Chapter 86: 86. Qinglan’s strength is a mystery.

After breakfast, no one went out today; everyone stayed in the dormitory to prepare for the defense next Monday.

Shen Qinglan was the most relaxed one among them. She moved a chair to sit in the sun, holding a book in her hands, flipping through it casually.

"Qinglan, do you realize you’re asking for enmity?" Yu Xiaoxuan said jealously, her hands still tapping away on the keyboard; she had only started on her paper today.

"Who told you to be lazy earlier on? Now you’re anxious, aren’t you?" Fang Tong teased leisurely.

"And how are you any better? Aren’t you rushing your paper now too? Let’s not ridicule each other when we’re in the same boat," retorted Yu Xiaoxuan.

Fang Tong stopped talking.

Wu Qian had been silent all along, her mind seemingly elsewhere, occasionally glancing at her phone even though it had been turned off the whole time. No one understood the source of the perplexity on her face.

After hesitating for a long time, Wu Qian finally reached for her phone and pressed the power button.

She had set up call alerts, so as soon as the phone was turned on, several messages came through—all from Chen Qingtian.

Wu Qian read each message, which were mostly him asking why she had left the hospital without a word, whether she felt any better, and where she was now.

Wu Qian’s vision blurred as she looked at the screen. She blinked lightly and sent a reply.

[At school, all is well.]

Not long after, her phone rang, but Wu Qian didn’t answer.

The phone continued to ring, and Yu Xiaoxuan looked at her curiously, "Wu Qian, answer your phone."

Wu Qian didn’t respond and instead picked up her phone and walked out of the dormitory.

"Wu Qian seems a bit off today," said Yu Xiaoxuan.

"Maybe something happened to her. If she doesn’t want to tell us, let’s not pry. Just focus on your paper," Fang Tong advised.

Yu Xiaoxuan didn’t say any more.

Shen Qinglan sat on the balcony, where she could perfectly see the scene downstairs. She saw Wu Qian leave the dormitory building and head to a big tree next to it, where a man was waiting—it seemed Wu Qian had gone to meet this man.

Shen Qinglan had seen this man before; it was the same man she and Fu Hengyi had run into twice while shopping. Their behavior was very intimate then, and it seemed clear now that Wu Qian’s depressed mood these past few days had to do with this man.

Shen Qinglan couldn’t hear what the man said, but Wu Qian kept her head down, and the man held Wu Qian in his arms. Wu Qian’s hands were beating on the man’s back, but Shen Qinglan knew from the strength of the blows they couldn’t have been very hard.

Soon, Wu Qian and the man got into a sports car parked nearby.

Shen Qinglan blinked her beautiful eyes and withdrew her gaze.

"Qinglan, what should we eat for lunch?" Yu Xiaoxuan stretched lazily and asked Shen Qinglan on the balcony.

Shen Qinglan replied, "What do you feel like eating? I’ll go buy it." She had the most time among everyone in the dorm now.

Yu Xiaoxuan’s eyes sparkled; she was a foodie, and the mention of food filled her with energy. "I want Pizza Hut’s seafood pizza, and pasta, Kentucky Fried Chicken’s spicy wings and New Orleans grilled wings, Starbucks’ latte, and..."

"Yu Xiaoxuan, are you a pig?" Fang Tong interrupted Yu Xiaoxuan, looking at her with disdain. "Even though you’re not famous now, you’re still an artist. Pay attention to your image. If you keep eating like this, aren’t you afraid your agent will tear you limb from limb?"

Yu Xiaoxuan’s face fell. "But the agent isn’t here now, just let me eat one last time."

Her pitiful expression, coupled with her woeful tone, made Yu Xiaoxuan look like a forlorn child who had been abandoned.

Unfortunately for her, Fang Tong wasn’t buying it. She rolled her eyes and said, "That trick won’t work on me. I’m doing this for your own good. Eat less now and you won’t have to suffer so much when dieting later."

"Qinglan..." Yu Xiaoxuan turned to look at Shen Qinglan.

Shen Qinglan closed the book and said, "Fang Tong is right. I’ve heard that Linda has very high standards for artists, and the first requirement is to control your figure. If you want to survive under Linda’s management, it’s better not to eat this junk food."

Before Han Yi placed Yu Xiaoxuan under Linda’s management, he sought Shen Qinglan’s opinion. She had done her homework on Linda.

Yu Xiaoxuan fell silent, her face the picture of despair.

In the end, it was Shen Qinglan who ordered the food online, and while she didn’t order any of the dishes Yu Xiaoxuan had wanted, she did choose a serving of her favorite sweet and sour pork loin as a concession to her brittle little heart.

Yu Xiaoxuan was so moved by the sight of the sweet and sour pork loin that she almost cried.

"Qinglan, I knew you loved me the most. If only I were a man in this life, I would definitely marry you, with an eight-bearer palanquin and wedding procession that stretches for miles."

Shen Qinglan smiled without a word, thinking to herself that even if you were a man in this life, you’d still be a step too late.

And that was Shen Qinglan’s calm thought.

After the meal, Shen Qinglan took care of the cleanup while the other two continued to battle with their keyboards, hoping to get their thesis finished today since it was almost Saturday and they had agreed to visit Qinglan’s home tomorrow.

"Qinglan, you didn’t actually go on professional internship, but your report looks so real. How did you manage that?" Yu Xiaoxuan flipped through Shen Qinglan’s report, feeling as if her soul had suffered ten thousand points of damage.

Fang Tong, long accustomed to Shen Qinglan’s talents, responded nonchalantly, "Qinglan’s abilities are a mystery; an internship report is nothing. Have you forgotten in sophomore year when she helped a senior from the physics department solve a difficult problem? That guy worshiped her as a goddess and chased her for an entire academic year, bringing her breakfast every term, and no matter what Qinglan said, it was to no avail."

Yu Xiaoxuan also remembered that incident and laughed. That silly senior often came to school even after graduation.

"Qinglan, what did you say to that senior in the end? Why did he stop coming afterward?" Yu Xiaoxuan was curious.

Shen Qinglan spoke indifferently, "Nothing much. I just told him I was engaged and that I would marry my fiancé after graduation, and that my fiancé and I were very close, so I hoped he wouldn’t disturb my life."

Nothing much... Yu Xiaoxuan raised her thumb in admiration. "How could you come up with that? Why didn’t you say that sooner?"

"That poor guy, a simple young man, finally falls for a girl, only to find out she’s taken. That’s quite a blow. Qinglan didn’t say it sooner because she was afraid he couldn’t handle it. After graduating and experiencing life in society, he should have grown stronger," Fang Tong said casually.

Yu Xiaoxuan looked at Shen Qinglan, and seeing that she didn’t object, she knew Fang Tong was right and silently mourned for that guy for a second.

But what Shen Qinglan was thinking at the moment was that what she had said wasn’t really a lie; she was indeed married now.
