Chapter 68: 68. A Deep Bond between Mother and Daughter (Third Watch, PK for Subscriptions)

That night, Shen Qinglan didn’t finish her dinner at the Shen family’s home and left with Fu Hengyi using a pretext.

"What did dad say to make you so unhappy?" Fu Hengyi asked gently.

Shen Qinglan turned her head to glance at him, "Is it that obvious?"

Fu Hengyi shook his head and remained silent. It wasn’t obvious; in fact, without careful observation, one wouldn’t notice at all, but Fu Hengyi still noticed right away.

"Didn’t eat dinner, shall I cook for you when we get home?" Fu Hengyi suggested, cleverly changing the subject.

Shen Qinglan shook her head and glanced at his chest, "Let’s just eat out, I don’t want to fuss about it."

Fu Hengyi didn’t oppose her suggestion, and they found a nearby restaurant where they ate casually before heading home.

Shen Qinglan didn’t reveal the content of her conversation with Shen Qian, and Fu Hengyi didn’t inquire further.

The next day, Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi, unusually donned in formal attire, Shen Qinglan in a light blue evening gown, enhancing her chilly demeanor, and Fu Hengyi in a black suit paired with a sapphire blue tie.

This was the first time Shen Qinglan saw Fu Hengyi in formal attire, unlike casual attire, he now looked more like a noble young master from a comic book, her cool eyes gleamed momentarily.

The concert was held at a renowned music hall in Beijing, and by the time they arrived, the venue had already filled with quite a few people. Shen Xitong wasn’t to be seen, presumably still preparing backstage. Chu Yunrong was also dressed up for the occasion and was chatting with a few distinguished ladies.

Shen Qinglan had never been to such an occasion and didn’t know these people, but from their attire, it was evident that they were from rich or noble families.

Everyone had already taken their seats, and Shen Qinglan casually glanced around and saw several acquaintances, primarily relatives from Chu Yunrong’s family, the Chu family. Her maternal grandparents, her aunt Chu Yunjin, and her uncle Pei Zhen were present, but she did not see her cousin Pei Yinong.

Fu Hengyi had evidently noticed people from the Chu family too, and he walked with Shen Qinglan toward their seats, which were next to the Shen family’s.

"Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt, Uncle," Shen Qinglan began greeting, with Fu Hengyi following suit.

Chu Zhan, the head of the Chu family, saw Shen Qinglan, smiled and nodded, his eyes then moved to Fu Hengyi. He showed no surprise by the way he addressed him, obviously already aware of their marriage.

After all, they had also attended Granny Shen’s funeral.

"Lanlan, come here and let Grandma have a look at you," Qi Min, Shen Qinglan’s grandmother, waved her over. Shen Qinglan walked up and crouched in front of her to let the elder see her more clearly.

"You’ve lost weight again, haven’t you been eating well?"

Shen Qinglan slightly curled her lips, "That’s just your worried misunderstanding, Grandma. I even noticed yesterday when changing that I’ve put on weight around my waist."

Fu Hengyi stood aside, watching Shen Qinglan chat patiently with Qi Min. He noticed that although Shen Qinglan was usually cold, she was especially patient with the elderly and got along well with any elder in the family.

The Pei family, being business-oriented for generations, had no dealings with the Fu family, and Pei Zhen didn’t know Fu Hengyi. Since he wasn’t the type to warm up easily, after initially responding, he kept quiet.

Fu Hengyi stood there feeling somewhat bored while the gazes of others fell on him, either intentionally or unintentionally recognizing his identity, curious about his presence there but even more curious about the girl who came with him.

They had not forgotten that when Fu Hengyi had come in earlier, that girl had been holding his hand intimately, and after entering, she went straight to the Chu family’s seats. Could she be a relative of the Chu family?

Everyone was guessing Shen Qinglan’s identity.

Shen Qinglan seemed unaware of the scrutinizing gazes on her as she chatted with the Chu family for a while before returning to her own seat.

Their seats were in the first row, other than a few elders’ seats, their seats had the best view, allowing them to see every move on the stage clearly.

The lights dimmed, the curtain on the stage opened, and in the center was a black piano. Although Shen Qinglan was not familiar with the brand of piano, she could tell that this piano was very valuable.

Suddenly, a spotlight shone in the corner of the stage, and only then did Shen Qinglan see Shen Xitong standing there in a white evening gown, her hair done up in a bun with only two small strands left hanging at the sides, wearing a sparkling princess tiara, looking every bit the noble princess.

She walked slowly to the center of the stage, her gaze falling below the stage, and Shen Qinglan distinctly felt her gaze linger on her own figure for a few seconds.

"Thank you all so much for taking time out of your busy schedules to attend my personal concert tonight. I hope to bring everyone a pleasant evening."

Shen Xitong bowed slightly, elegantly performing a curtsy, and then walked to the piano to sit down.

Sitting to Shen Qinglan’s left was Chu Yunrong, and on her right was Fu Hengyi, with Shen Junyu sitting next to Fu Hengyi.

The beautiful piano music began, Shen Xitong’s slender, graceful fingers flying over the piano keys, as a stream of fluent notes whirled through the concert hall.

Shen Qinglan admitted that Shen Xitong played the piano very well; she even heard a few professionals sitting behind her quietly praising Shen Xitong.

Chu Yunrong had a full smile on her face, her eyes focused on the girl on the stage, pride filling her eyes—this was the child she had personally trained.

Shen Qinglan’s expression remained calm, listening quietly, occasionally glancing over at Fu Hengyi, only to see that his gaze was not on the stage but was lowered, seemingly lost in thought.

A hint of a smile touched the corners of Shen Qinglan’s eyes; she was sure that Fu Hengyi was definitely distracted.

At the end of the concert, a wave of applause like the tide erupted, Shen Xitong stood in the center of the stage, and bowed three times to the audience.

"Thank you, everyone, thank you. Here, I would also like to thank someone." Her gaze shifted to the audience, "Without her, I wouldn’t be able to stand here today, talking about my beloved piano. This person is my mother."

The spotlight timely shone on Chu Yunrong, her face a mix of surprise and emotion, she walked onto the stage, going up to Shen Xitong, grasping Shen Xitong’s hands, the mother and daughter gazed at each other emotionally, tears glistening in their eyes.

"I also thank the heavens for giving me such an excellent daughter. She is my treasure."

Shen Xitong, moved, embraced Chu Yunrong, her voice choked, "Thank you to my dear mother, I love you, Mom."

"I love you too, my baby."

The mother and daughter emotionally embracing on stage were the envy of all the guests present.

Shen Qinglan quietly watched this scene unfold on stage, her gaze on Shen Xitong was cold. Shen Xitong, was this your tactic?
