Chapter 207: Chapter 204: Impenetrable as a Fortress
The electromagnetic storm attack had commenced, but the operation personnel at the command center did not fall into panic; they continued to carry out their duties in an orderly fashion.
Long-range communication had been disrupted, so they sought ways to restore it, with signalmen checking for damage to the antennas.
A metal cabinet was opened, and a shortwave radio used at the platoon level was placed on the table; then it was connected to the outdoor antenna, powered up and tested.
"Hello, hello, this is the command center, do you copy?"
The signalman shouted loudly while the commander stared at the darkened monitor. After a moment, he turned to Liu Muyang and said, "Let’s go, command outside. Signalman, grab another radio and come with me."
The commander swiftly made his way outside, followed by a group of officers, and then they quickly walked up a nearby hill.
The terrain of Guisui Institution No.1 was uneven to begin with, flanked by hills on both sides. Although not the main peak of Daqing Mountain, the height and steepness provided good shelter.
Having lost the battlefield monitoring system, they sought a higher vantage point for a better view.
Gao Yuan was somewhat nervous because he knew the real test hadn’t yet come, as the Serpent People had not yet dropped Armored Beasts into the camp.
If the Serpent People’s attack methods remained unchanged, they would air-drop Armored Beasts directly into the shelter’s camp after the zombies had arrived, coordinating an inside-outside attack for central penetration.
But now the zombies were being delayed by the minefields scattered throughout the valley and might actually be annihilated halfway through the valley. Indeed, regardless of whether there were hundreds of thousands or millions of zombies, if things went optimally, it was possible to eliminate all the zombies in Guisui City en route.
For the same yield of aerial bomb, killing a few thousand humans would count as a superlative battle achievement, because humans would hide, evacuate, take cover, and conceal themselves before the battle rather than rushing in extremely dense formations towards the bombs.
But the question was whether the aerial bombs laid on the road would detonate as planned.
The commander hurried ahead, and Liu Muyang couldn’t help asking, "Are there personnel assigned specifically for manually detonating those aerial bombs?"
"Yes, a two-person team is responsible for detonating each large bomb, and someone is in charge of pulling the cord for the smaller ones. As long as the bombs are not defective, they will definitely explode!"
The commander’s answer was filled with confidence. He stopped, raised his binoculars to scan the sky, then said to Liu Muyang, "I don’t see any alien ships."
Gao Yuan swallowed hard and said, "At high altitudes, they might be invisible to the naked eye, but alien ships move extremely fast; we can’t afford to be complacent just because we can’t see them."
"Understood."
After speaking, the commander pointed to the mountaintops on either side and slowly said with confidence, "After receiving the battle updates from Shimen Shelter No.2, we changed our artillery deployment. The anti-aircraft guns and machine cannons originally placed in the camp were moved to both mountaintops; we also set up a lot of rocket launchers, specifically to deal with Armored Beasts. My camp is tightly secured on the outside while more relaxed inside; we’re not worried about Armored Beasts causing destruction within."
No sooner had the commander finished speaking than another thunderous explosion resounded, and the rising dust was clearly visible from the camp.
"Another large bomb successfully detonated; the forward combat teams know exactly when to set off the bombs."
Then, the commander pointed to the mountainsides and said, "We simply didn’t have enough time. We started to tunnel into the mountainsides, with the idea that if we encountered an alien attack, all non-combat personnel and reserves would enter the tunnels on both sides, thus avoiding friendly fire. But we didn’t have enough time to finish."
Looking down from a slightly higher position, the camp was divided into sections where personnel congregated together, with large open spaces in between. Whether it was the people from Guisui Shelter or the newly arrived Expeditionary Army, no one could move around at will.
Those open spaces were reserved for the anti-aircraft guns to fire, and the clustered personnel would have to rely on rocket launchers to deal with the Armored Beasts.
Guisui Institution No.1, drawing lessons from the experience of Stonegate Shelter, adapted its firepower deployment to suit its own situation.
Liu Muyang glanced around and said in a low voice, "Collateral damage is almost inevitable."
The commanding officer nodded solemnly, "Yes, given the current situation, collateral damage cannot be completely avoided, but we can’t all huddle in the camp and get wiped out by the aliens in one fell swoop."
The anti-aircraft and machine guns were deployed on the high ground on both sides; firing into the center where many people were gathered in the camp could cause casualties even with a single ricochet, and that was absolutely unavoidable. Therefore, to minimize collateral damage as much as possible, many people could only stay indoors to prevent injuries from ricochets.
There was no choice. The Serpent People didn’t give any time, and if the personnel in the camp were completely evacuated, that would be a real disaster.
After weighing the risk against the reward, Liu Muyang sighed softly and asked quietly, "What equipment is available for the forces on both sides?"
"Dual 23-mm Anti-Aircraft Guns at forty stations, dual 35-mm Anti-Aircraft Cannons at seventy-two stations, all gun placements have been modified to fire at negative angles, on the north side there are eight Type 95 quad 25-mm self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, and at the southern entrance there are twelve Type 09 twin self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, all directed inwards and ready to provide mobile support at any time."
Liu Muyang asked in a low voice, "After the magnetic storm just now, can the self-propelled anti-aircraft guns still be started?"
"I don’t know. The report should be coming in soon..."
An explosion interrupted the commander’s words with a bang. After the explosion subsided, the commander continued, "We should get the damage report shortly. These are nuclear, biological, and chemical defense weapons systems, so there shouldn’t be a problem."
Indeed, a messenger ran over quickly, saluted, and reported loudly, "Report! Armored vehicle testing is complete, everything’s normal!"
The commander waved his hand and then said quietly to Liu Muyang, "With these armored vehicles ready to provide mobile support at any moment, I feel much more relieved."
Just then, the sound of explosions suddenly intensified, becoming so loud that conversations could no longer be heard.
No one talked anymore; they just listened to the intense and continuous explosions.
About five minutes later, the explosions suddenly ceased. The battlefield that had been thunderous with noise became eerily silent.
Gao Yuan, who had been looking up at the sky, suddenly pointed and said, "Look! The ships!"
Two black dots were descending rapidly, and a messenger ran over quickly, urgently reporting, "Report! The preset minefield has inflicted heavy casualties on the zombies! The frontline reports that there are over ten thousand remaining zombies, the exact number is unestimatable but definitely under fifty thousand, with no further zombies observed yet."
The commander shouted, "Launch the signal flares! Inform the artillery for fire coverage! Don’t let a single zombie through! Prepare to intercept the Armored Beasts!"
Three red signal flares fluttered up into the sky; after a moment, Gao Yuan saw three more red flares rise from a distant hilltop.
Signal flare relays, an old but effective method.
Then, three green signal flares flew up above the camp.
The commander gestured and said to Liu Muyang, "You head to the shelter in the cave for the time being; we’re about to engage the Armored Beasts!"
