Chapter 99: Foundations and Shadows

The first morning in the Constellation Vanguard’s sanctum dawned with radiant sunlight cascading through floating crystal windows. Suspended in the Upper Realm’s skies, their new sect hall hovered atop a majestic island wreathed in clouds and lit by twin suns. Verdant forests stretched behind the halls, while ethereal stone bridges arched out to meditation spires and training grounds—a gift from the Celestial Sky Sect that symbolized unity and growth.

Chen Yu stood at the edge of the central courtyard, arms folded, silently surveying their domain. Beneath the beauty, he sensed fragility. Recognition by the heavens had been earned—but with that came expectations, and in the Upper Realm, where power is survival, enemies lurked just beyond sight.

Footsteps echoed behind him. Roman, clad in white-gold armor inscribed with divine runes, approached quietly.

"All structures are stable. Defensive wards are active. But..." Roman trailed off.

"You feel it too," Chen Yu said without turning.

Roman nodded solemnly. "We’re being watched."

Above the clouds, divine beasts circled, their silvery forms just detectable. A faint flicker of shadow near the boundary suggested rival scouts—swift, silent, but warned off by Hui’s aura. The message was unmistakable.

A test.

Gathered for Purpose

The great hall of starlight awaited them next—a vast circular chamber, its ceiling alive with shifting constellations and celestial maps. Around a glowing star-map table sat the Vanguard’s core:

Hui’er, the Demon Princess, arms folded, eyeliner sharp as obsidian.

Roman, silent sentinel, eyes always moving, ever watchful.

Lei Meiyun, regal and steady in deep crimson robes.

Bai Ruxue, fiery-eyed, her hair aflame with quiet power.

Gu Chaewon, the cool-headed holy priestess, her mien serene.

Vornark, prideful Beast King’s son, alert and strong.

Nyzelia, the dark-elf strategist, blade in hand, expression unreadable.

Ling Ling, robed necromancer, purple aura flickering at her fingertips.

Azrael, shadowed figure, presence quiet, cloak swirling with unseen power.

Nine supreme forces in a sect born of chaos and unity. Their task: forge a sect worthy of the Upper Realm.

Chen Yu placed both hands on the table, eyes sweeping each face. "The heavens have acknowledged us—but that’s only the start. We stand atop shifting power. To survive, we must be more than individuals; we must be a fortress united."

He assigned roles with clipped precision:

Meiyun & Ruxue: coordinate zone defenses, master drills, oversee training circles.

Vornark: rally beast allies, form scout and guard contingents.

Hui, Roman, Azrael: train recruits in martial and spiritual arts—quantity with quality.

Gu Chaewon: construct healing infrastructure and recovery support.

Nyzelia: gather intelligence from across Realms—potential threats or allies.

Each nodded, ready to act.

Ling Ling’s hand rose quietly. "Someone’s already crossed our boundary."

A chill passed. Chen’s jaw set.

A Stranger at the Gates

Moments later, at the sanctum gates, Chen Yu, Hui, Azrael, and Ling Ling faced the newcomer: a serene figure in white feathers and gold chains. Their face was obscured—benevolent, ancient.

"I come from the Council of Bound Stars," they announced. "Name’s Kaelith."

Chen frowned. "Council of...?"

Kaelith inclined their head. "We’re not a sect. We guard the cosmic balance. We’ve watched you all—from the tripartite fusion onward."

Hui’s eyes narrowed. "State your purpose—or step aside."

Kaelith unfurled a scroll sealed in starlight. "A message from above." He tossed it to Chen.

Upon catching it, Chen scanned the glyph-script. His gaze darkened.

"What’s it say?" Meiyun demanded, appearing behind.

"A covenant—and a challenge." Chen’s voice was low. "Five days to complete the Heavenly Collision—a trial by combat against another Upper Realm sect. Survival... or erasure."

Hui bit back a curse. Kaelith’s eyes gleamed. "Your opponents won’t hold back. The stars demanded balance."

With that, Kaelith vanished.

War Council

In the war room, star-lit maps and rainbow-hued glyphs lined every wall. Chen Yu honed in on the mission: they’d face Twilight Reign, a sect steeped in shadow magic and spiritual flim-flam, operating invisibly across Realms.

Azrael’s eyes sharpened. "They steal awakenings. Beware—they corrupt beasts and even talent itself."

Gu Chaewon asked softly, "Time?"

"Five days," Chen answered. "Enough time for training and strategic structure."

Meiyun stood, confidence in her posture. "We’ll make every second count."

