The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse -
Chapter 283 - 277: Great Victory
Chapter 283: Chapter 277: Great Victory
In fact, Gao Yuan felt he hardly did anything significant; he simply emptied a dozen or so cannon rounds without knowing where they’d hit, before tossing grenades into the ammunition box and blowing all six 120mm mortar positions sky-high.
He also threw grenades haphazardly in areas hidden from the enemy’s view, remaining concealed in the trenches, killing at least a dozen. Numbers weren’t the key thing, though; it was crucial that the officers Gao Yuan took out were essentially low-level, with the highest-ranking being a lieutenant.
The command post remained untouched, simply because it couldn’t be found. But don’t forget, Gao Yuan had specialized training in operating heavy machine guns. So when he spotted a heavy machine gun position, he couldn’t resist the urge to swing the gun around and unload several belts of ammo.
In the darkness, others couldn’t see Gao Yuan, yet he could operate as if it were broad daylight. This advantage was so great that it made the battle seem less like combat and even easier than a game.
After all, if the NPCs in a game are too unintelligent, the game becomes boring. That’s why Gao Yuan was terrible at gaming, but on this real-life battlefield, he thrived like a fish in water.
Finally, after Gao Yuan had turned the battlefield upside down, the enemy started launching illumination flares, aiming them above their own position.
Without the illumination flares, they couldn’t find Gao Yuan or see him. Operating under the assumption that everyone around them was an ally, how could they continue the fight?
With the illumination flares deployed, Gao Yuan had to find a dark corner to hide.
It was that simple. By the time the enemy surrounded the position where they presumed Gao Yuan to be, he was already hundreds of meters away.
Even with illumination flares in the sky, as long as Gao Yuan stayed still and hidden, he faced no danger whatsoever.
Every story needs an ending, and so does every battle. The enemy troops at the front began to grow restless. They didn’t retreat but the sporadic assaults from an unseen foe, unable to get a glimpse of the enemy made them mentally collapse.
Gao Yuan felt the timing was about right, though he couldn’t be sure. Yet it seemed the right moment for a probing attack.
"Nemesis calling Mr. Jian, I think the enemy is beginning to get confused. You can launch a probing attack now, over."
"Mr. Jian received, one minute for artillery preparation, attack will commence in five minutes. Keep concealed, over."
Gao Yuan waited silently for a minute, after which artillery began to pound the enemy’s positions. Though it was a probing attack, not a step in the procedure was missed.
The so-called artillery coverage was nothing more than mortars and rocket artillery, which, before the arrival of the Aliens, served as infantry support firepower, a fair distance from heavy firepower. But now, the mortars were considered heavy artillery.
Gao Yuan faintly heard shouts, then peeked outside to see tanks charging forward.
The enemy’s anti-tank firepower didn’t seem to make much impact, and the infantry probably crumbled on contact.
A probing attack that lasted only a few minutes swiftly escalated into a full assault, while Gao Yuan found an opportunity to discreetly move aside, avoiding friendly fire.
Then he just watched the show.
The saying ’an army’s defeat is like a landslide’ was vividly demonstrated on this night.
Some of the enemy fled, some held their positions only to be surrounded, divided, and annihilated by the tanks and Infantry Fighting Vehicles. Our infantry, eager and ferocious beyond words, stormed through the gaps, eradicating those who dared resist.
Then they split into small squads, advancing fearlessly, not trembling before the enemy, but persistently thrusting forward. It was surely Panxin and his assault teams participating in the charge.
"Mr. Jian, have you broken through? You’re now crossing a... It’s gone, you’re attacking a house, is that you? Over!"
"Mr. Jian here, we’ve just cleared a bunker. Where are you? Over."
"Did you come out from a bunker? Over."
"No, we have found the enemy’s operational maps and a lot of documents, which could be their operational plans. This place must be a command center. Over."
Too many people, too chaotic. Gao Yuan thought for a moment and then said, "Turn on your lights for a second, I’ll come over and join you."
From a distance, Gao Yuan saw lights flare three times from a low bunker and then go out, so he finally confirmed the position of Panxin and his team.
Gao Yuan ran over and joined Panxin and his team in the bunker.
"I almost didn’t see you again..."
With a sigh of regret, Gao Yuan said this while Yu Shunzhou, holding a rifle, peeked out of the bunker’s entrance, saying, "How could almost not see us, we’ve only been separated for less than an hour."
Waving his hand to indicate Yu Shunzhou didn’t understand, Gao Yuan then asked Panxin, "So, what do we do next?"
"We don’t have to do anything next. Our only goal was to ensure your safety, and now our mission is accomplished. We just have to stay here and wait."
Looking out from the bunker, Gao Yuan said sadly, "It’s truly a sight to behold..."
Li Jingang also looked out and commented, "It really is magnificent. I’ve waited a lifetime for such a grand spectacle, only to not be able to participate. What a pity."
Gao Yuan heaved a deep sigh and said, "I feel even more regretful. I had planned to wipe out that absurd nation, but unfortunately, it’s not possible now. It’s such a pity, a real pity..."
Li Jingang, with a helpless expression, replied, "Why not be happier to be alive? Surviving is what’s most important. If we’ve won, let it be. To exterminate a nation could lead to death, and what’s worse, we could have been wiped out, which would’ve been the end of everything."
All Gao Yuan and his team could do was engage in idle chat, while the battle outside raged on until a friendly forces commander, surrounded by a crowd of soldiers, entered the bunker.
It was a Lieutenant Colonel who grasped Panxin’s hand firmly, with glowing cheeks, exclaiming loudly, "You’ve killed the enemy’s entire leadership core, otherwise this battle wouldn’t have gone so smoothly."
Panxin looked towards Gao Yuan. Gao Yuan shook his head slightly, so Panxin, without changing his expression or missing a beat, said, "This is exactly what we’re good at."
"We’ve already taken care of the enemy’s bodies. It’s unbelievable. The enemy was planning to launch a major assault on us tonight, but we struck first, catching them by surprise."
As the friendly officer and Panxin were having their spirited conversation, Gao Yuan looked boredly outside the bunker again.
This wasn’t the outcome Gao Yuan wanted. At least he didn’t want to let the enemy off so easily, but since the war here had ended, so be it.
"We’ve completely broken through the enemy’s defenses, and they’ve begun a full retreat. I’m off to pursue the enemy. The documents here will be properly taken care of by someone else. Leave the rest to us, you guys can take a rest now."
After embracing Panxin with great vigor again, the friendly forces officer smiled and said, "Goodbye."
