The Tycoon's Mysterious Darling Wife -
Chapter 386 - 388. The Final Chapter of the Wedding
Chapter 386: 388. The Final Chapter of the Wedding
If Shen Junyu really ran off with someone, she would definitely clap her hands in delight—it would be utterly satisfying. She was all too eager to witness Wen Xiyao’s embarrassment.
It was apparent to Du Honghai what his wife was thinking, and he felt quite helpless about it. "Keep it down," he said. The schadenfreude shouldn’t be too obvious.
Mrs. Du snorted and muttered under her breath, "It’s not related to me; I’m just here to watch the drama. If the groom runs away during the wedding, the Wen Family’s face would be completely lost. She’d like to see if the Wen Family still has the face to strut around after this, with Wen Xiyao being such a great bride, abandoned at her own wedding."
Therefore, without even knowing the full story, Mrs. Du had already imagined a whole drama unfolding.
The other guests also slowly realized that something was amiss, as the MC on stage had been speaking for far too long. Everyone whispered and speculated about what could have happened.
Mrs. Wen and Wen Bingchuan exchanged glances and simultaneously looked towards Shen Qian and Chu Yunrong; both were equally puzzled, clearly also in the dark about the situation. Fu Hengyi sent a message to Shen Qinglan but got no response.
At that moment, the noise outside grew louder, even the sound of police sirens could be heard. Guests sitting close to the entrance grew restless and began to peer outside, only to hear people saying that someone was threatening to jump off a building, something about a bride.
Mrs. Du, who overheard indistinctly, made an instinctive connection to Wen Xiyao at the mention of a bride and whispered to Du Honghai, "Could it be that Shen Junyu ran away and Wen Xiyao is so distraught she wants to jump off a building?"
Du Honghai glared fiercely at his wife, "What nonsense are you spouting? If you’re bored, drink some water," he said, placing a cup of water in front of her.
Mrs. Du pursed her lips, considering the possibility. If she were Wen Xiyao and someone publicly jilted her at the altar, she certainly wouldn’t be able to go on living. It would be better to just die than to become the subject of everyone’s gossip over teatime.
The noise from outside continued to escalate to the point where even the two elderly gentlemen became restless. Wen Sihan stood up, excused himself to the families’ elders, and went out to see what was happening.
No sooner had he stepped out than he saw the police setting up an air cushion. "What’s happened here?" Wen Sihan asked someone in the crowd.
"Someone’s threatening to jump off the building, a man is holding a bride and threatening to jump," the bystander informed him.
Wen Sihan’s expression shifted slightly as he looked up at the rooftop and indeed saw two figures on the edge, at risk of falling at any moment. Although he couldn’t see their faces, he recognized his sister. His complexion changed drastically, and he went over to a police officer, asking, "What’s the situation up there?"
The police officer, annoyed, waved him away, "Unrelated bystanders should not interfere with police work. Step aside, step aside."
Wen Sihan’s face darkened as he shouted, "The person up there is my own sister, am I an unrelated bystander?"
The police officer, startled by his shouting, quickly responded, "The situation isn’t clear yet; our colleagues are on it. Please wait patiently."
After hearing this, Wen Sihan wanted to throw a punch; his sister was about to jump off a building and they were asking him to wait! Without another word, he turned and left, making sure to call Wen Bingchuan, who wobbled upon hearing the news. Stabilizing himself, he said authoritatively, "You go up first; I’ll follow immediately."
"What’s wrong, Bingchuan?" Seeing her husband’s grave expression, Mrs. Wen asked quietly.
It was an incident that couldn’t be kept secret, and Wen Bingchuan did not intend to hide it. He briefly explained the situation to Shen Qian. "I’ll handle it upstairs; you keep things in order down here," he instructed.
Shen Qian’s expression was serious as he nodded. Wen Bingchuan had left, and Mrs. Wen hurriedly followed. Seeing this, the other guests began to murmur louder, and with the noise coming from outside, everyone had started to form their own guesses.
Mrs. Du saw Mr. and Mrs. Wen leave with uncertain alarm on her face, "Could it be that what I said actually came true?" Wen Xiyao didn’t seem like someone who couldn’t handle setbacks.
Regardless of how ruthless Mrs. Du’s thoughts had been, if something did happen, she didn’t want Wen Xiyao to die. Making sarcastic remarks was one thing, but she couldn’t bear to watch Wen Xiyao leap to her death.
