The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse -
Chapter 277 - 271 Mistake
Chapter 277: Chapter 271 Mistake
Many details were finalised over lunch, but some specific matters were unlikely to be concluded that day.
Pakistan would send people to negotiate with the Sanitation Workers on how to conduct communications and negotiations. Despite the fierce battles raging, the Sanitation Workers would presumably not refuse negotiations, as they had just suffered a heavy defeat and Pakistan held several thousand prisoners.
After lunch, Gao Yuan called Xinghe, Panxin, and Li Jingang, and they went from the accommodations arranged by Pakistan to where Yao Yi and the others were staying.
In fact, it was very close, just a hundred meters in a straight line. If there were not so few habitable basements in Gilgit, Yao Yi and his group would live even closer to the highest echelon of the Pakistani government.
Eleven people crammed into two underground storage rooms of one house. The basement was packed tightly with beds, leaving only a very narrow corridor in the middle— at most thirty centimeters wide.
To have an ambassador stay in such a place was truly a bit of a hardship.
Yao Yi said with a look of emotion, "It’s a bit cramped here, but very safe, enough to withstand the Sanitation Workers’ artillery. At first, the conditions we lived in were much better, but they did not withstand the shelling, so many of our comrades were lost to a single artillery strike. Afterward, we were urgently moved here and haven’t left for three months."
Xinghe wrinkled her nose and said, "It smells bad here, I don’t want to stay."
Both Yao Yi and Chen Wei looked embarrassed. Gao Yuan glanced at Xinghe and said, "Bear with it and stay quiet."
Xinghe pouted but still carefully sat on the bed by the wall, made of wooden planks.
Even sitting down required doing so in a crossed, relative position.
Gao Yuan said to Li Jingang, "Mr. Hao, keep an eye on the door."
Li Jingang nodded. Then he asked Chen Wei, "How’s the soundproofing here, Chief?"
"The soundproofing is okay—um, King Kong, don’t go out."
Chen Wei shouted, "Xiao Wei! Xiao Wei!"
A soldier looking about thirty appeared at the doorway. Chen Wei, who would have to ask Gao Yuan and Yao Yi to move if he went out, said from his bed, "Xiao Wei, go keep watch above ground, and give us a shout if someone approaches."
"Yes, Chief."
Xiao Wei went up, and Li Jingang then leaned against the door and said in a low voice, "Let’s leave the door open."
Yao Yi said calmly, "This originally belonged to a family’s basement storage. The house was requisitioned for our use, the ground floor was set aside for us, and the original family moved to the second floor."
Gao Yuan was taken aback and asked, "The second floor?"
The second floor was gone, blown away by a shell, leaving a large hole, half the house was no more.
Yao Yi nodded, "Their own home— who would want to give that up? The government had a difficult time with the requisition, almost coming to blows. But when the officer in charge told the family that it was for the Shenzhou People, they agreed and even gave us the first floor."
The atmosphere grew somber. Gao Yuan said softly, "But the second floor..."
Yao Yi nodded, speaking softly, "Yes, the basement was too crowded, so we stayed on the first floor. When shelling started, we’d take shelter in the basement. But then... a shell fell, and out of a family of seven, six were killed. Only a four-year-old child survived because he was playing with one of our female comrades at the time."
Gao Yuan didn’t know what to say. Yao Yi lowered his head and continued, "We can’t contact our country; all communications have been cut off. We’re unable to report our situation, let alone ask for reinforcements. Later we found a radio, but still couldn’t get through. So, I thought about how I could help the Pakistani people, how I could actually do something for them. Then you arrived."
Yao Yi looked at Gao Yuan and said, "Now we can’t ask for help from home, can’t even get in touch. And considering the conditions back home, there’s probably no way to send aid. So it all depends on Pakistan itself. We just hope Pakistan can successfully negotiate with the Sanitation Workers, then you’ll have the possibility to continue westward."
Gao Yuan said without hesitation, "Although relying on negotiations is frustrating, Pakistan can only negotiate now, right? After all, it doesn’t have the power to completely drive back the Sanitation Workers."
Yao Yi nodded. Then he said softly, "Can you now explain what mission you’re exactly on? Of course, if it’s not convenient, never mind."
Gao Yuan looked towards Xinghe and said, "Take off your hat."
Xinghe shrugged and took off her hat, revealing about two centimeters of green hair beneath her dyed black hair that had grown out.
Gao Yuan turned his head and whispered, "He’s an alien."
Yao Yi and Chen Wei both opened their mouths wide in shock as Gao Yuan continued, "Not the aliens who are attacking us, but the ones who are here to save us. And our mission is to head to Africa in search of a medical pod."
Gao Yuan explained the situation in detail, and Yao Yi and Chen Wei did not even dare to express their amazement. Having worked in foreign affairs for a long time, although it was in a friendly country, they understood all too well the importance of maintaining secrecy.
