The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse -
Chapter 268 - 262: The Spectacle of War
Chapter 268: Chapter 262: The Spectacle of War
Flatbreads, curry, all sorts of beans, this was actually field rations? Gao Yuan was puzzled – not to mention a super big eater like himself, even an ordinary person’s calorie needs couldn’t be satisfied with this.
He knew that most of the Indian population were vegetarians, but even so, it just didn’t make sense for their soldiers to do the same.
And it wasn’t just about being vegetarian; why did it also have to taste so bad?
Gao Yuan no longer fussy about food these days as his situation didn’t allow it, but even so, he still couldn’t rely on the Indian field rations to get enough calories.
Honest to God, Gao Yuan had never eaten something so disgusting in his life. Perhaps it wasn’t fair to judge the food of a country with a billion people so harshly, but he swore, he had never eaten anything this unpalatable in his life.
Can you believe a military ration without even a piece of chocolate?
Gao Yuan felt lost and, in the end, threw away the found field rations.
With a heavy heart, he pulled out two energy bars that he had carried for emergencies and ate them with tears in his eyes. The taste, which had previously seemed extremely unpalatable due to eating too many, now seemed so delicious.
Having wasted ten minutes searching for the hard-to-swallow food, Gao Yuan felt it was not worth it, so when he decided to leave the temporary residence occupied by the Indians, he saw something in the corner.
This place was originally a Pakistani family’s home, and it was unknown where the family had gone now, but many of their things had been left behind, including several children’s toys on the bedroom table, among which a pink plastic horn caught Gao Yuan’s attention.
Gao Yuan picked up the horn, and then realized it was extendable – pulling it out, it was a toy horn in red, yellow, and green.
This thing could be useful.
Gao Yuan put the horn in his mouth and blew into it; not only did it make a sound, the sound was loud.
Military bugles had once been phased out of the Shenzhou Army, and the bugler as a military role had disappeared for a while. However, bugle calls had not completely vanished – activities like waking up, assembling, and meal times were signalled with bugle calls, only they were recorded playback.
But now Shenzhou had reintroduced the bugler, and the sound of bugles had become quite common again.
What’s more, during the conflict of the 60’s, Shenzhou’s soldiers had charged to the sound of the bugle calls.
The Shenzhou soldiers charging with the bugle call overwhelming the skies had once been the nightmare of the Indians. Even now, although the current active-duty Indian soldiers had never heard a bugle call, the military bugle still scared them.
Gao Yuan held the toy horn in his hands.
"We’re pretty much prepared now. We’ve restocked on ammunition and collected weapons. Here, take this bag. It’s got twenty grenades inside," said Panxin.
Gao Yuan didn’t reach out to take the backpack handed over by Panxin; instead, he held up the horn and said, "See what this is?"
"A horn? Hmm? Nice find!"
Panxin took the horn, then yelled out to Li Jingang, "Mr. Hao, look at this. Catch."
"Don’t throw it!"
Gao Yuan quickly grabbed Panxin’s hand, saying, "It’s plastic, don’t break it..."
Li Jingang came over, took the horn, and then smiled knowingly, saying, "Good. With this thing, we can apply some pressure on the Indians, scare them to death!"
After speaking, Li Jingang laughed and said, "I’m also a bugler part-time. I’m telling you, blowing a bugle takes some effort. I practiced for a long time, and in the end, I was considered the best, so I became the part-time bugler. But I never really got the chance to blow it; we usually just play the recordings."
Gao Yuan slung a bag of grenades over his shoulder and said, "I need to choose a gun. Brandishing a gun can be intimidating, but this one really doesn’t work!"
Gao Yuan pointed to a rifle on the ground and added, "I just snatched one of these, and it’s always jamming."
"That’s the INSAS rifle. Didn’t I tell you? Just toss it if you see one. Just now, we hit the ’Black Cat’ special forces squad of the Indians here. Their night vision devices aren’t bad, and they use the MP5 and Israel’s TAR21 rifles, or AKs. Pick one. Anyway, their guns are all unused; the magazines are full," Panxin replied.
Gao Yuan was shocked and exclaimed, "Are you kidding me? ’Black Cat’? Isn’t that supposed to be the ultimate special forces of the Indians? Just like that, wiped out by us? I didn’t feel they were that tough, huh?"
Li Jingang laughed and said, "Tough? Please, could you stop desecrating the word ’tough’? A special forces squad that takes nine hours to reach the mission location and spends three days to kill two terrorists, suffering twenty casualties themselves, dares to call themselves tough? If ’Black Cat’ is tough, then what should we call special operations soldiers like us? Invincible?"
Panxin also smiled and said, "Alright, stop mocking them. The ’Black Cat’ gear is still decent. All the grenades were taken from them – uniform American M67 grenades. Just to let you know, they’re not like the 82 grenades you’re used to. These are delay-fused, four to five seconds. And there’s also the M84 stun grenades and smoke grenades. I can grab some more for you if you want."
