Chapter 361: 363. Du Nan’s Prayer (13 Updates More)

Du Nan smiled, "Xi Yao, I’m here to pay my New Year’s respects to Uncle and Auntie." He was still holding several gift bags in his hand.

"The thought is appreciated, but now you can leave, and take this stuff back with you. My house is already piled up with these gifts, and my mom’s just worrying about how to get rid of them, so please don’t add to the commotion."

Facing Wen Xiyao’s harsh words, Du Nan’s expression didn’t change a bit. His gaze fell on Wen Xiyao’s face, "Xi Yao, I didn’t come here with any other intentions this time. I know I was wrong before, that I hurt you, and I know it’s too late to apologize now. I’ve come to terms with it and I promise I won’t bother you anymore. My only request is that you stop rejecting me and just consider me as a childhood playmate who grew up with you, okay?"

"No way!" Wen Sixian spoke up coldly. He had heard some noise from inside and came out to see what was happening, only to run into Du Nan. In an instant, he felt an itch in his fists.

Seeing Wen Sixian, Du Nan stiffened. The lesson Wen Sixian had taught him back in Beijing had been too profound. Even after so much time had passed, just the sight of him made Du Nan tense.

"Brother Wen."

Wen Sixian waved his hand, "I can’t accept that title of ’brother’ from you. Our family doesn’t welcome you either. Now go on, get out of here. If you don’t leave, I’ll beat you." He lifted his fist.

Du Nan’s face turned stiff as he set down the gifts, "Alright, I’ll leave right now. Please wish Uncle and Auntie a Happy New Year for me."

"Hold on." Wen Sixian stopped him, "Take your things with you. Our family isn’t in need of these."

Du Nan glanced at Wen Xiyao, and seeing that she remained silent, a trace of sadness flashed through his eyes. He picked up his things, put them in the car, and as he was driving out, just happened to see Wen Sihan’s car pull in, with none other than Shen Junyu sitting in the passenger seat.

Seeing Shen Junyu’s profile, Du Nan’s eyes instantly turned icy. He took a cold look at Wen Sihan’s car before driving off.

Shen Junyu got out of the car and saw Wen Xiyao waiting at the door. His eyes warmed with a soft smile, "Why didn’t you wait inside for me?"

Wen Xiyao gave him a sidelong glance, "Who said I was waiting for you? Don’t flatter yourself."

"Oh, still won’t admit it, huh? I wonder who it was muttering just now, wondering why this person hasn’t arrived yet." Wen Sixian piercingly exposed her without a shred of sibling love.

Wen Xiyao shot a glare at her traitorous second brother, which only made the smile in Shen Junyu’s eyes grow stronger.

Mrs. Wen and Wen Bingchuan had just come downstairs and upon seeing Shen Junyu, they immediately broke into smiles.

"Jun Yu is here, come on in and have a seat."

Shen Junyu entered, paying his New Year’s respects to Mrs. Wen and Wen Bingchuan.

While the Wen Family enjoyed peace and happiness, the Du Family’s home was shrouded in gloom and despair.

As soon as Du Nan’s car came to a stop, Mrs. Du immediately came out, looking at him with hope, "How did it go? Did you talk to your Uncle Wen and Aunt Wen?"

With an impassive face, Du Nan silently entered the house. Du Honghai was sitting in the living room and seeing Du Nan’s expression, he knew that things had not gone well. He sighed, "Ah well, let it be."

Following him inside, Mrs. Du overheard her husband’s words and spoke up, "Is the Wen Family really that heartless? After all, our two families have been close for so many years. Are they really going to just watch us die without lending a hand?"

Du Nan finally spoke, "I didn’t even get to see Uncle Wen and Aunt Wen,"

Mrs. Du turned to look at him, "They weren’t home?"

Du Nan shook his head, and Mrs. Du immediately understood—they didn’t want to see Du Nan. Anger welled up inside her, "They bear a grudge over such a trivial matter for so long? The Wen Family really can hold their own. And it’s not like we haven’t apologized. Du Nan even knelt down for them. What more do they want? Is only their child precious, and mine isn’t?"

Du Honghai frowned, "Stop it. If they help, it’s out of kindness; if they don’t, it’s their right. Considering how things are between our families now, it’s normal if they don’t want to help."

Mrs. Du became agitated, "I’m doing it for you all, for our family. The company is on the brink of bankruptcy. If we can’t secure the bank loan, it’ll be over for real. The Du Family’s foundation will be destroyed. We aren’t asking the Wen Family for money, just to be a guarantor. Why can’t they do that?"

"Mom, I’ll find a way to handle the company’s affairs." Du Nan said.

"Find a way, what can you possibly do, right now everyone outside is watching our family’s embarrassment. They can’t wait for our family to go bankrupt, even if you ask others to lend money, you won’t be able to borrow any," Mrs. Du said, her face full of worry. These past few months, the situation at the Du Family had been getting worse by the day. Several executives had already resigned, and many projects had been forced to a halt due to the broken capital chain. Even some shareholders of the Du Family had started selling off their company stocks.

