’m just purely curious, buddy, what exactly do you do?"