In a low voice, Li Jingang added, "There are also the Russian RGO grenades, but we didn’t grab those for you. Stick to one primary type."
Gao Yuan knew now wasn’t the time for a chat, but he couldn’t help commenting, "Seriously? The Indians need to import even their hand grenades?"
"Yeah."
"Yes."
Panxin and Li Jingang nodded simultaneously, and then Panxin whispered, "So they all use imported goods, heh heh..."
Gao Yuan sighed and said, "Consider it as me stocking up some bullets for you guys. I use an AK rifle too, got a car?"
"Yes, a lot of functional ones, we just need to get one and we’re good to go."
Gao Yuan glanced around, picked up a gun at random, and said, "Then let’s set off!"
Today was a day of repeated blows to his standards. Gao Yuan grabbed a rifle, took two ammo bags, and then he walked over to Liu Chunxiao and the others, whispering, "The three of us will continue to fight downstairs. You three monitor them here. Try to keep these people, but if it really doesn’t work out... just don’t let them run away."
Liu Chunxiao nodded and whispered back, "Understood, be extra careful."
Gao Yuan nodded at Yu Shunzhou, then quickly ran back to Panxin and Li Jingang.
When choosing a vehicle, of course, they looked for one with combat capabilities. Gao Yuan and his companions picked an open-top jeep produced by Tata, the kind with a heavy machine gun mounted on the back.
The car started up, with Panxin driving and Li Jingang in the back ready to man the machine gun at any moment. They were still far from safe and needed to be very cautious.
Driving along the highway, they could clearly see the horrific aftermath of the exploded artillery positions. Panxin steered the car around a large chunk of scrap metal.
The car had only gone three kilometers, not even five minutes before they saw Indian soldiers walking ahead on the road.
"No way? It’s been over twenty minutes, even if they were crawling, they couldn’t have only covered this little distance, right?"
Li Jingang reacted even more strongly than Gao Yuan did because in his view, covering just three kilometers in over twenty minutes was truly even slower than crawling.
"Put yourself in their shoes—if you were a vegetarian all year round, you couldn’t run far either."
This time Gao Yuan spoke up for the Indians and then said to Panxin, "I don’t know what to do with this situation. You call it—should we scatter them, or just keep driving forward?"
Driving the fleeing soldiers could confuse the enemy’s lines, but judging by the current situation, these fleeing soldiers wouldn’t complete even ten kilometers by dawn.
"It’s not logical for them to be this slow even in flight. Could it be that they’ve misjudged the situation and think they’re no longer in danger?"
Panxin pondered for a moment and said, "King Kong, fire a couple of shots, give them a lash and see if they’ll run any faster."
Panxin stopped the car, and he and Gao Yuan looked around, checking to see if any fugitives had run up the neighboring hillsides, while Li Jingang grabbed the heavy machine gun and unleashed a burst of bullets at the slowly walking soldiers on the road.
Two men were hit and fell to the ground, and then the long line of fleeing soldiers suddenly ran like animals whipped into action, sprinting away rapidly.
In the darkness, one of the fastest-running soldiers ran straight off the roadside cliff and let out a long, harrowing scream.
"I get it, they don’t want to run; they can’t see the road."
After Li Jingang finished speaking, he sighed and then said with a helpless tone, "Now I feel both irritated and sorry for them. Look at them, they don’t look like soldiers at all. I can hardly bring myself to shoot at them; they’re just too easy to bully."
Having said that, Li Jingang fired another volley, but this time he couldn’t bring himself to shoot at the people and instead swept the bullets through the air.
Following that, the fleeing soldiers who were still running stopped in their tracks, and someone shouted something that Panxin and the others couldn’t understand. Then they saw soldier after soldier kneeling on the ground, lifting their rifles overhead.
"Don’t surrender, damn it! They really can’t surrender!"
Li Jingang unleashed two more bursts of gunfire, but no one moved. Everyone stopped—some kneeling, some sitting, some standing—no one fired a shot.
Another peculiar spectacle in the history of warfare appeared tonight.
All three of them, Gao Yuan and his companions, shook their heads and sighed, speechless.
The plan required these fleeing soldiers to wreak havoc on their own defensive lines, but these men simply stopped running, unwilling to fight, insisting on surrendering.
"Do these guys think they can stick it to us? Are they counting on us not indulging in a massacre?"
Gao Yuan was angry, but Panxin said with resignation, "You’re actually not wrong. The armies that fought against us know that we treat prisoners well. People surrender as soon as they see they can’t win, without any psychological burden."
"That’s great in peacetime, but now..."
Before Gao Yuan could finish, Li Jingang whispered, "Forget it, let’s leave them be. These prisoners... they’re walking too slowly. Let’s just leave them."
Gao Yuan shook his head, then said helplessly, "Go, just go. Encountering these incompetents has really been eye-opening. Quick, honk the horn, no lights, get them to the side. Let’s move."
Li Jingang honked the horn, and the surrendering men indeed moved aside. The car drove through the midst of the heavily armed fleeing soldiers without a single one firing a shot.