Vornark cracked his knuckles. "Let them approach. I’m ready to rip them apart."

As they finalized plans, the tension felt electric—the before-storm hush of conflict.

Twilight Reign’s Watch

Across the realm, in a mountain chasm filled with perpetual night, hooded figures gathered around a four-eyed leader, face sullen in candlelight.

"An unusual opponent arises," Number 10 said, voice thin and bored.

Number 4 sneered. "Send assassins. Earthlings are easy prey."

"Silence," the central figure’s voice boomed. "They’re protected by cosmic will...and the heavens watch."

The leader’s cloaked form slammed their fist on the map table. "We wait—see how they fight. Keep our eyes on the Tower. If they falter, we strike."

Final Preparations

Chen Yu sat atop the highest spire that night. Hui appeared silently at his side.

"Already enemies," she said softly.

"It always was," he replied.

Hui hesitated. "We’ll win."

He didn’t smile—but nodded. "We must."

Below, the lantern light of their sanctum glowed like promise in the night. Peace: earned. But war: inevitable.

Training Montage & Growth

Over the next two days, the Vanguard prepared with single-minded intensity:

Meiyun led shield formations under storm-hued skies—the air crackling, echoing keepers from Celestial Sky Sect. Her tigers roared in unity.

Ruxue mastered flame-shield weave, forging protective rings of fire that dazzled her team.

Vornark tamed beasts in long formations—phoenix beasts, ridge-back tigers obeying his commands.

Roman drilled recruits with sacred blade discipline—thrusts, parries, stance shifts nailed to divine rhythm.

Hui’s team, including Azrael, practiced harmonized spirit-fire combos—dark vs holy, shadow and light intertwined.

Gu Chaewon healed wounds even wrought by heavenly lightning, reinforcing magical wards in case of injury.

Nyzelia hunted trails in spycraft, retrieving intel from realms beyond.

Chen Yu personally trained with new disciples and veterans alike—his calm command bringing out their best. He also encouraged focus on contract rites—as he held contracts with three Reths, he insisted each member form a single Reth contract:

Ling Ling aligned with the Reth of Decay—her necromancy amplified.

Gu Chaewon synchronized with the Reth of Peace—her healing reaching near-miraculous levels.

Roman chose the Reth of Valor—unlocking divine defense and radiant smites.

They harnessed each contract through ritual daggers pricked at night, runic circles, and whispered combinations of hope, will, and despair. Their energies rebalanced by morning, shimmering on their auras.

When Chen checked their stats after days of intense training, figures glowed:

Chen Yu: Rank RR• Strength: 810 / Agility: 825 / Stamina: 830 / Mana: 845 / Charm: 950 / Energy: 1,500

Hui’er: Rank R• Strength: 790 / Agility: 780 / Stamina: 800 / Mana: 830 / Charm: 10/10 / Energy: 1,300

Demon King (Hui’s father): Rank RR• Strength: 815 / Agility: 820 / Stamina: 830 / Mana: 845 / Energy: 1,600

Nyzelia: Rank R• Estimated Strength: 770 / Agility: 780 / Stamina: 790 / Mana: 800 / Energy: 1,200

Meiyun, Ruxue, Roman, Vornark, Ling Ling, Azrael, Gu Chaewon: Rank R, stats hovering similarly in 760–795 range, energy between 1,100–1,400 each.

By day ten, their growth was undeniable. Contracts bonded. Bonds forged.

Entering the Anomaly Zone

On the tenth evening, Chen gathered everyone at the courtyard. Their silhouettes etched against twin-sun twilight.

"One more barrier," he said. "Same time flow—one day here, three months in the Lower Realm. We have all we need, but the real test is ahead."

His team nodded, hushed anticipation on their faces.

"I’m heading into Anomaly Zone 2. I’ll go alone—streamline my mind, push my limits. The rest of you: Zone 1, major sweep and mastery. Five days there, then we reconvene."

Hui touched his arm. "Be careful."

He smiled. "You too. I’ll open the gate."

With their allies grouped, Chen spoke a final incantation, his Chaos-infused aura flaring. The barrier shimmered and cracked, twin suns’ light splitting into red-and-blue ripples. He stepped through.

Storm at Zone 2’s Summit

The screen fades to black just as an obsidian-scaled behemoth with six burning crimson eyes roars and lands a crushing blow upon Chen Yu, hurling him through shattered trees.

The world blurs. Pain surges—but before unconsciousness, Chen’s voice echoes:

"So this is Anomaly Zone 2..."

And then—nothing.
