The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse
Chapter 228 - 224: Becoming the King of the Mountain

Chapter 228: Chapter 224: Becoming the King of the Mountain

Gao Yuan and Xinghe sat in the back seat of the off-road vehicle, with Panxin driving, and Li Jingang jumped into the co-driver’s seat, then they waited with the car door open until Li Yang, dragging his pack, crawled into the back seat.

As soon as the car door closed, Panxin roared the vehicle around, then sped past the truck that was still turning around.

Li Yang finally adjusted his sitting position, placing his backpack on his legs, then he let out a sigh, saying, "Why the rush?"

Panxin shouted, "Ask the captain."

Li Yang looked at Gao Yuan, saying, "Why are we going so fast?"

"Afraid there might be zombies."

Li Yang was startled for a moment, then said, "Zombies? Oh right, zombies."

Gao Yuan turned his head curiously; he hadn’t turned off his night vision goggles, so he could see the expression on Li Yang’s face that screamed how could he have forgotten something so important.

"Did you actually forget about the zombies?"

Li Yang waved his hand and patted his legs, giving a bitter laugh, "Not exactly forgotten, just didn’t come to mind for a moment."

"Isn’t that the same as forgetting?"

Li Yang gave a bitter smile, saying, "Yeah, you could say that. Mostly, it’s because habits don’t change overnight. Our main enemies are people, after all, and I’ve always been following the boss, entering the base and never going out... I just didn’t think of the zombie thing suddenly."

After speaking, Li Yang glanced outside the window and said, "They’ve caught up with us, but do we really need to go this fast? Even if there are zombies, we should be fine, right?"

Gao Yuan still curious, asked, "Why would you think that?"

"Simple, you see, the officer just now gave the order to fire, he definitely shouted to fire. If he dared to give that order, then there must not be any zombies nearby, right? Otherwise, why would he dare to fire? Isn’t he afraid of attracting zombies?"

Gao Yuan nodded, "That makes sense, but I don’t believe they have cleared all the zombies in the vicinity because they don’t have the capacity to do so. If we can’t do it, I don’t believe a country whose soldiers have started to rob people on the roads could achieve that."

Li Yang thought about it and felt that his idea wasn’t wrong, but Gao Yuan’s argument also seemed quite reasonable.

"Alas, facing such a huge upheaval unprecedented in thousands of years, a lot of experience is useless. But there shouldn’t be anything wrong, right? I think there shouldn’t be too many zombies."

After saying this, Li Yang nodded, adding, "Yeah, there should be no problem, but it’s still right to be careful."

Gao Yuan shook his head, "No, I think it’s very likely that the officer didn’t even consider that firing could attract zombies. Of course, he might have thought about firing, but didn’t expect us to launch a rocket. After all, the sound of an explosion is much louder than gunfire."

"That’s also true. But probably it’s still not a big deal."

From the front, Panxin said, "Gao Yuan, what do you think the consequences would be if they opened fire?"

Gao Yuan thought for a moment, then asked, "How far is this road from Almaty City?"

"It’s only about three to four kilometers away; I’d need to check the map to be sure."

Gao Yuan thought again and sighed, "Then the trouble is big. I estimate... at least tens of thousands of zombies."

Li Yang jumped, "That many? Could it attract that many? Shouldn’t be, right? If we analyze it like this, their defensive position is not that far from the urban area. If they could so easily attract a large number of zombies, would they dare stay there?"

Gao Yuan said in a low voice, "What if they don’t know?"

"What does that mean?" Gao Yuan said indifferently, "What if they don’t even know what will provoke the zombies, how much noise will stir them up, or, perhaps, they are completely unaware of the terror when a horde of zombies swarms in? They don’t know what the consequences are when facing an enormous number of zombies up close? Ignorance is bliss. They have no idea, and that’s why they dare."

Li Yang thought for a moment and said, "That shouldn’t be the case."

Gao Yuan replied indifferently, "I’m certain they don’t know. Otherwise, they would never dare to set up their position so close to the city. I’m also very sure that they don’t have any experience dealing with a large number of zombies up close because if they have been through what I have, they would be dead by now."

Gao Yuan spoke with such confidence, but who could refute him?

Other than Gao Yuan, who else could fight their way in and out of a horde of zombies seven times? Therefore, he was naturally the authority. If anyone wants to question Gao Yuan’s claims, at the very least, they would have had to have fought zombies.

Gao Yuan looked at his watch, then said in a deep voice, "It’s about time. How far have we run?"

"Ten kilometers."

"Stop the car. This distance should be sufficient."

Pansin slowly decelerated until the car came to a complete stop on the road, and the truck behind them also stopped.

What Gao Yuan was thinking about now was how to get through Almaty. Almaty was a transportation hub. To the south were the branches of the Tianshan Mountains, and to the north was a semi-desert terrain. If they wanted to take the road, they could only go through Almaty.

Since they would ultimately have to pass through Almaty, it made little sense to retreat any further.

Gao Yuan got out of the car and walked towards the truck behind. At this point, Zhao Qiang also jumped down from the truck and said to Gao Yuan, "Are we not moving anymore?"

"We are not moving. We’re going to gather some information here. Yu Shunzhou, Er Long, you two set up an observation post. Be careful not to let any pursuers or zombies come from behind."

It was always more reassuring to rely on one’s own people. After giving orders to Yu Shunzhou and Nie Er long, Gao Yuan turned to Zhao Qiang and said, "Have you asked along the way?"

Zhao Qiang shook his head. "Not yet. I’ll ask now. Are you sure this distance won’t be a problem?"

"Yep, no problem, unless someone intentionally lures the zombies in this direction."

Zhao Qiang turned back to the truck and called out, "Bring down the man, and everyone else, be alert and stay on guard."

The officer was pushed off the truck by Cao Zhenjiang. As soon as the officer’s feet touched the ground, Zhao Qiang grabbed his arm and said in Russian, "Answer my question now, or I will kill you on the spot."

The officer looked very frightened, which was quite natural. It would be strange if he wasn’t scared now.

Zhao Qiang questioned in Russian, and the officer replied in Russian. After a while, Zhao Qiang said to Gao Yuan, "He says that Almaty has completely fallen into chaos now. Most people have turned into zombies, and the military has suffered heavy losses. Now, Almaty is under military control, but it’s not martial law. It’s like..."

Gao Yuan murmured, "Might makes right?"

"Exactly, that’s the idea. There’s total anarchy. If you have guns, you’re the boss. They now have about three thousand soldiers in control of roughly thirty thousand people. Food is extremely scarce."

Gao Yuan looked at Zhao Qiang, who stopped talking, so Gao Yuan said, "Is that all?"

"Yeah, that’s all. I’ll keep asking."

Gao Yuan thought for a moment and then said, "Ask him where their main force is located and if we can go around them."