"Maybe I should go out and check, in case something really has happened," Mrs. Du said hesitantly.
Du Honghai thought for a moment and nodded, "You go."
Mrs. Du quietly left her seat. Everyone’s attention was on the wedding and the noise outside; no one noticed that one person had left.
**
Rooftop terrace.
Wen Sihan had just arrived when he saw his sister being held hostage by Du Nan, his face turning an ashen hue as he rebuked sternly, "Du Nan, let Xiyao go."
Upon seeing him, Du Nan laughed, "Brother Wen, you’re here. Are you also trying to persuade me to let Xiyao go? But what should I do? I can’t do it; I can’t let go."
Originally, Shen Qinglan and Wen Xiyao had worked together and managed to calm Du Nan’s emotions. But as the police arrived and surrounded them, Du Nan became agitated once more.
Du Nan glanced at the edge of the rooftop and gently said to Wen Xiyao, "Xiyao, they won’t let me take you away. I can’t live without you, so let’s go down together. People say it’s not important to be born on the same day, but to die on the same day. To die with you might also be considered a kind of happiness."
Wen Xiyao’s eyes flickered with a trace of panic, but she strived to remain composed as she softly spoke, "Du Nan, calm down. They don’t want to stop you from taking me away, they just want us to leave this dangerous place first. If we’re not careful, we could lose our lives. How about this: we move away from here and then I’ll leave with you. I won’t marry Shen Junyu, I’ll go with you, right away."
Du Nan’s eyes lit up but quickly dimmed, letting out a scoff, "Heh, Xiyao, even you are trying to deceive me now? Don’t think I don’t know that if I really went with you, they would separate us."
Seeing Du Nan wasn’t fooled, Wen Xiyao was at a loss and looked at Shen Qinglan.
Shen Qinglan walked out from the back of the crowd to the front, "Du Nan." She called out, drawing his attention.
"I know you want to take Xiyao away, and we agree. As long as you come here, we will publicly call off the wedding between the Shen Family and Wen Family. This wedding will be canceled, and you can be with Xiyao forever."
"You’re lying to me. Can you decide for the Shen Family?" Du Nan roared.
"I can. You should know that the head of the Shen Family is my grandfather, and the person he cares about most is me. As long as I say the word, my grandfather would agree to anything," Shen Qinglan spoke earnestly, her expression serious.
Shen Qinglan was the apple of Old Sir Shen’s eye, something that many people knew and was not a secret. Naturally, Du Nan had also heard of it. Shen Junyu also spoke up in agreement, "I can also promise you that. Let you take Xiyao away—I would be willing to give her to you."
Du Nan’s expression softened a bit. Everyone has the instinct to survive; if you can live, who would think of dying?
"Are you really willing to let me leave with Xi Yao and cancel the wedding?" Du Nan asked.
"Yes, I’m willing," Shen Junyu said, his gaze turning to Wen Xiyao. The look in his eyes made Wen Xiyao’s heart tremble, and she nearly burst into tears. At that moment, she knew Shen Junyu wasn’t just saying these words to appease Du Nan; he was serious. As long as Du Nan was willing to let her go, he truly was willing to let her leave and never be with her again.
Du Nan’s expression seemed to waver even more. He was about to speak when he saw from the corner of his eye a policeman approaching from the side. There were people all around, and his attention had been on the Shen siblings, so he didn’t notice someone drawing near. Du Nan panicked, turned around, and said, "Don’t come any closer, or I’ll jump."
The policeman immediately dared not move. A flicker of regret flashed through Shen Qinglan’s eyes; they were so close to success. In order not to agitate Du Nan, the policeman went back to his original position and did not dare to make another move.
**
Downstairs, Mrs. Du made her way through the crowd and glanced up at the rooftop. Originally, she thought it was only Wen Xiyao who wanted to jump off the building, but to her shock, she saw her son holding Wen Xiyao, threatening to jump. Mrs. Du’s legs went weak, her face turned pale, and she shouted Du Nan’s name loudly, but regrettably, no one upstairs could hear her.
Seeing this, Mrs. Du hurriedly ran toward the elevator, not forgetting to call Du Honghai on her way. "Old Du, something has happened; Du Nan has kidnapped Wen Xiyao and threatens to jump off the building," she said, her voice breaking into tears.
