The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse -
Chapter 263 - 258: Millennium Kill
Chapter 263: Chapter 258: Millennium Kill
Panxin and Li Jingang seemed a bit confused. They exchanged glances and then said in unison, "What is the Ultimate move of War?"
Gao Yuan whispered, "Don’t understand? Hm, if I were to phrase it elegantly, it would be the ’Millennium Kill’, which is to say, stabbing them in the butt."
Panxin felt like he was on the verge of tears. Gao Yuan whispered, "The enemy has exposed their Achilles’ heel. We just need to stab it, taking out their command center and supply base directly. If that’s not a ’Millennium Kill’, what is?"
Li Jingang said morosely, "We call it a Decapitation Operation."
"Decapitation? Ah, decapitation means beheading, right? Beheading works too, but no matter how you think about it, what we’re doing isn’t exactly a Decapitation Operation. ’Millennium Kill’ seems more appropriate."
Panxin whispered, "What on earth goes through your mind?"
Gao Yuan gestured dismissively and said, "Whatever, whatever. Be it a Decapitation Operation or a Millennium Kill, it’s all the same. Let’s move."
Panxin whispered, "We could ride our motorbikes straight to the enemy’s outpost without attracting attention, then dismount and launch a surprise attack. If we want to play it safe, we should approach covertly, take out their sentries one by one, and then strike at critical locations to cause as much damage as possible."
Gao Yuan said, "Yeah, you’re right. By standard tactics, that’s indeed what we should do, but do you trust me?"
Panxin was startled and asked, "Trust you with what?"
Composed, Gao Yuan said, "I’ll go in by myself. At first, they won’t notice me. Then, I’ll start sabotaging their ammunition depot or their command center—pick a place. After I’ve turned everything upside down inside, you guys can enter and expand on the chaos."
Panxin said, "That’s too much like playing the hero. It’s too risky for you to go alone."
Yu Shunzhou whispered, "Mr. Jian, don’t say that. He’s not like us. You always judge new things with old perspectives. He is not human, so don’t treat him as one."
Gao Yuan always felt there was something awkward about Yu Shunzhou’s words, very awkward. He looked at Yu Shunzhou, who whispered, "It’s a compliment."
Having no choice but to accept Yu Shunzhou’s compliment, Gao Yuan continued, "I’ve been into Ji City several times. Believe me, zombies have a much sharper sense of hearing than humans."
After pondering for a moment, Panxin nodded and said, "Okay, Doggie’s right. Go ahead."
Why did that still sound so awkward?
Lowering his voice, Gao Yuan said, "You five hide and wait in a suitable location to begin the attack. Then... Right, should I hit the ammunition depot or the command center first?"
Panxin replied with a hint of resignation, "I guess you can’t quite discern where the command center might be, and hitting the command center first wouldn’t make enough noise anyway. Just go straight for the enemy’s ammunition depot. Once you do that, the enemy’s command center will naturally become active. Once they start reacting, we’ll find the opportunity to take out the command center."
"Alright, let’s do that."
"Wait a minute."
Li Jingang addressed Gao Yuan, "Do you know how to destroy an ammunition depot?"
Gao Yuan paused and then said, "Throw a hand grenade, I guess."
With resignation, Panxin said, "You’ve watched too many movies. An ammunition depot isn’t that easy to destroy. I’ll tell you the simplest way: if you find the ammunition depot, look for the artillery charges. Toss a hand grenade into the artillery charges, and it can detonate them. But if you throw a grenade onto unprimed shells, even a whole box of them would be useless."
Gao Yuan nodded and then suddenly said, "What do artillery charges look like?"
Alright, Gao Yuan had never actually seen what artillery charges looked like. He hadn’t come across them at the base nor at the refugee shelters, and frankly, he didn’t even know what artillery charges were. He thought artillery shells were just enlarged versions of bullets, just like in the movies.
"Come, let me explain and draw it for you," Li Jingang said.
Li Jingang drew a few lines on the ground and explained what artillery charges looked like. He then asked, "Got it? If you can’t find the artillery charges, look for gasoline. If you can’t find gasoline, look where they store light weapons. You can surely recognize hand grenades and bullets. If all else fails, just blow up anything you think can explode."
Not having timed explosives was troublesome, but that wasn’t a big problem for Gao Yuan.
"I’ve got it, let’s go!"
Brimming with fighting spirit, Gao Yuan waved his hand, and the six men abandoned their motorcycles, left the road, and descended toward the town occupied by Indian’s forces using the terrain.
The town was now essentially a large barracks. Within three hundred meters of it, the six men stopped in their tracks.
"Hm, there are sentries after all. The enemy isn’t that stupid."
At this distance, helmet-mounted night vision and thermal imaging devices could be used, but wearing Indian’s uniform could deceive the enemy. However, if they wore helmets equipped with such devices, the Indian forces controlled by the Sanitation Worker would immediately spot the anomaly.
Gao Yuan put down his helmet’s night vision. He would still wear the night vision helmet, as he didn’t rely on deception to infiltrate the enemy’s ranks.
"I’m going in first."
As he spoke, Gao Yuan set down his rifle and other items like magazines. Li Jingang asked quietly, "You’re not taking your gun?"
