Chapter 293: 293. Furious (15 more updates)
"Your phone is ringing," Hengyi said, and Qinglan then noticed her phone screen was flashing. She had set her phone to silent mode and forgotten about it.
It was a call from Enxi. Qinglan answered, having stopped avoiding mentioning her connections with Enxi and others ever since she came clean about her identity to Hengyi.
"An, I’ve heard about the gallery from Daniel, and I took the liberty of investigating that woman Catherine, and guess what I found?"
Qinglan did not speak; she believed Enxi would tell her regardless.
"This Catherine is so arrogant not only because her own family is prominent in Xueli City but also because her mother used to be the sister of a mafia leader, who kept his sister well-protected, and few outside knew of their relationship."
It’s no wonder Catherine was so arrogant and domineering.
Enxi spoke disdainfully, "Catherine is no good person. Although she could be considered a rising star in the art world, she is very jealous. Whenever there are young artists of her age more talented than her, she gets jealous and never allows them chances to succeed."
Catherine was a few years older than Qinglan, and Qinglan not only surpassed her in looks but had also won prestigious international awards at a young age. Furthermore, with Frank frequently praising Qinglan, it was odd for Catherine not to feel jealous.
"An, what do you think about me teaching her a lesson?" Enxi suggested enthusiastically. She had been dealing with too many annoying issues lately, and with Mrs. Jin’s matters still unresolved and weighing on her mind, it seemed perfect to have someone to unleash her frustrations on.
Qinglan was somewhat speechless; why did everyone around her always turn to violence so quickly? "Not for now." If Catherine were to get into trouble now, it would surely be blamed on her. Although she wasn’t concerned and feared nothing, she just wanted to spend the coming days with Hengyi, enjoying their time together, without wasting energy on irrelevant people.
"Oh," Enxi replied, slightly disappointed but she did not say more, just in case she disrupted Qinglan’s plans.
The next morning, when Qinglan woke up, she did not see Hengyi. As she sat up, she saw Hengyi coming in from outside, "What are you doing on the balcony in such cold weather?"
Hengyi smiled, "I just took a call, and was worried about waking you."
Qinglan tried to touch his hand but saw Hengyi step back, avoiding her, "I’m cold to the touch, don’t touch me."
"I’m not a porcelain doll," Qinglan said, obediently lying down and wrapping herself up snugly in the blankets.
"What would you like for breakfast? I’ll make it."
"Aunt Zhao surely has already prepared it; just check what there is. I’d like to have plain porridge," Qinglan requested, having grown tired of the nutritious porridge she had been eating for days.
Ever since the day they returned from the prenatal checkup and Old Sir Fu learned from the doctor that Qinglan was slightly underweight and needed more nutrition, he had tasked Aunt Zhao to provide Qinglan with tonic foods and various nutritious porridges or soups three times a day.
"Aunt Zhao, do we have plain porridge this morning?" Hengyi walked into the kitchen, which was filled with the aroma of food.
"There’s no plain porridge, only vegetable porridge. I changed it because Qinglan was tired of the nutritious porridge. But if you want plain porridge, I can cook some now."
"No need, vegetable porridge will do," Hengyi said, ladling porridge into a bowl. Just as he took the porridge out of the kitchen, he saw Qinglan coming downstairs, "Is vegetable porridge okay for breakfast?"
Qinglan nodded; she wasn’t picky, as long as it wasn’t the nutritious porridge.
"Where’s grandfather?" Seeing no sign of Old Sir Fu, Qinglan asked.
"The old sir got up early and left, saying he was going to play chess with Old Sir Shen," Aunt Zhao just came out and heard the conversation.
Qinglan smiled, it looked like Old Sir Fu’s passion for chess had been rekindled.
"Aunt Zhao, I don’t want pigeon soup for lunch today," Qinglan told Aunt Zhao as she finished her bowl of porridge.
Aunt Zhao laughed, "I knew you were tired of it. I’ve prepared chicken soup for lunch; it’s made from hens that the old sir personally had brought from the countryside, reared for years, it’s very good for you, so try to drink more at lunch."
Qinglan: ...Is there a difference between pigeon soup and chicken soup? She actually just didn’t want soup at all at that moment. She glanced at Hengyi and received a reassuring look from him.
"Aunt Zhao, later I’d like to take Qinglan to see her aunt and uncle. We won’t be back for lunch, and I thought we’d go see a movie tonight and eat out," Hengyi said.
Aunt Zhao was taken aback, "What about the chicken soup I specifically made for Qinglan?"
"It’s okay, just keep it. We’ll have it as a late-night snack when we get back."
Aunt Zhao thought about it, then nodded, "Alright, I’ll keep it simmering on a low heat in the stove. Cooking it for a few more hours will make it even more flavorful."
Qinglan breathed a sigh of relief, barely escaping another lunch of soup. Hengyi watched her, amused by her almost battle-stressed reaction.