Du Honghai’s face turned ashen. He stood up immediately and left, with the people at his table looking at him curiously, wondering what had happened.
"Weren’t you saying Du Nan was in Hawaii? What is happening now?" As soon as Du Honghai saw Mrs. Du, he asked her sharply. He had just asked his wife about Du Nan’s whereabouts a short time ago.
"He told me he was in Hawaii," Mrs. Du said in tears, "Now is not the time to talk about this; we need to persuade our son to come down—that’s the priority." Mrs. Du showed a rare moment of composure.
When Mr. and Mrs. Du reached the rooftop, Du Nan’s emotions had already become uncontrollable again due to the policeman’s attempt. He was edging closer to the side of the roof, and Wen Xiyao didn’t dare to struggle at all. Being so close to the edge, any struggle could easily cause both of them to lose balance.
"Du Nan!" Mrs. Du shouted, pulling back Du Nan’s foot that was about to miss its step.
"Dad, Mom!" Du Nan exclaimed in surprise, instinctively calling out.
"Du Nan, what are you doing? Come down right now," Du Honghai said sternly.
"Dad, how come you’re here?" Du Nan asked, completely oblivious to the fact that his parents had come to attend the wedding, and they had no intent to tell him.
"Du Nan, what are you doing? Do you want to take your mother’s life?" Mrs. Du cried out, her tears flowing freely, "Are you willing to die for a woman, and you treat your father and me like this?"
Seeing his mother, Du Nan’s eyes were full of pain. "Mom, I don’t want to either, but I really can’t lose Xi Yao. Without her, I can’t go on living."
"Then are you heartless enough to drive your parents to their deaths? Have you thought about it? Your mother would die too if she lost you. I only have you in my life; if you die, tell me, how am I supposed to live?" Mrs. Du cried heart-wrenchingly, genuinely unable to believe that Du Nan would do such a thing.
Du Nan’s eyes also turned red. "Mom, just think of me as selfish, just think you never had a son like me, okay?"
Mrs. Du screamed, "Du Nan, are you really trying to take your mother’s life? Fine, jump then. If you jump, I’ll jump too. After all, if you die, I can’t live either. We might as well end it all."
Qinglan saw that Du Nan’s attention was fully captured by Mrs. Du and gave Shen Junyu a look. Shen Junyu immediately understood and silently retreated a few steps, making his way toward the back of the crowd.
Aside from Wen Xiyao, no one noticed this scene.
After Wen Bingchuan and his wife arrived, Mrs. Wen, overwhelmed by shock, trembled and leaned weakly against her husband. She looked at Wen Xiyao with tear-filled eyes. Wen Bingchuan’s face was stern. Seeing that Mr. and Mrs. Du couldn’t persuade Du Nan to come back, he handed his wife off to Wen Sihan and took two steps forward, "Du Nan, if you want to be with Xiyao, that’s fine. I agree."
Upon hearing these words from Wen Bingchuan, Du Nan’s eyes lit up. "Uncle Wen, are you serious?"
"Yes," Wen Bingchuan said gravely, "I am Xiyao’s father, and I have the right to decide. Come over here."
Unfortunately, Du Nan was unwilling to believe him. He looked at the increasing crowd around him and glanced back. Below was a dense mass of people, and he could vaguely see a life-saving air cushion laid out.
He laughed bitterly, "I know you’re all lying to me. You won’t let me be with Xiyao, but thank you, Uncle Wen, for saying that. Even if it’s a lie, it’s still the most beautiful lie."
He turned to Mr. and Mrs. Du. "Mom and Dad, I’m sorry. I know what I’m doing is very selfish, and I haven’t considered your feelings at all. This is it for me. Without Xiyao, I don’t have the courage to go on living. Let’s wait for the next life then. In the next life, I definitely won’t fall in love with a girl named Wen Xiyao. Instead, I’ll be a good son to you and repay you. I’m sorry."
Hearing this, everyone present shrank their pupils in shock, realizing what he was about to do. Their faces changed drastically. Qinglan’s expression turned dark as she looked in Shen Junyu’s direction and saw that he was close to grasping Du Nan. Her hands clenched into fists involuntarily.
"Du Nan, calm down. Don’t do anything stupid," Wen Xiyao pleaded, her voice trembling slightly. It was not obvious, but Du Nan still perceived it.
