Chapter 308: 309. Second Aunt’s Request (30 Updates)
Daniel wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, thinking to himself his family’s temper was just too explosive, quick to send someone off to meet God. "Well, Enxi, don’t get excited, hear me out. After Frank found out about this, he called me because he originally wanted to call you directly, but he felt too ashamed to face you, so he called me instead."
"That Frank, I don’t think he’s a good person either, can’t even keep his own students in line; I don’t believe for a second he knew nothing about what his student did," Jin Enxi snorted coldly.
Shen Qinglan, however, didn’t share that view. Although their interactions were few, she could see that Frank was a person with proper values and would hardly condone his own student’s wrongdoings.
"So does this mean Frank and Catherine are now on opposing sides?"
Daniel shook his head, "Not exactly opposing sides, after all, Frank has a good relationship with Catherine’s father. If Catherine hadn’t done these things, Frank probably wouldn’t want to disgrace the Boyle Family."
"It was that Catherine who instigated the violence outside the art gallery last time, wasn’t it?" Catherine suddenly voiced.
Daniel nodded affirmatively, "You guessed right, that’s what Frank told me. However, due to lack of evidence, we can’t do much to Catherine."
Jin Enxi huffed, "No evidence, that just means they’re too dumb to find it." Her eyes were darting around, clearly plotting something devious.
"Qinglan, Frank asked me to convey his apologies to you," Daniel said.
Shen Qinglan didn’t blame Frank, after all, the incidents were Catherine’s doing, and Frank was unaware.
Jin Enxi’s eyes continued to move around restlessly as she suddenly spoke out, "Qinglan, something about this doesn’t feel right to me. This happened several months ago, why has Frank only thought to investigate now? And the investigation immediately led to Catherine?" Suspicion was etched all over her face.
Daniel hadn’t initially thought about this, but Jin Enxi’s reminder suddenly made him feel something was amiss, prompting him to indulge in a conspiracy theory, "Yeah, Enxi is right, I hadn’t noticed but the arts festival was back in July, and now it’s November,"
Shen Qinglan, seeing the expressions on their faces suggesting "Maybe Frank is playing the good cop," a flicker of a smile flashed in her eyes. "Actually, you don’t need to be so anxious. If I’m not mistaken, someone must have tipped Frank off or he discovered something on his own."
At the time, they had simply looked in the wrong direction; that’s why they couldn’t uncover the truth. Now with a clear target, investigations were naturally much easier.
Seeing that Shen Qinglan had no doubts about Frank, Jin Enxi shrugged her shoulders.
After discussing everything, Shen Qinglan naturally left Daniel’s place. It was getting late, and Jin Enxi lost interest in shopping. Knowing that she still had things to discuss with Daniel, Shen Qinglan left by herself.
Shen Qinglan first returned to the Shen Family home and unexpectedly ran into someone she hadn’t seen for a long time.
"Aunt Yaqin," Shen Qinglan greeted Lu Yaqin, but her expression was very cold.
Lu Yaqin smiled, her eyes showing a hint of worry.
Old Sir Shen sat there with a stony face, not uttering a word, "Lanlan, since you’re back now, come here for a moment."
Shen Qinglan raised her eyebrows slightly and sat down beside Old Sir Shen. Seeing this, Old Sir Shen looked towards Lu Yaqin, "Lanlan is home now; if you have something to say, say it to her."
Lu Yaqin looked hesitant but, encountering Shen Qinglan’s gaze, she finally spoke up with determination, "Qinglan, I need to ask for your help with Junze."
Shen Qinglan raised an eyebrow at her, "Aunt Yaqin, what do you mean by that?"
"I hope you can help Junze manage the company."
"Aunt Yaqin, if I remember correctly, Shen Junze’s company has its own people to assist him; I’m sorry, but I cannot help."
Hearing Shen Qinglan’s reply, Lu Yaqin’s eyes filled with bitterness, for she had come for this exact reason, "Qinglan, we were wrong before, failing to see my brother’s true colors. Now the company has fallen into Lu Jincai’s hands, and Junze has no say in the company anymore. I really have no other recourse, Qinglan, please help Junze, for the sake of him being the sole lineage of your Second Uncle."
Shen Qinglan was actually surprised that within just over a month, the company had fallen into Lu Jincai’s hands. She wondered whether to credit Lu Jincai’s ability or blame Shen Junze’s incompetence.
"Aunt Yaqin, I am powerless in this matter. You should know what Shen Junze has done. The fact that I haven’t held him accountable is out of respect for Second Uncle. When my uncle was alive, I had already refused to get involved with this matter. Now that Second Uncle is gone, I won’t agree either. If Shen Junze couldn’t protect his own assets, he has no one to blame but himself," Shen Qinglan said, her tone indifferent.
With her face marked by sadness, Lu Yaqin looked at Old Sir Shen in appeal, "Dad."
Old Sir Shen gestured dismissively, "What Lanlan said reflects my thoughts exactly. Besides, Lanlan is pregnant now, and the most important thing is for her to take care of herself and the baby."
