Chapter 223: 223. Old Sir Shen Hospitalized (Second Update)
"Mom, why did you have to apologize to them? We didn’t do anything wrong. If it weren’t for that old man being so stubborn and not allowing you to be with my dad, you wouldn’t have had to leave your homeland and cross the ocean, and you wouldn’t have been too scared to even return to Beijing all these years. Have you forgotten? You didn’t even get to see your parents for the last time, and it’s all because of that old man," Shen Junze was very dissatisfied, having heard from his mother since he was a child about how the Shen Family did not agree with his parents being together, and he harbored deep resentment about it.
"Shen Junze, shut your mouth," Shen Rang roared, and upon meeting his father’s furious gaze, Shen Junze closed his mouth. If he wasn’t supposed to talk, then he wouldn’t.
Shen Rang looked at Shen Qinglan, "When I left, you were still in your mother’s belly, I didn’t expect you to have grown up so much. Junze is young and ignorant, please don’t hold it against him."
Shen Qinglan’s cold gaze swept over Shen Junze, "If the child is not taught, it’s the father’s fault."
Shen Rang felt very embarrassed by Shen Qinglan’s statement, and Shen Junze, upon hearing it, was quite unhappy, but his mother kept pulling on him, preventing him from speaking up.
"Grandpa Fu was diagnosed with high blood pressure, and the doctor said to try to keep his emotions from fluctuating too much. If there’s nothing else, you should leave," Shen Qinglan said, ushering them out. She was not usually an aggressive person, but she had just been to the graveyard to visit Granny Shen, and her emotions were already low. Seeing Old Sir Shen get angry earlier, especially seeing Shen Junze talk back to Old Sir Shen, Shen Qinglan was in a particularly bad mood.
Shen Junyu looked at Shen Rang, "Second Uncle, Grandpa’s health has indeed not been good lately. Maybe it’s better for you to leave first. Have you found a place to stay? If not, I can help you book a hotel."
"No need, we’ve already found a place to stay. Since Grandpa’s health isn’t good, we’ll leave now and come back another day to see him."
Shen Junyu stood up to see the guests out.
"Jun Yu, where is Granny buried? I would like to visit her," Shen Rang said.
After thinking for a moment, Shen Junyu gave an address. Shen Rang, with a grateful expression, left. On his way out, the woman walked at the back and said sorry to Shen Junyu. Shen Junze, however, didn’t even glance at Shen Junyu and merely snorted before getting into the car.
Shen Junyu turned around and saw Shen Qinglan standing at the door, her face cold and indifferent. He gave a helpless smile, "Are you still angry?"
"No," Shen Qinglan took off her headpiece, annoyed rather than angry, simply discontented with their attitude towards Grandpa.
"Alright, didn’t we say we’re having lunch with Grandpa Fu at noon? Let’s go back now. I’ll be here for Grandpa."
After thinking for a moment, Shen Qinglan nodded and headed towards the Fu Family’s home. Aunt Zhao had already prepared lunch and was waiting for Shen Qinglan to return.
"The girl Qinglan is back, so let’s start the meal," Old Sir Fu said with a smile upon seeing Shen Qinglan. His health had recovered very well, except for his right hand being temporarily unusable, and there were no after-effects from the injury on his head, which was fortunate.
"Grandpa, you shouldn’t wait for me for meals in the future," Shen Qinglan said, feeling uneasy about making the old man wait for her.
Old Sir Fu didn’t mind and beckoned Shen Qinglan to sit down, pushing a bowl of soup in front of her with a smile, "Girl Qinglan, this is a rich soup that I had Xiao Zhao specially prepare for you. It’s very nourishing and good for the body. You’ve been drinking herbal medicine lately and have lost weight. Don’t worry, I asked the doctor about this soup, and it doesn’t conflict with the herbal medicine you’re taking."
"Thank you, Grandpa and Aunt Zhao," Shen Qinglan expressed her gratitude. Previously, when Old Sir Shen was in the hospital, she hadn’t been taking her herbal medicine on time, and it was only after Fu Hengyi handed the medicine over to Aunt Zhao that the family learned Shen Qinglan was taking medicine. Fu Hengyi had explained it was for regulating her health, but he hadn’t gone into specifics.
The soup was clear, and the oil had been skimmed off. Shen Qinglan tried a sip and found it tasted very good.
"Grandpa, where’s Aunt Jingting?" Shen Qinglan asked after she took a sip of soup, noticing Fu Jingtong’s absence.
Since Old Sir Shen had been discharged from the hospital, Fu Jingtong had requested a transfer back to the country and was now working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, coming home daily to accompany Old Sir Shen for meals.
"She said she had a meeting at noon and wouldn’t come back," Old Sir Fu answered, now using his left hand as his right was inconvenient. Fortunately, in his youth, he had been known as an ambidextrous gunman, skilled with both hands, otherwise, he would need to be fed by someone else now.
After finishing the meal, Shen Qinglan took a walk with Old Sir Fu in the courtyard until he went upstairs for his afternoon nap, then left the residence.