Du Nan looked down at her, speaking softly, "Xiyao, don’t be afraid. I’m with you, no matter where we go. I’m sorry for my selfishness. I can’t stand to watch you marry someone else. I love you, but you’re unwilling to love me. What should I do? My heart aches so much I can’t breathe. If I can’t have you, then I’d rather others can’t have you as well. Hate me, even if you hate me for all eternity, it doesn’t matter."
"Don’t do anything foolish, Du Nan."
"Du Nan, let’s talk this over calmly, be reasonable."
The people around continued to urge him, but Du Nan was no longer listening. His eyes were red, yet filled with tenderness. He slightly curved his lips and leaned backward...
"No!" Mrs. Du screamed in horror.
Wen Xiyao’s tears suddenly fell. She cast a deep, lingering look in Shen Junyu’s direction, her eyes filled with longing and reluctance. The tears, carried by the wind, fell onto Du Nan’s face, warm and searing to his heart, causing it to jerk violently. He stared at Wen Xiyao, then suddenly pushed her with force, sending her crashing to the ground.
Shen Junyu reacted swiftly and caught Du Nan, but the downward force pulled his whole body toward the fall. He grabbed the edge of the rooftop; fortunately, the edge was slightly higher than the surroundings, providing a point of leverage.
The two hung in mid-air, turning everyone’s faces pale at the sight.
It was Wen Bingchuan who first snapped to action, not bothering with Wen Xiyao, but instead grabbing Shen Junyu’s shoulder. When the police saw this, they immediately came forward to assist. But no matter what, it was not easy to pull up two grown men.
**
On the first floor banquet hall, Shen Qian stood up, walked onto the stage and took the microphone from the host’s hand, speaking warmly, "Thank you to all the guests for coming to attend the wedding of my son and the Wen Family daughter. I here express my deep gratitude, but due to some special reasons, the wedding will have to be delayed for a while. Please be patient everyone in the Qianqing Palace."
As soon as these words came out, the scene immediately became restless. Everyone started guessing what had happened, and the expressions on both Old Sir Shen’s and the other senior’s faces changed. They looked at Shen Qian with puzzlement, not knowing what he meant by his words or to what these ’certain reasons’ referred.
Shen Qian did not explain, but continued, "Many of you here today have traveled a long way to come. For the delay of the wedding, I also express my utmost apologies."
Neither the groom nor the bride was to be seen on the scene, and even the bride’s family members were nowhere to be found, which led everyone to speculate whether the bride had run away. With this in mind, the looks on people’s faces became quite interesting.
Shen Qian returned to his seat and both elder gentlemen looked at him together. Shen Qian simply said, "I will explain this matter to you both once we return." He patted Chu Yunrong’s shoulder, "I need to step out for a moment, please take care of things here."
On the top floor, Shen Junyu grabbed Du Nan, hanging him in mid-air, while others hurriedly tried to grab his shoulders, attempting to pull him up.
Du Nan stared blankly at his hand being held, he let out a bitter laugh, and forcefully tried to break free from Shen Junyu’s grip. Shen Junyu held on tightly; Du Nan absolutely could not have an accident on his own wedding day.
Shen Junyu looked at him, "Du Nan, calm down and think about your parents."
"Shen Junyu, I don’t need your rescue. I would rather die than have you save me."
Mr. and Mrs. Du lay on the edge of the rooftop and saw Du Nan struggling to break free from Shen Junyu’s grip, their faces turning even paler. Du Honghai’s health was already poor, and seeing Du Nan so determined to seek his own death, his already pale face showed signs of turning blue, and he clutched his chest, unable to speak.
"Du Nan, don’t do it, you are going to kill your mother!" Mrs. Du shouted at Du Nan, her well-maintained face filled with tears. She regretted it; she should never have let her son fall for Wen Xiyao in the first place. If she had known it would end like this, she would have stopped it at all costs, even at the risk of her own life.
Wen Sihan stepped forward to help up Wen Xiyao, but she didn’t care about herself and instead turned her head to look at Shen Junyu. She lay there, reaching out in Shen Junyu’s direction, "Jun Yu."
When Du Nan saw Wen Xiyao, his eyes suddenly brightened, but then he saw her first reaction was to look at Shen Junyu, and the brightness in his eyes instantly faded, leaving behind a desolate emptiness.