"No need, it’s a burden."
Gao Yuan stretched his limbs and adjusted the backpack full of hand grenades. He nodded and said, "Watch me."
Gao Yuan stood up and first surveyed the area through his night vision device.
Two hundred meters to the left was a highway, one hundred meters to the right was a river, and three hundred meters ahead, a machine gun position had completely blocked the road. Moreover, there was more than one enemy watchpost on the road; any place that allowed entry to or exit from the town had at least one platoon-sized watchpost.
The enemy wasn’t too foolish, having even removed the sentries from the rear due to the lack of threats.
Just talking about the prison guards’ defense system, the enemy’s setup was quite meticulous. However, as for its effectiveness, that remained to be seen.
The distance between the two closest watchposts was less than fifty meters, and the furthest apart was only about a hundred meters. For an ordinary person, sneaking through such small gaps would be quite impossible, but Gao Yuan was no ordinary person; this distance was enough for him.
There were no lights on the watchposts, and the town was also shrouded in darkness, with only a few places showing faint lights. It seemed the enemy hadn’t implemented a blackout policy—they simply lacked electricity.
After scoping out routes and landing spots and running them through his mind, Gao Yuan suddenly burst into action.
He moved like a breeze in the night, silent and without a trace.
Each watchpost had a machine gun as its primary weapon. Gao Yuan ran past a post less than thirty meters away and even glanced back. The sentry wasn’t asleep, just sitting there listlessly. Without night vision or light, what use were wide-open eyes?
He passed by easily, without feeling any challenge.
Gao Yuan now had the advantage of visibility. It was night for the enemy, but for Gao Yuan, it was like day.
There were people ahead, but with a light leap, Gao Yuan jumped onto a rooftop within the town.
Gao Yuan hopped back and forth across rooftops, nearly traversing the not-so-large town, yet he found no sign of an ammunition depot.
According to what Panxin and the others had said, he should look for sturdy buildings or ones heavily guarded, but these were nowhere to be seen, none at all.
There was a location that appeared to be a command center because Gao Yuan noticed it had many sentries. But according to the plan, Gao Yuan decided to locate and destroy the ammunition depot first.
If it wasn’t in the town, then he would search outside.
The artillery positions were on flat land on the riverbank, areas cleared out amongst the chaotic rocks, each section housing several cannons.
Gao Yuan observed that there was no ammo depot outside in the tent area, but near the artillery positions were piled up cannon shells and the propellant bags described by Li Jingang.
Then, at the tent guarded by sentries, Gao Yuan thought it looked like an ammo depot, but it was too small and scarce to meet the criteria for one.
So Gao Yuan finally understood.
The Sanitation Workers were just a secret organization, not an army. The soldiers brainwashed by the Sanitation Workers were too subpar; they simply hadn’t stored the ammunition separately from the cannons. The shells were piled up right next to the cannons and just covered with a shelter to protect them from wind and rain.
With no ammo depot, there was nothing significant to blow up. But Gao Yuan felt it was unacceptable to not blow up something.
Well, although all the ammo was stored at the artillery positions, and there were six such positions in total, with the most having ten cannons and the least having three.
The terrain was the limiting factor, with six artillery positions altogether, housing thirty-six 155mm cannons.
Since the shells were right beside the cannons, why not treat the artillery positions as the ammo depot to blow up?
Blow it up, he decided!
Gao Yuan quickly made up his mind, the outcome was almost the same; blow up the depot first, then hit the command center, tackling both without delay.
For others, using grenades to blow up an ammo depot could mean risking their lives, because the explosion’s power would be tremendous, potentially lethal even hundreds of meters away.
But Gao Yuan wasn’t afraid because he could throw grenades with great accuracy and from a great distance.
He took out his grenades, four in total. After pulling the pins, he threw them from about a hundred meters away.
The grenades landed near the scattered propellant bags.
The propellant was packaged, as were the shells, but under the shelter, there were at least hundreds of boxes, with some open and exposed, filled with shells and propellant.
After calmly waiting a few seconds, the delay-fuse grenades exploded, but the blast was far bigger than any grenade could produce.
A thunderous roar followed, and Gao Yuan was blinded; smoke and dust shot up into the sky. But the explosions didn’t end there. The sympathetic detonations of the shells came slightly later, igniting in the air after being launched upwards.
The effect was good. Gao Yuan immediately turned to run, and this time he didn’t dare to hesitate. After each grenade throw, he fled at top speed.
He had to run, he didn’t dare not to. The sympathetic detonations of the shells were uncomfortably close. Had Gao Yuan not taken cover behind a rock, the airburst 155mm shells would have taken him too, and those were no joke.
The best thing about throwing grenades was that they made no noise and produced no flash. Gao Yuan could throw them casually to the side, and none of the people who had started to howl and flee had any chance of spotting him.
With three artillery positions detonated in succession, the entire town plunged into chaos. Everyone except Gao Yuan. So, he kept tossing grenades steadily and swiftly.
After throwing another grenade, Gao Yuan whispered into the radio, "Mr. Jian, I’ve pierced the enemy’s... um, ’Ultimate move of War’ complete. You guys follow up and stab them, over."