Returning to Jiangxin Garden, Shen Qinglan was cleaning when her phone rang with an unfamiliar number. She answered and her expression immediately changed. Hanging up, she rushed downstairs.
"What on earth happened? Why was Grandpa brought to the hospital?" Shen Qinglan rushed to the hospital and at the entrance to the emergency room, she saw the family of three, Shen Rang, as well as Shen Junyu waiting outside.
Shen Junyu’s face was very cold. On seeing Shen Qinglan, his face did not bear the usual gentle smile. "Grandpa suddenly vomited blood and fainted. He’s still being resuscitated."
Shen Qinglan’s icy gaze swept over the three members of the Shen Rang family. Shen Rang and his wife’s faces were pale, and in addition to the paleness, there was fear on Shen Junze’s face.
Upon meeting Shen Qinglan’s gaze, he immediately cried out, "It has nothing to do with me. I just said a few words. Who could have known he would vomit blood? It really has nothing to do with me."
Shen Qinglan’s expression changed slightly as she stepped forward, grabbed his collar, and easily lifted him up. "What did you say to my grandpa?"
The woman, that is Lu Yaqin, stood up, "Um, Qinglan, let go of him first. Let’s talk this out calmly." She didn’t dare to pull on Shen Qinglan and could only stand by the side and say dryly.
Shen Qinglan glanced at her coldly and let go of her grip, but her eyes were fixed directly on Shen Junze. Speaking slowly and deliberately, she asked, "Tell me, what exactly did you say to Grandpa?"
Shen Junze shrunk his neck, complaining, "I went with my parents to see Granny, but who knew we’d run into the old... Grandpa. He immediately told my dad to get out. I couldn’t swallow my anger and said a few harsh words to him, then he vomited blood."
"What did you say?" Shen Qinglan asked, her tone icy cold.
"I didn’t really say much," Shen Junze murmured softly. "I just said that if it weren’t for him forbidding my parents from being together, my dad wouldn’t have left the Shen Family, my Granny wouldn’t have fallen ill, and she wouldn’t have died so early. Her wretched death is all due to his stubbornness; he’s the one to blame..." Toward the end of his speech, Shen Junze’s voice was as quiet as a mosquito’s because Shen Qinglan’s gaze was terrifying.
Lu Yaqin’s face changed upon witnessing such a Shen Qinglan and she started falteringly, "Qinglan, it was wrong of Jun Ze to speak like that, but he was just angry and spoke without thinking. You..."
Before she could finish her sentence, a loud slap echoed in the hallway. Shen Junze’s face turned to one side with a trickle of blood at the corner of his mouth, and soon his whole face swelled up.
Shen Junze was seething with rage. It was the first time he had been hit in his life. However, confronted with Shen Qinglan’s gaze, he dared not say a word, deep down feeling guilty about Old Sir Shen’s condition.
Lu Yaqin, seeing her son slapped, was very heartbroken, but with Old Sir Shen still being resuscitated inside, she didn’t dare say anything in such unclear circumstances.
"You’d better pray that Grandpa is okay, otherwise..." Shen Qinglan’s gaze scanned over each of them, finally resting on Shen Rang.
Shen Rang sat in a chair, silent ever since he arrived at the hospital, and remained indifferent even when his son was struck. He showed no reaction to Shen Qinglan’s words.
"Lanlan, come here." Shen Junyu wrapped an arm around her shoulder and drew her aside. Shen Qinglan remained silent, but her occasional glances toward the operating room were laden with worry.
The door of the operating room opened, and the doctor emerged. Shen Qinglan hurried over, but Shen Rang’s movement was even faster. "Doctor, how is my dad?"
"The old sir is no longer in danger now, but given the major shock he suffered, he will be in a comatose state for the next few days. There are also signs of a minor stroke. As his family, you need to take very careful care of him."
Shen Rang nodded repeatedly in agreement and watched as Old Sir Shen was wheeled out of the operating room and into the ward, following closely behind.
Old Sir Shen was still attached to a ventilator, his eyes tightly shut. Shen Qinglan sat by his bedside, holding the hand not connected to the IV. Old Sir Shen’s hand was wrinkled, with clear age spots on it, but feeling the warmth, Shen Qinglan’s heart was at peace.
Looking at Old Sir Shen, her eyes filled with warmth. "Grandpa, I’m so glad you’re still with us." This was the phrase Shen Qinglan wanted to say the most after seeing Old Sir Shen come out of the operating room. She did not want to lose her Grandpa after Granny, the one who loved her the most.
She sat in silence observing Old Sir Shen, feeling quite different from the last time Chu Yunrong was hospitalized. She couldn’t imagine what she might do if this time Old Sir Shen had not come out of the emergency room.
Only Shen Qinglan was left in the ward; Shen Rang and the others had already been taken outside by Shen Junyu.
"Second Uncle, you can go home first. I’ll let you know when Grandpa wakes up," Shen Junyu spoke politely but also with a sense of estrangement. This incident was caused by Shen Junze, and Shen Junyu found it hard to forget.