He looked at Wen Xiyao deeply, observing the tears yet to dry on her face and the concern in her eyes, yet the focal point of that concern was not him. The corners of his mouth curled up into a bitter smile.
In the end, he could not win Wen Xiyao’s heart.
He looked at Shen Junyu, at his hands with veins popping out, his eyes hardened, and he suddenly yanked downwards, intending to pull Shen Junyu down with him. The hand Shen Junyu had on the edge of the rooftop was pulled by this force and loosened. He suddenly plunged downward, but fortunately, the others had already grabbed his shoulders just in time, preventing Shen Junyu from falling. On the other hand, Du Nan let go of Shen Junyu’s hand, his body falling straight towards the ground like a line.
"Du Nan!" Mrs. Du screamed in horror, and Du Honghai collapsed on the spot, only avoiding a fall due to a quick reaction from a nearby police officer who caught him. If not for that, it would have been both Du men falling today.
Du Nan’s body fell, but his gaze was fixed on Wen Xiyao, watching the person getting further and further away from him as his mouth curled into a slight smile.
Xi Yao, in the end, I cannot bear to take you with me in death. Seeing your tears, my heart aches.
Several people clumsily lifted Shen Junyu up, and Wen Xiyao immediately embraced him, sobbing uncontrollably; just moments before, she was on the brink of losing him.
Shen Junyu returned the embrace, softly comforting her, "It’s okay, it’s okay, I’m fine, don’t cry."
Wen Xiyao didn’t want to cry, but tears blurred her eyes. No one knew just how scared she was the instant Du Nan tugged at Shen Junyu—she hadn’t even been that terrified when Du Nan dragged her off the building.
She clung to Shen Junyu tightly as if holding onto a treasure regained, her body trembling lightly. Everyone could hear her whimpers. They all thought she was just frightened, but only Wen Xiyao knew it was not just that, but also for Shen Junyu. She could now understand how he must have felt when the plane crashed.
Shen Qinglan swiftly steadied the person beside her, her palms sweaty and her complexion pale. In that moment just now, even she had been frightened into a cold sweat.
Downstairs, the noise and the sound of emergency services from ambulance 120 were rising. She wasn’t sure how Du Nan was after the fall, but from such a height, even if there was a rescue air cushion, his situation couldn’t be good.
Mr. and Mrs. Du fainted one after another, and the police quickly stepped forward to take them down and hand them over to the medical staff. Shen Qinglan stood still, her legs slightly weak. She looked to the person she had been supporting and realized it was Annie—her face deathly pale, utterly shocked by the day’s events.
Shen Qinglan’s gaze turned dull as she released her hand and called out to her father, "Daddy." Shen Qian, noticing something was off with Shen Qinglan’s complexion, hurried over to support her, "Qinglan."
"Daddy, take me downstairs," Shen Qinglan whispered. Shen Qian, seeing her pallor, didn’t hesitate to lead her down.
Just as they reached the first floor, they saw Jin Enxi hurrying over. She had rushed from home and upon arriving at the hotel entrance, saw Du Nan falling. Worried about Shen Qinglan, she hurried to find her and ran into her.
Shen Qinglan stopped her, "Enxi." Not avoiding Shen Qian since he now knew her identity, there was no need to avoid certain people unnecessarily, "Enxi, how is Du Nan?" she asked. If Du Nan had died at her brother’s wedding, things would become complicated.
Jin Enxi examined her from head to toe, relieved to see that apart from looking somewhat pale, there was no other discomfort. "The doctors have taken him. He’s quite lucky; he landed on a big tree first before hitting the ground. I just took a glance—aside from abrasions, there are no obvious wounds." As for internal injuries, that was unclear, but outwardly, Du Nan seemed very well off.
Shen Qinglan’s eyes flickered. She hadn’t expected Du Nan’s life to be so resilient, but it was better this way. If blood had been spilled at the wedding, her brother’s wedding would’ve been ruined by him, and Du Nan’s goal would have been achieved. For now, she would let him off; there would be plenty of time to deal with him later.
Shen Qinglan looked to Shen Qian, "Daddy, you go handle the situation there. I’m fine here with Enxi. Tell Fu Hengyi not to worry about me."
Shen Qian nodded, gave Jin Enxi a sharp glance, said nothing, and turned away. The wedding ceremony indeed still required his presence. Since Du Nan hadn’t died, the wedding must go on.
