Chapter 231. Ask for forgiveness (Second update)

Chapter 231: 231. Ask for forgiveness (Second update)

After attending the funeral of Yu Xiaoxuan’s parents, Shen Qinglan suddenly missed Fu Hengyi terribly and took a cab straight to the Beijing Military Region. It was raining, and Shen Qinglan got out of the cab to wait for Fu Hengyi to come and meet her in the rain.

When Fu Hengyi saw Shen Qinglan standing in the rain, his face immediately darkened. He handed her an umbrella and began to reprimand her, "Why didn’t you bring an umbrella when you went out? What if you get sick? Doctor Zhong said that you can’t catch a cold right now..."

Suddenly, Shen Qinglan hugged Fu Hengyi’s waist. Fu Hengyi stopped talking, sensing that something was off with her emotions, "What’s wrong, Qinglan, did something happen?"

"Yu Xiaoxuan’s parents died in a car accident," Shen Qinglan said. Fu Hengyi was silent but hugged Shen Qinglan tightly.

When Shen Qinglan had calmed down a bit, Fu Hengyi let her go and took her back to the dorm. After Shen Qinglan had taken a hot bath, Fu Hengyi had already made ginger soup.

"Drink the ginger soup first; you can’t catch a cold." Fu Hengyi pointed to the ginger soup on the table and spoke. Shen Qinglan obediently took the ginger soup and drank it in one go.

"Do you feel better now?" Fu Hengyi asked in a soft voice.

Shen Qinglan nodded her head, "I’m fine now. It’s just that I suddenly thought of Grandma, so I got a bit sentimental. Fu Hengyi, do you think I’m becoming more and more sentimental?" she said with a self-deprecating tone. She truly felt that ever since she married Fu Hengyi, she had become sentimental, easily falling into bouts of melancholic musings.

Fu Hengyi chuckled, "You’re overthinking it again. It’s not like that at all. I’m very happy that you are willing to share your feelings with me. Don’t think too much; have a good sleep."

Shen Qinglan nodded. She had indeed been exhausted from handling the funeral for Yu Xiaoxuan’s parents these past few days. She lay down on the bed and quickly fell asleep.

Fu Hengyi waited until she was asleep before calling Han Yi to understand what had happened, and then he came back in to tuck her in.

When Shen Qinglan woke up, she saw Fu Hengyi sitting at the desk, typing away furiously on his computer. When he saw her wake up, he closed his laptop, "Awake? Are you hungry?"

Shen Qinglan didn’t answer his question but instead asked, "Am I getting in the way of your work?"

Fu Hengyi shook his head, "No, I was just drafting a physical training program. For dinner, do you want noodles or rice?"

"I want zhajiang noodles."

"Alright, wait a moment." Fu Hengyi went straight into the kitchen.

In a short while, Fu Hengyi served two bowls of noodles. After eating, Shen Qinglan didn’t stay at the Military Region, but went directly to the Shen Family home. As soon as she arrived, she saw Shen Rang’s family.

"Sister-in-law, has dad woken up yet?" Shen Rang asked Chu Yunrong, who was coming down the stairs.

"Not yet," Chu Yunrong replied, smiling slightly upon seeing Shen Qinglan, "Qinglan."

Shen Qinglan greeted Chu Yunrong first and then turned to Shen Rang’s family, "Second Uncle." She glanced at Lu Yaqin and called out, "Second Aunt."

Shen Qinglan’s address made Lu Yaqin’s eyes well up with tears; she was the first in the Shen family to acknowledge her status, "Ah." She tugged at Shen Junze beside her, who reluctantly called out "Cousin."

Shen Qinglan didn’t spare him a glance. For the prime culprit who had driven her grandfather to the hospital, she naturally had no pleasant expression.

"Mom, I’m going to check on Grandpa," Shen Qinglan said before heading upstairs. Shen Junze looked unhappy, glaring fiercely at Shen Qinglan’s retreating figure.

Old Sir Shen wasn’t really asleep; he just didn’t want to see Shen Rang’s family. He smiled when he saw Shen Qinglan, "Lanlan, come and sit beside Grandpa."

Shen Qinglan sat down beside Old Sir Shen, "Grandpa, how are you feeling today?"

Old Sir Shen smiled affectionately, "Grandpa is fine, recovering well. How is your friend?"

"The family affairs have been settled, but the incident has hit her hard. She will probably need some time to recover."

Old Sir Shen sighed, "Visit her when you have time." He remembered Yu Xiaoxuan, a happy and vivacious girl; who could have known such a tragedy would befall her.

"I will," Shen Qinglan replied, fixing Old Sir Shen’s blankets, "Grandpa, about Second Uncle..."

Shen Qinglan only said two words when Old Sir Shen waved his hand dismissively, "Don’t mention him. Tell them to leave."

Shen Qinglan pursed her lips slightly; she knew that the more Old Sir Shen acted this way, the more he actually cared about Second Uncle, "Grandpa, they’ve finally come back, are you really not willing to see them?"

"Tell them to go," Old Sir Shen said, turning his gaze away and looking at his wife’s photo on the wall, his voice faint.

When Shen Qinglan went downstairs, Shen Rang’s family was still there, "Second Uncle, Grandpa said he doesn’t want to see you. You can leave now."

