Chapter 226: Chapter 222 Roadblock

When morning came the next day, some even had no idea what had happened the night before.

Cao Zhenjiang cooked a simple meal for the first time with the materials brought, and after eating self-heating rations and compressed biscuits for so many days, everyone had a proper hot meal for the first time.

These days, Gao Yuan ate very little, just enough to maintain basic consumption, but since there was cooking to be done, he ate his fill seriously.

Moving forward wouldn’t be as easy.

It wasn’t to say they had to fight all the way to Africa, but there were bound to be all sorts of obstacles ahead, and they would likely have to fight their way through. In a world that had completely lost order, hoping to pass through safely based on a mere paper agreement between humans was nothing but wishful thinking.

Now that even humanity could not be preserved, there was no point in talking about agreements and alliances.

"Hang up the national flag to make it more visible. Our relations with the Central Asian Five Nations are all decent. Hanging the national flag should help," Zhao Qiang suggested, but his suggestion was essentially a decision.

Gao Yuan didn’t want to vie for the right to speak because, in his view, that was foolish. In this team, he was only slightly better than Yu Shunzhou and Nie Erlong.

When fighting zombies, Gao Yuan was an authority, but when it came to fighting people, he fell quite short.

As they set off once again, Gao Yuan took his usual seat on the truck.

Unable to sleep and having no business to attend to, chatting seemed to be the only activity left. If he felt tired, he would try to sleep; if not, he’d just hold out and wait—what else could he do?

Without satellite navigation, they could only rely on maps and road signs to drive the car, but Kazakhstan was sparsely populated, and the advantage of sparsity was fewer zombies.

Gao Yuan preferred the roads in uninhabited areas the most, relaxed and comfortable.

Aside from stopping for fuel and bathroom breaks, the vehicle never stopped. Even when encountering small groups of zombies, there was no need to halt; they would just plow right through.

That was until the truck suddenly hit the brakes hard, jolting Gao Yuan awake from his drowsy state.

"There’s a roadblock ahead!"

Someone shouted from outside the canopy, and just as Gao Yuan was about to get out and take a look, Li Jingang yelled from outside, "We’re not checking the roadblock, just go around it from the side, and the vehicles behind, stay alert."

Not daring to always use the walkie-talkies, even communication was a problem; they had to rely on shouting.

The few people in the rear vehicle gathered up the curtains at the back of the canopy, and the small holes open on the sides of the canvas were also unsealed, facilitating observation to the sides and also making it easier to shoot.

Of course, the truck’s canvas provided no protection whatsoever; if a fight actually broke out, people would still need to get out of the vehicle.

The two vehicles drove off the highway, and long before they reached the roadblock formed by two trucks, they went around it from a distance.

No matter who set up the roadblock or even if it was man-made, if it could be avoided, then it was best to avoid contact with others.

It wasn’t especially thrilling or exciting, just a small obstacle on the road that was left behind as they moved on.

The route was all through dry semi-desert areas with no sight of farmlands or villages, certainly no large-scale human settlements, so even if there were robbers on the road, their numbers couldn’t be too many.

Gao Yuan and his team now faced the situation where they had encountered places with large gatherings of people, indicating that their supplies were too scarce to be worth looting, and when they came across smaller groups, whether they were bandits or not, the sight of their well-equipped small unit discouraged any provocations.

Therefore, the biggest test ahead lay in Almaty.

Almaty, once the capital of Kazakhstan, had shifted its capital, but it remained the largest city in Kazakhstan. This meant that Almaty was inevitably filled with a large number of zombies, and there were certainly survivors around Almaty.

If it weren’t for the fact that Almaty was an unavoidable thoroughfare, Gao Yuan and his team wouldn’t have headed there intentionally.

Apart from one roadblock they encountered along the way without seeing anyone, there were no more unexpected incidents, not even minor ones.

By now, they had crossed several time zones, and in Ji City time, when it was midnight, the sky finally began to darken, and at this moment, rural areas started to become more frequent along the road, with farmland and orchards being commonplace, all indicating their imminent arrival at Almaty.

Indeed, in a desolate place with no one around, the convoy stopped once again, taking the opportunity to refuel, eat, and drink, getting ready to pass through the Almaty area in one go by night.

When they set off again, it was completely dark. Without turning on the headlights and relying solely on the vision provided by night vision devices, they made the utmost effort to remain undetected by people or zombies.

Passing through a high-risk area certainly caused tension to rise.

Suddenly, three thumping sounds were heard, and Gao Yuan instinctively said, "Something’s up."

As expected, the truck came to an abrupt halt, and then someone shouted from ahead, "Get out! Get out! Stay alert and find cover!"

The people in the truck leaped out swiftly and quickly sought out hiding places around the vehicle.

Gao Yuan jumped down from the truck; he didn’t take a gun but instead grabbed his helmet in one hand and a large pack of grenades in the other.

While others’ main weapons were guns, Gao Yuan’s primary weapon was grenades.

The truck stayed on the road, showing no intention of leaving the highway. Gao Yuan put his helmet on, flipped down the night vision goggles in front of his eyes, and walked a few steps forward.

Zhao Qiang was already coming to meet him, saying urgently, "We can’t get through ahead, turn on the vehicle lights! Then, everyone off and take cover!"

After shouting, Zhao Qiang turned to Gao Yuan and said, "There’s a checkpoint ahead; we won’t be able to get through easily. I’m going to negotiate."

Gao Yuan looked forward, but the distance was too great to see with his head-mounted low-light night vision goggles, so he asked in a low voice, "What’s happening?"

"The vehicle-mounted thermal imaging detected multiple heat sources, at least twenty people, about a kilometer away, with two machine gun positions. It doesn’t look like something bandits could muster. Instead of being covert, it’s better to reveal ourselves and negotiate. I think there’s a good chance it’s the military."

Zhao Qiang briefly outlined the situation, then said with a somber expression, "I’ll go negotiate; you guys hide for now and protect Xinghe."

Gao Yuan nodded his head, but at that moment, he saw several lights illuminate on the opposite side.

Zhao Qiang let out a sigh of relief and said, "They’ve spotted us. Since they’ve turned on their lights voluntarily, they should come over to negotiate."

After pondering for a moment, Gao Yuan said in a low voice, "Arrange for people to hide on both flanks, in case the other side has ill intentions. Better to be cautious."

Zhao Qiang immediately nodded and said, "Of course."

Gao Yuan shouted loudly, "Turn on the radio. Li Yang, you and Xinghe come to me. Leave a driver in each vehicle, and everyone else disperse and stay observant."