"Dad, but Junze is your own grandson, the only bloodline left by Arang in this world. Can you bear to just stand by and watch? I know you don’t like me, but Junze is innocent. I’m not asking you to consider my face, but for the sake of Arang who has passed away, could you please care just for him?"
"If Shen Junze were in danger of losing his life, then I would undoubtedly look after him, but as it stands, is he?" Old Sir Shen countered.
"But that’s the company Arang left for Junze."
"You should have begged your brother, not troubled an old man with one foot in the grave and a pregnant woman in her third trimester," Old Sir Shen said sternly, with a cold voice.
Lu Yaqin saw that her pleas were ineffective with Old Sir Shen, so she turned to Shen Qinglan, saying nothing as she knelt down. Shen Qinglan was startled and quickly stood up, stepping aside to avoid her.
"Second Aunt, what are you doing?" Shen Qinglan asked, her tone slightly cold.
"Qinglan, I’m begging you, I know Jun Ze has done wrong before, and he deserves any blame you have for him, but if Second Aunt had any other way, she would not come to ask this of you."
Seeing her like this, Old Sir Shen immediately became angry, "Lu Yaqin, what are you doing? Get up! A senior kneeling to a junior, aren’t you ashamed? I am ashamed for you!"
Lu Yaqin didn’t get up – today she had to make Shen Qinglan agree to help; whatever it took to achieve her goal was fine.
"Second Aunt, no matter what you say today, I will not agree. You should go back."
"Qinglan, I’m begging you."
Shen Qinglan glanced at Old Sir Shen, who waved his hand, "Lanlan, go home."
Shen Qinglan walked past Lu Yaqin, who was still kneeling on the ground, without a second look and left. Lu Yaqin tried to stop her, but with the old man present, there was no stopping her. She watched helplessly as Shen Qinglan walked away.
She sat down on the ground, her expression dejected.
"Like a crooked beam with crooked rafters, a perfectly good boy you’ve raised to kneel before others at the slightest provocation," Old Sir Shen said coldly, his face darkened.
Lu Yaqin acted as if she had not heard, "Dad, are you really so heartless, not caring at all about family ties?"
Old Sir Shen looked intently at Lu Yaqin, "If you want me to help Shen Junze, fine. Send him to the Shen Family, and I will teach him myself. After that, you are not allowed to see him ever again. Can you do that?"
Lu Yaqin’s expression changed, "Dad, Jun Ze is my own son, my only son, you can’t be so cruel."
"If that’s the case, then leave. And don’t come back in the future. I will consider that I never had a son named Shen Rang, nor a grandson like Shen Jun Ze."
"Dad."
"Don’t call me Dad."
Lu Yaqin saw that Old Sir Shen was unyielding and knew nothing more could be said, so she could only stand up and leave the Shen Family.
Back at home, she saw Shen Jun Ze waiting in the living room. As soon as he saw her, he came over, "Mom, what did they say, did Shen Qinglan agree?"
Lu Yaqin shook her head and the light in Shen Jun Ze’s eyes extinguished instantly, "I knew it, I knew it would be like this. The people of the Shen Family are all heartless and ruthless, I should have expected this. They just want to see me fail, and now they’ve got what they wanted, why would they help me?"
"Don’t panic, I’ll go talk to Qinglan again today, maybe she’ll soften her heart and agree."
"That woman’s heart is harder than stone, you think she will soften?" Shen Jun Ze said with full skepticism, "Mom, why don’t you talk to Uncle again? I believe Uncle is just confused for the moment, he doesn’t have any children, who will he leave the company to after taking it away?"
The bitterness in Lu Yaqin’s eyes deepened. Before she went to the Shen Family, the first person she had tried to approach was Lu Jincai, but he was not even willing to see her, making his intentions very clear.
"Jun Ze, listen to your mother. Tomorrow, come with me to see Qinglan and apologize sincerely," she said.
Shen Jun Ze was reluctant, "Mom, why are you making me apologize again? I’ve already apologized before, and now Shen Qinglan’s child is safe. She just gives me the cold shoulder whenever she sees me, as if I owe her money. I won’t go."
"Jun Ze, you must go now, and you also need to apologize to your grandfather if you want to take the company back."
"Mom, I’m not going. Last time they kicked me out, do you think my going there will make any difference?"
No matter what was said, Shen Jun Ze simply refused to go. He hadn’t forgotten what happened last time at the hospital.
Without Shen Jun Ze willing to apologize, Lu Yaqin was utterly out of options.
The next day, while Lu Yaqin went to see Shen Qinglan at the Shen Family, Shen Jun Ze personally went to the Lu Family to look for Lu Jincai.
The door of the Lu Family was firmly closed. He knocked for a long time without response, so he could only wait outside. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to call Lu Jincai, but the man simply wasn’t picking up, and eventually, he even turned off his phone.
He waited outside the door for a long time, and just as he began to get impatient, Lu Jincai finally returned from outside.