Shen Qinglan gave him a look that said "you don’t understand". She wasn’t picky, but she couldn’t endure having similar meals every single day.
After finishing the meal, Shen Qinglan hastily left the Fu Family with Fu Hengyi, "It’s just a bowl of soup; why did you have to look so scared?" Fu Hengyi teased her.
Shen Qinglan shot him a glance, "If you had to eat the same thing three times a day, you’d feel the same way. You promised to have chicken soup tonight, and to honor Aunt Zhao’s kindness, you must help me with it."
She pouted slightly, displaying a touch of a little girl’s petulance.
Such an expression was rare on Shen Qinglan’s face. Fu Hengyi’s eyes darkened as his Adam’s apple involuntarily moved. He then shifted his gaze forward.
"Okay, I’ll definitely help you."
Shen Qinglan smiled in satisfaction.
Upon arriving at the Gu Family’s old residence, Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi saw Fu Jingtong helping Gu Bowen with his rehabilitation.
Although Gu Bowen’s legs and arms had been fractured at that time, the condition wasn’t very severe, and he had already begun his rehabilitation.
"Cousin, Uncle."
When Fu Jingtong and Gu Bowen saw the two people who had just walked in, they immediately smiled, "Hengyi and Qinglan are here, have a seat first."
Shen Qinglan stood there, looking at Gu Bowen’s leg, "Uncle, is your leg feeling better?"
Fu Jingtong was supporting Gu Bowen, and they had actually almost finished today’s rehabilitation session. Fu Hengyi stepped forward to help, and after sitting Gu Bowen down on the sofa, Fu Jingtong smiled and said, "It’s much better now; the doctor said that if he continues with the rehabilitation, he should be able to move freely in about two months."
Hearing this, Shen Qinglan was somewhat relieved, knowing that Gu Bowen was injured because of her; if he didn’t recover, she would probably feel guilty for the rest of her life.
Fu Jingtong went into the first-floor restroom and soon came out with a hot towel dampened with water, handing it to Gu Bowen, whose face was covered in sweat from the rehabilitation.
This was the first time Shen Qinglan saw such a caring side of Fu Jingtong, and observing the couple’s interaction, she felt a stirring in her heart.
"Uncle, I owe you an apology for the car accident," Shen Qinglan began.
Gu Bowen waved his hand, "You can’t blame yourself for this, no need for guilt."
Fu Jingtong also added, "Yes, Qinglan, even without you, the Gu and Lin families would still be competitors. Lin Hao has extreme thoughts; a clash was inevitable sooner or later. You shouldn’t dwell on it."
Knowing they were trying to comfort her, Shen Qinglan merely smiled and didn’t further comment, as doing so would seem too distant.
Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi gave the things they brought to Fu Jingtong, who lightly scolded, "Bringing so many things to your aunt’s house, being so formal with your aunt, are you trying to annoy me?"
Fu Hengyi smiled, "All these are prepared by Qinglan for Uncle. We wanted to visit a few days ago but had to take a sudden trip out. We only got to come today."
After setting everything up, Fu Jingtong spoke to Shen Qinglan, "I’ll let it go this time, but if you do this again, your aunt really will get angry."
Shen Qinglan nodded with a smile.
Gu Bowen, recalling the news he saw this morning, looked at Shen Qinglan and asked, "Qinglan, did the police mention the reason behind the fire at Daniel’s gallery?" The news only mentioned the gallery fire and that Qinglan’s paintings were destroyed, without stating that it was arson.
Shen Qinglan spoke calmly, "It was arson, but the police are still investigating. They will call us once they have results."
What Shen Qinglan didn’t know was that, due to the gallery being burnt down and her paintings destroyed, both old gentlemen were extremely furious. They had each made calls to the police chief to "inquire" about the incident. The police chief was now taking the matter very seriously and was working overtime to investigate the instigator. Indeed, the police had found a clue and had already identified a suspect, but lacked evidence for the instigation, so they had not yet taken action.

On the other hand, Catherine was in a hotel room thinking about how to create an opportunity to meet with Fu Hengyi when she received a phone call from a man, "Miss, madam asks you to return home immediately."
Catherine, clearly reluctant, replied, "Tell my mother that I still have unfinished business here. I’ll see her once I’ve sorted things out."
"Miss, madam said if you don’t return by tomorrow, then don’t bother coming back ever."
Upon hearing this, Catherine’s face paled, "Understood, I’m heading back right now." After hanging up, Catherine was so angry that she smashed her own phone. Her mother was an extremely cold person, never showing a good expression even to her. When she was a child, she even doubted whether she was really her mother’s child due to her attitude, but the DNA test results left her disappointed as she was indeed her biological daughter.
Her mother was very domineering, even her father had to listen to her at home. Naturally, Catherine could not defy her mother’s wishes. Packing her stuff, she rushed to the airport.