On the rooftop, Wen Xiyao had finally stopped crying in Shen Junyu’s arms and gradually calmed down. Shen Junyu kept whispering comfort to her, and seeing her calm, he patted her shoulder and helped her up, "It’s all right, don’t be afraid."
Wen Xiyao’s makeup was completely ruined, her eyeliner had smeared and washed away by tears; she looked a mess. Shen Junyu’s smile was gentle as he wiped her face with his hand, "Now you really do look like a painted cat."
Wen Sihan watched the scene quietly, a relieved smile on his face. He stepped forward, "Alright, enough clinging to each other. Hurry downstairs and touch up your makeup. The wedding time has been rescheduled to the next auspicious hour which is two hours from now—there’s plenty of time."
Luckily, when the two families discussed the wedding date, they chose this day because it had two auspicious hours within it. Otherwise, today’s wedding would’ve had to be canceled.
Shen Junyu swept Wen Xiyao into his arms and carried her downstairs. Her head buried in the crook of his neck, she breathed in his familiar scent. Her restless heart was finally completely at ease. She tightened her arms around him, and he looked down at her, offering a small, comforting smile.
Returning to the dressing room, the makeup artist and stylist were already there. Seeing the couple’s condition, they knew something must have happened but didn’t ask, immediately beginning their work.
Although Shen Junyu’s suit was custom-made, he still had two spare sets. The trouble was with Wen Xiyao’s wedding dress; its hem had been torn by a protrusion on the ground during Du Nan’s final push.
Her wedding dress had been custom-made over six months, a unique piece in the world. It was now too late to buy another one. In the end, it was Shen Qinglan who proposed inviting two embroidery masters to mend the tear by embroidering flowers over it, thus avoiding embarrassment.
Because of her recent crying, Wen Xiyao’s eyes were swollen red, and Shen Qinglan asked the hotel staff to cook two eggs for her.
Shen Junyu was in the next room; only Shen Qinglan stayed with Wen Xiyao, who had no smile on her face. Anyone who experienced such an event during their wedding would struggle to feel cheerful.
Having been through similar experiences herself, Shen Qinglan could understand Wen Xiyao’s feelings. She thought for a moment before speaking, "Sister Xiyao, how about we cancel the wedding for now and hold it another time?" While Du Nan wasn’t dead or even bleeding, the incident was ominous enough.
Wen Xiyao forced a smile, attempting to appear happier, "I’m fine, Qinglan, the wedding must go on." Just now, one of her bridesmaids, who was also a college classmate, had come and told her that the guests were all speculating. If the wedding didn’t proceed, even if just postponed, it would confirm the rumors, dragging the reputation of the Wen and Shen families through the mud. Thus, not only did the wedding need to continue, but she also had to appear in the happiest and best state possible to dispel all the gossip.
A knock sounded on the door of the dressing room. Shen Qinglan went to open it and saw Annie standing there, a face full of apprehension, "Is Xiyao doing okay?"
Shen Qinglan’s gaze was indifferent as she looked at Annie, then stepped aside, "You can ask her yourself."
A flicker of guilt passed through Annie’s eyes; she dared not meet Shen Qinglan’s seemingly all-seeing gaze. With her head down, she slipped past Shen Qinglan and walked over to Wen Xiyao, "Xiyao, are you okay?"
Wen Xiyao’s expression instantly turned cold as she responded firmly, "I’m not dead." Her tone lacked the familiarity of the past.
Annie had expected this reaction, her mouth twisting with bitterness, "Xiyao, I’m sorry, I didn’t expect this to happen. If I had known sooner, I definitely wouldn’t have helped Du Nan."
Wen Xiyao remained unemotional, picking up a gift box from the table and handing it to Annie, "This is the wedding gift you gave me. I’m giving it back to you."
Annie was taken aback, "Xiyao, I’m sorry, I really didn’t do it on purpose."
"I know you didn’t do it on purpose, and that’s why I don’t blame you. But Annie, we’re no longer friends from now on. Take back this gift. You’ve already given me another gift, one that’s left a deep impression on me, one I’ll never forget in my lifetime."
Panic crossed Annie’s face, "Xiyao, please don’t be like this. I really won’t do it again. I promise. You’re my best and only friend; if you treat me like this, I’ll be genuinely heartbroken."