Du Nan had been running around among various shareholders lately, just to stabilize their moods to keep them from rashly selling their shares and had assured them that he would find a way to raise funds to revive the Du Family.

He had also gone to other business partners of the Du Family, hoping to hand over some of the decent projects to them in exchange for liquid capital, but the Du Family was now such a mess that no one was willing to take over.

Du Honghai sighed, "This is fate. If the Du Family really can’t hold on, just declare bankruptcy." He had come to terms with it.

Mrs. Du exclaimed, "Declare bankruptcy? Are you joking? If it weren’t for the Wen Family’s suppression at the beginning, would our capital chain have been broken? The Du Family’s current predicament isn’t due to mismanagement—as long as the Wen Family is willing to be our guarantor, the bank will lend to us. Why don’t I go and talk to the Wen Family?"

"Mom, please don’t add to the chaos," Du Nan disapproved. If his mother really went to the Wen Family, it wouldn’t be helpful; it would be interference. With her temperament, if the Wen Family refused, who knows what she might say. The relationship between their families was already thin ice. If it completely shattered, then the Du Family could only declare bankruptcy.

Du Honghai also tried to persuade his wife, "You should just stay at home; Du Nan has been tired enough lately."

Mrs. Du cried out of frustration, "What do you all mean? Am I wrong for wanting to do something for our family?"

"Mom, that’s not what we mean. I will visit the Wen Family again soon. Let me handle this matter while you take care of Daddy at home."

Mrs. Du was still upset inside, but now neither Du Honghai nor Du Nan was in the mood to comfort her. Du Nan’s mind was entirely occupied by the scene of having just seen Shen Junyu. He couldn’t help but think, if Wen Xiyao hadn’t gone to the Zhou Family back then, would he not have encountered Shen Junyu, and would things be different than they are now?

But there are no ifs in this world. Wen Xiyao had met Shen Junyu and fell in love with him—that was an indisputable fact. The woman he had guarded and adored for so many years had been taken away like that. It was impossible for Du Nan not to hate, not Wen Xiyao, but Shen Junyu.

Du Nan’s next visit to the Wen Family was the following day. When he arrived, Wen Xiyao and Shen Junyu were just about to go out.

Du Nan hadn’t expected to see Shen Junyu so early at the Wen Family. It was evident that he had stayed at the Wen Family’s place the night before. Thinking about this, Du Nan’s gaze grew cold as he looked at Shen Junyu, who slightly raised his eyebrows.

Seeing Du Nan again, Wen Xiyao also couldn’t help feeling agitated. Her expression cooled, "What do you want by coming here again?"

Du Nan’s eyes softened as he explained, "Xi Yao, I’m here for Uncle Wen."

"Looking for me?" Wen Bingchuan spoke up as he had just come in from outside.

Du Nan’s eyes lit up when he saw Wen Bingchuan, "Uncle Wen, there are some matters I would like to discuss with you."

Wen Bingchuan immediately understood. Although he had not been paying special attention to the Du Family’s situation, he knew some of it. Du Nan had come over two days in a row, but it was not to see Wen Xiyao; it was not hard to guess his purpose.

"Come in," Wen Bingchuan said.

Wen Xiyao glanced at her father, wanting to say something, but Shen Junyu gave her a look, and she immediately shut her mouth.

"Uncle, then Xi Yao and I will go first," Shen Junyu said kindly.

Wen Bingchuan smiled and nodded, "Yeah, go ahead."

Du Nan followed Wen Bingchuan into the house. Mrs. Wen saw Du Nan and didn’t show a welcoming face. She glanced at her husband and then went upstairs.

Wen Bingchuan placed a cup of tea in front of Du Nan, who accept it awkwardly, "Uncle Wen, I came here today to..."

Wen Bingchuan waved his hand, "You don’t need to say it, I know why you’re here. I’ve watched you grow up since you were a child. The relationship between Du Family and Wen Family has always been good. As an elder, if you made a mistake and realized your fault, I should forgive you; after all, young people make mistakes, right? But as a father, Xi Yao is my most beloved daughter—it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say she is the apple of my eye. You hurt her, and I cannot forgive that."

"Uncle Wen, the Du Family really can’t hold on any longer. If it weren’t for having no other choice, I wouldn’t have the cheek to come here. These past few months, my father has been sick with worry over the company, having been hospitalized several times, and he didn’t even rest well during the New Year. Seeing him like this, it pains me even more. Uncle Wen, I beg you, please help the Du Family, just one last time, can you?" Du Nan pleaded softly.

Wen Bingchuan looked at this young man who used to be spirited and confident, now begging so humbly, and he sighed deeply in his heart, "Du Nan, had you known this day would come, why did you do it in the first place?"

Du Nan’s smile was bitter, "Uncle Wen, you know I’ve liked Xi Yao since childhood. Over the years, my affection for her has grown deeper with time and age. Even I didn’t realize how important Xi Yao is in my heart—she is my life. What a person would do in desperation when they’re about to lose their life is beyond what even they themselves can imagine."