The light in Shen Rang’s eyes dimmed completely. Lu Yaqin, seeing her husband’s demeanor, felt very sad and regretted even more that she had agreed to leave Beijing with Shen Rang. If she hadn’t been with Shen Rang back then, he wouldn’t be so upset now.

Lu Yaqin stood up, looking at Chu Yunrong with a pleading face, "Sister-in-law, please let me go up and see Old Sir Shen. I just want to say a few words to him. I promise it won’t upset him, is that okay?"

Chu Yunrong’s face showed difficulty.

"Okay," Shen Qinglan spoke, and Lu Yaqin’s face lit up with joy, gratefully glancing at Shen Qinglan.

"Lanlan, why did you bring her here?" Old Sir Shen’s face turned cold immediately upon seeing Lu Yaqin.

Lu Yaqin stood there at a loss, looking at Old Sir Shen, then suddenly dropped to her knees with a thud, "Old Sir Shen, all the faults and mistakes are mine, please stop blaming Shen Rang."

Shen Qinglan did not expect her to do this; her brow lightly furrowed, disliking the act of people casually kneeling as a gesture. Old Sir Shen’s brow also creased, "Get up."

Lu Yaqin didn’t get up, "Old Sir Shen, I know that I’m not worthy of Shen Rang. If it wasn’t for me back then, Shen Rang would have had a bright future. Everything is my fault, I was wrong, I am so sorry. But now, if there’s blame to be cast, blame me. Shen Rang has not had an easy time either. Although he has never come back, he has always been thinking of you all. Old Sir Shen, Shen Rang doesn’t have much time left. Please forgive him. I don’t want him to leave this world with regrets." Tears streamed down Lu Yaqin’s face.

Old Sir Shen and Shen Qinglan’s expressions changed when they heard this, and Old Sir Shen stared sharply at Lu Yaqin, "What do you mean by your words just now? What do you mean Shen Rang doesn’t have much time left?"

Lu Yaqin cried even harder, "Shen Rang was diagnosed with liver cancer six months ago. The cancer cells have already spread. The doctors say he doesn’t have much time left."

Old Sir Shen’s face turned instantly pale; had he not been sitting on the bed, he might have been unable to stand. Shen Qinglan quickly stepped forward to pat Old Sir Shen’s chest, "Grandfather."

It took a while for Old Sir Shen to catch his breath, "Is what you just said really true?" He still couldn’t believe it.

Lu Yaqin nodded through her tears, wishing she were lying to Old Sir Shen if it could be so.

Old Sir Shen fell silent, and after a long time, he waved his hand, "Let him come in."

Upon hearing this, Lu Yaqin’s face lit up with happiness, "Thank you Old Sir Shen, thank you."

When Shen Rang learned that Old Sir Shen was finally willing to see him, he hurried upstairs. Old Sir Shen had already moved from the bed to a wheelchair, turning his back to him.

Only Old Sir Shen and Shen Rang were in the room, "Dad," Shen Rang called out.

"Kneel down," Old Sir Shen commanded, catching Shen Rang off guard.

"I’m telling you to kneel down," Old Sir Shen’s tone turned severe, and Shen Rang hesitated for a moment before finally kneeling.

Old Sir Shen turned around to face the kneeling Shen Rang, "Do you know where you have gone wrong?"

"Dad, I have been unfilial. I should never have left for twenty years, abandoning you and Mom."

Old Sir Shen regarded him with a piercing gaze, "Indeed, you have been unfilial, abandoning your responsibilities just for a woman, forsaking your own family. Shen Rang, is this how I raised you?"

Shen Rang remained silent.

"Shen Rang, look at your mother’s photograph and tell me if you think you’ve lived up to the expectations and teachings your mother and I had for you."

Old Sir Shen pointed to the photograph of his late wife on the wall and said in a low voice.

Shen Rang looked up at the photograph, his eyes reddening, "Dad, I’m sorry."

"You owe me an apology, but you owe your mother even more. She was still calling out for her youngest son at her death, and where were you at that time?"

"Shen Rang, you have been intelligent since you were young, even more outstanding than your elder brother. That’s why I went to Uncle Fu on your behalf, to ask him to marry Jingting to you. But what did you do? You showed up at their house and humiliated Jingting. Proud as she has always been, where could she place her dignity? Where could Uncle Fu place his? Where could your mother and I place ours? You’ve lost all face for Shen Yuanyi!"

Shen Rang was silent, knowing he had indeed wronged Fu Jingtong and owed her an apology, "Dad, I know I owe her. I can’t make it up in this lifetime, but if there’s a next life, I will definitely repay her."

"Next life? Who cares about your next life? Shen Rang, you have wasted the guidance your mother and I gave you."

"Dad, I’m sorry."

Old Sir Shen gasped for breath, "Shen Rang, I’m asking you, why are you coming back now? Is it because you’re dying, so you thought of returning, to let this old man experience the grief of a white-haired man sending off a black-haired one?"

Shen Rang looked up abruptly, his face filled with shock, "Dad, you knew?" After a brief contemplation, he immediately realized it must have been Lu Yaqin who told Old Sir Shen.

"I do know. Shen Rang, you really are filial, remembering to let me have a last look at you, to let me know whether you’re alive or dead."

Shen Rang moved a few steps closer to Old Sir Shen, "Dad, it’s all my fault. You can hit me, you can scold me, but please don’t get angry. Your health can’t take it."