After Gao Yuan finished speaking, Chen Wei struggled to contain his excitement. He stood up and said quietly, "Are you saying that we have already obtained alien technology?"
"Yes."
"And if we find that medical pod, we could possibly defeat the Serpent People?"
"Yes."
Chen Wei vigorously wiped his mouth with his hand, then rubbed his face with both hands while Yao Yi was shaking all over, clutching Gao Yuan’s hand, shaking it repeatedly, but without saying a word.
For the full two minutes, the excited Chen Wei and Yao Yi did not make a sound; they were venting their emotions in their own ways, yet silently.
Yao Yi finally took a deep breath, then said softly, "So that’s how it is. No wonder."
After discussing the ambush, Chen Wei, with a look of anger, said, "It’s a pity about Comrade Zhao Qiang. You know him; you know they could have become... Ah!"
After hitting the bed board, Chen Wei whispered, "Comrades like Zhao Qiang are even rarer than generals. It’s truly a great loss!"
Yao Yi shook his head and said, "Now is not the time for grief and regret. What’s important is how to let Spark Squad continue their journey. It seems the Sanitation Worker must open the passage; the terrain here is too treacherous to even think about taking a detour."
Chen Wei whispered, "It seems that Xiao Gao definitely cannot be involved in the negotiations. No one from Spark Squad should be. It should just be the two of us."
Yao Yi nodded his head and thought for a moment before saying to Gao Yuan, "The bottom line for the Pakistani side is that as long as the Sanitation Worker retreats to the line of control before the start of the war, they will release all the prisoners."
Gao Yuan nodded, and Yao Yi continued, "Right now, food in Pakistan is extremely scarce, but after breaking the blockade of the eastern route, food can still be collected from other areas, though it won’t be quick."
Gao Yuan said, "I’m curious, doesn’t Pakistan have any food reserves at all?"
With a bitter expression, Yao Yi replied, "They did prepare, of course they did. Our country disclosed the technology and process for manufacturing vaccines to the whole world and even provided Pakistan with vaccines for ten million people. After being warned, Pakistan indeed made preparations. But their capabilities are limited, and although Gilgit had been chosen as an alternative government evacuation refuge, it was just a backup. The main site was in Abbottabad, where a large granary was built. The other refuges, Nalan and Jidral, were small, backup shelters designed for a limited number of government officials. Unexpectedly, Pakistan withstood the zombie crisis, but the Sanitation Worker attacked at that moment."
Chen Wei then said, "Iborg City fell during the alien attack, but Abbottabad is close to the Kashmir frontline, a military stronghold. The refuge was set up on the outskirts of the city. Currently, the situation is that with the Sanitation Worker’s surprise attack, it’s not known whether Abbottabad has fallen, but after the government moved to Gilgit, which was almost untouched by the virus, they were encircled by troops sent by the Sanitation Worker."
"The Sanitation Worker is very cruel; it’s an evil organization, not a state, so they don’t act according to the norms of a state. They burned all the homes, stole all the food, and forced all the refugees, who weren’t affected by the virus but lost their homes in the war, to flood into Gilgit. Originally there were nearly ten thousand people here, plus another ten thousand military and government personnel, but then nearly thirty thousand refugees poured in. The already limited food was stretched even further. Additionally, since this was a temporary refuge, the troops here protecting the military and government leaders consisted mainly of infantry, severely lacking heavy weaponry."
Yao Yi finished speaking with a wry smile and waved his hand, "In short, the Pakistani side also made many mistakes, otherwise they wouldn’t be as passive as they are now. Also, they’ve captured nearly ten thousand of the eastern Sanitation Workers. Those people can’t be left to starve, but Mr. Mahari said that the food seized from the Sanitation Worker is very scarce, hardly enough even to feed the prisoners. This way, the food shortage becomes even more acute. In the end, either all the prisoners are released, or..."
Yao Yi made a cutting gesture with his right hand, "I guess Pakistan won’t go that far, after all those prisoners are important bargaining chips. So, I think the Sanitation Worker will retreat."
Gao Yuan said with a troubled look, "That’s right. I might not understand these broader issues, but there’s one thing I want to know. What if the Sanitation Workers’ thought processes are different from normal people? What if they can’t think of the things normal people would, or refuse to do what they can think of? After all, if the Sanitation Worker had normal brains, they wouldn’t have attacked during an alien invasion."
Yao Yi and Chen Wei looked at each other because they were not familiar with the Sanitation Worker and didn’t know their true nature. However, considering that the Sanitation Worker surfaced during the alien invasion when the world was in chaos, they might indeed do something bizarre again.
After exchanging glances, Yao Yi said with a wry smile, "We still have to try. We just hope that the Pakistani side can persuade the Sanitation Worker and that the Sanitation Worker hasn’t completely lost their mind."