Regrettably, no matter what Annie said, Wen Xiyao was unmoved.
"I’d rather you didn’t attend my wedding. Please leave; I’m a bit tired now and would like to rest for a while," Wen Xiyao said indifferently.
Stunned, Annie looked at Wen Xiyao incredulously. She never imagined she’d be banned from attending the wedding. Leaving now would mean losing all her dignity, "Xiyao."
Yet Wen Xiyao had already closed her eyes, as if she had truly fallen asleep.
Annie waited for a little while, and seeing that Wen Xiyao did not react, she left. If she continued to stick around shamelessly, being escorted out by security would only add to her embarrassment.
After Annie left, Wen Xiyao finally opened her eyes. She quietly looked at herself in the mirror and whispered, "Qinglan, do you think I’m a failure as a person? Even my best friend betrayed me."
Shen Qinglan was slightly taken aback before replying, "Those who can betray you were never true friends. It’s good to see their true colors sooner rather than later."
"Is that so?" Wen Xiyao’s gaze was confused. Shen Qinglan was about to continue speaking when the door was knocked again. This time, the visitor was Shen Junyu. Shen Qinglan immediately gave them space and walked out only to find that Fu Hengyi had been waiting outside, obviously for a while.
Shen Qinglan approached and leaned forward slightly, "Have you been waiting long?"
Fu Hengyi smiled, took her hand, and feeling that it was somewhat cold, draped his jacket over her shoulders, "Don’t catch a cold."
Shen Qinglan chuckled and tightened the jacket, "I’m fine. It’s just that Sister Xiyao was frightened."
Shen Qinglan pushed Fu Hengyi’s wheelchair, "Let’s go, we should head back. It’s about time."
The wedding ceremony began. The host went on stage and delivered the opening speech, followed by the entrance of the groom and bride. Little Douding and a little girl, dressed in flower girl outfits, walked in front of Wen Xiyao. In this whole affair, the least affected were these two adorable children; they knew nothing and wore sweet smiles. Shen Qinglan’s heavy heart lightened a bit when she caught the smile from little Pei Hao.
Fu Hengyi held her hand, and Shen Qinglan smiled back, gripping his.
The couple on stage laughed happily, while what the audience was thinking remained unknown.
Through the vows, exchange of rings, and the kiss, everything went smoothly. The wedding banquet did not end until after three o’clock. Shen Qinglan helped see off the guests before she and Fu Hengyi went to the hospital together; she needed to find out about Du Nan’s condition. Wen Sihan also accompanied them. Initially, Wen Sixian wanted to go as well, but Wen Sihan was worried about his temper and that he might beat Du Nan to a pulp. He refused to let him come along.
Arriving at the hospital, they found out that Du Nan, having only minor injuries, had already been taken away by the police after the doctor’s examination.
Shen Qinglan, upon hearing the doctor’s words, had a cold glint in her eyes. On the way out of the hospital, she couldn’t help but sneer, "I didn’t expect Du Nan to have such a tough life, falling from the eighth floor and only sustaining minor injuries." Shen Qinglan had thought that at the very least some bones would have been broken.
At the police station, they saw Mr. and Mrs. Du, accompanied by someone who looked like a lawyer. Shen Qinglan’s gaze grew icy.
Mr. and Mrs. Du, upon waking up in the hospital and learning that their son was not dead but had been taken to the police station, hurried over, hoping to get Du Nan bailed out. But no sooner had they arrived than Shen Qinglan and her party did too.
The police chief, upon learning of Fu Hengyi’s arrival, personally came out to meet him. Knowing that he was a relative of the victim, he immediately said, "Commander Fu, I assure you that I will thoroughly investigate the matter. Kidnapping and intentional injury are criminal offenses, and the person can certainly not be released on bail."
Fu Hengyi spoke calmly, "Director Liu, I’m not being unreasonable, but this man is very dangerous and highly aggressive. I’m also worried that if he gets out, he might harm others."
Director Liu nodded repeatedly, "Understood. Commander Fu has considered everything carefully. We will definitely keep an eye on him and absolutely not let him go out and harm others."
On the other side, upon hearing this, Mr. and Mrs. Du were instantly upset, especially Mrs. Du, who exclaimed, "My son merely attempted suicide, why do you have the right to detain him?"
