No matter what Old Sir Shen said, Shen Qinglan just knelt silently, her gaze determined, not moving at all.
Old Sir Shen looked at his stubborn granddaughter, feeling both angry and pained. He could guess the reason behind her actions, and because he knew, he couldn’t agree to it even more.
He couldn’t let Shen Qinglan sacrifice her lifetime happiness just to let her grandmother leave in peace. Fu Hengyi was indeed good, and if Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi were marrying for love, he would definitely not object and would even wholeheartedly support, but in the current situation, absolutely not.
When Shen Junyu walked in, this was the scene he saw: Old Sir Shen sitting on the bed, angry, while his sister knelt on the ground, unmoving.
"Grandfather, what happened?" Shen Junyu was startled, thinking Shen Qinglan had done something wrong, which was why their grandfather was angry.
Neither the grandfather nor the granddaughter spoke.
"Grandfather, Lanlan is young. If she did something that upset you, please don’t hold it against her. The floor is so hard; if she kneels for too long, her knees will be ruined. Can you let her up first, please?"
Shen Junyu didn’t know what had happened, but he could be sure Shen Qinglan must have done something, otherwise, Old Sir Shen wouldn’t treat her like this.
"Am I the one not letting her up? She’s the one who doesn’t want to get up." Old Sir Shen finally spoke, but his tone was somewhat angry and exasperated.
"Lanlan, apologize to Grandfather."
Shen Qinglan didn’t move. No one could change her mind once she decided on something.
"Shen Qinglan, are you set on this?" Old Sir Shen scolded, glaring at Shen Qinglan, wishing to go up and hit her a few times to wake her up, yet he couldn’t bear to.
"Yes," Shen Qinglan answered without hesitation.
"Fine, fine, if you want to kneel, then kneel as long as you like."
"Grandfather." Shen Junyu spoke up.
"You get out." Old Sir Shen glared at his grandson, pointing at the door.
Shen Junyu glanced at Shen Qinglan kneeling on the ground, "Grandfather, no matter what mistake sister made, she’s still a girl, and now that grandmother is in the hospital, you..."
"Get out," Old Sir Shen roared.
Shen Junyu had no choice but to leave the room. Everyone in the family was currently at the hospital, so even if he wanted to find someone to help, there was no one. The main issue was he didn’t know what had occurred.
Shen Qinglan knelt for a whole night, and Old Sir Shen didn’t sleep all night either. His most beloved granddaughter knelt there, begging him to let her marry a man she didn’t like; how could he sleep?
As dawn broke, the sun rose higher, drawing nearer to noon. She had agreed to meet Fu Hengyi at the Civil Affairs Bureau entrance at twelve.
Shen Qinglan felt somewhat anxious, but there was no trace of it on her face. After kneeling all night, her knees were already numb.
"You’ve really steeled your heart, haven’t you?" Old Sir Shen couldn’t calm his anger.
"Please, Grandfather, grant my wish."
Old Sir Shen put his hands on his hips, paced back and forth in the room, breathing heavily. After a while, he threw a dark red booklet in front of Shen Qinglan, "Take it."
Shen Qinglan picked up the booklet from the ground and bowed to Old Sir Shen. Shen Qinglan was proud; she had never knelt or bowed to anyone before.
This was the first time, and she did so willingly, because she had hurt the heart of the old man who genuinely loved her.
"Shen Qinglan, this is a decision you made yourself. Even if you regret it later, don’t come to me complaining."
"Thank you, Grandfather."
Old Sir Shen closed his eyes, unwilling to look at the person on the ground any longer, and weakly waved his hand.
Shen Qinglan stood up. As soon as she moved, a sharp pain shot through her knees, and she fell to the ground, recovering.
Old Sir Shen observed clearly, wanting to help her up, but he turned his back instead.
Shen Qinglan waited for the pain to pass, then slowly stood up and moved towards the door. She walked very slowly, almost inching forward, yet her back was straight.
Old Sir Shen watched his granddaughter’s departing figure and sighed deeply.
**
At the entrance of the Civil Affairs Bureau, Shen Qinglan arrived to find Fu Hengyi already waiting there.
"There’s still time to regret," Fu Hengyi spoke lightly, his eyes fixed on Shen Qinglan’s face.
"Let’s go."
Shen Qinglan walked in first.
Fu Hengyi followed with a slight raise of his foot.
When they came out again, two red booklets were in their hands.
Shen Qinglan followed behind Fu Hengyi, and neither of them spoke.
"Get in the car." Fu Hengyi opened the car door.
Shen Qinglan got in without asking where he was taking her.
The car stopped at City First Hospital. Fu Hengyi got out, with Shen Qinglan still following behind him.
Up until the seventh floor, when the elevator opened, Fu Hengyi stepped forward and held Shen Qinglan’s hand.
Shen Qinglan struggled.
"If you don’t want the family to worry, cooperate a little." Fu Hengyi bent down, whispered in Shen Qinglan’s ear.
Shen Qinglan stopped moving, allowing Fu Hengyi to lead her to Granny Shen’s hospital room.
In the room, besides the Shen Family, Old Sir Fu was also present. Everyone was surprised to see the two entering hand in hand.
The most shocked was Shen Xitong, still sitting in a wheelchair, her face pale as she looked at their intertwined hands, her grip on the wheelchair handle turning her knuckles white.
Fu Hengyi held Shen Qinglan’s hand as they approached Granny Shen’s bed. "Grandmother, I’m sorry I’m late."
Granny Shen looked at them, understanding something, then turned to Old Sir Shen. He nodded with a smile.
Granny Shen relaxed and waved Fu Hengyi over, "You and our Lanlan are together?"
Fu Hengyi nodded, "Yes, Grandmother. To be precise, Qinglan and I are married. We got our certificate this morning." Fu Hengyi’s voice was gentle.
Even though Granny Shen was prepared in her heart, she was startled, looking at Fu Hengyi with involuntary sternness, then turned to the others, "All of you, out. Hengyi stays."
"Grandmother," Shen Qinglan spoke.
Granny Shen smiled, "I just want a few words with Hengyi, won’t bully him. Go on out."
The group left one after another.
Only Granny Shen and Fu Hengyi remained in the room.
**
In the corridor, Shen Qian looked at Shen Qinglan, with questioning eyes, "Qinglan, what’s going on? When did you and Hengyi get together?"
"We’ve been together for some time. The last time Hengyi was on leave, we saw each other, then met a few more times, felt good, and tried dating for a while. We both felt alright, and Hengyi is not young, so we decided to marry." Shen Qinglan spoke lightly.
Old Sir Fu and Old Sir Shen, who knew the truth, couldn’t help but twitch their lips.
"You’re lying," Shen Xitong interrupted loudly. "You’re just lying. You’ve known Hengyi for less than three months, and the times you’ve met can be counted on one hand. Where did the feelings come from?" Her lips trembled slightly, obviously unable to believe they were married.
