Chapter 216: 216. Visit the Set (Third Update, Includes Benefits Announcement)
Fu Jingtong felt helpless; once Old Sir Fu got fired up, it was tough to reason with him. Shen Qinglan slightly curved her lips, "Grandpa, are you sure you don’t want us to stay with you?"
"Go, go, go, hurry up and go. I just got a head injury, is it really that scary? When I was young, I fought on a battlefield; there’s no injury I haven’t had." Old Sir Fu didn’t take his injury seriously at all.
"Grandpa, you just said that was when you were young," Fu Hengyi responded quite naturally.
Old Sir Fu glared, "Are you saying I’m old? Fu Hengyi, let me tell you, I just look old. Actually, my body is still in good shape, once I’m out of the hospital, I can still go up the mountains to fight tigers."
"Grandpa, tigers are a nationally protected species, you shouldn’t break the law knowingly," Fu Hengyi slowly delivered his line, puffing Old Sir Fu up in anger who then turned to look at Shen Qinglan. "Qinglan, look at this kid, is he talking sense? I’m a patient here."
"Now you remember you’re a patient? Who was it just now saying he could go up the mountains and fight tigers?" Fu Hengyi continued in his unruffled manner, knowing that Old Sir Fu was fine aside from needing some rest; this put him at ease.
"Talking about fighting tigers?" Gu Yang came in, overhearing the last part of the conversation and asked curiously.
"Grandpa, are you really going up the mountains to fight tigers? Please don’t wear yourself out. When you got sick, my mother scolded my little sister-in-law something fierce," said Gu Yang as he plopped down on a chair, grabbed a pear from the fruit basket, and, without washing it, wiped it on his clothes and took a bite.
Old Sir Fu fixed his gaze on him, "What do you mean by that last comment? What’s this about your mother scolding Qinglan?"
Gu Yang gagged, internally cursing as he realized he’d accidentally spilled the beans. He glanced at Fu Jingtong, his eyes pleading, "What I meant was, Mom, I didn’t mean to rat you out."
"Grandpa, don’t listen to Gu Yang’s nonsense. My aunt and I are getting along well. By the way, Grandpa, I’m going out for a meal with friends later with Fu Hengyi. What would you like us to bring back for you?" Shen Qinglan casually shifted the topic.
"You guys go ahead, don’t need to bring anything back. Since you’ve made plans with friends, don’t be late and make them wait," Old Sir Fu shooed them away.
It was supposed to be an excuse, but since it had been mentioned already, Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi had no choice but to stand up and leave. They walked out of the hospital, with Fu Hengyi asking Shen Qinglan, "Where are we going now?"
Shen Qinglan was also a bit lost, as she had just made up the excuse on the spot.
"How about we go see Yu Xiaoxuan and also call Han Yi? That way, I can’t be accused of not giving Han Yi a chance. I’m basically creating an opportunity here," Shen Qinglan suggested.
Fu Hengyi didn’t mind and went to start the car.
Inside the hospital room, once Shen Qinglan and the others had left, Old Sir Fu’s face lost its smile and he turned to Fu Jingtong, "What exactly did Gu Yang mean by what he said just now?"
Gu Yang, feeling dizzy, knew Old Sir Fu was still hung up on that conversation. Looking at his serious expression, Gu Yang wished he could smack himself.
"About that, Grandpa, I was just blabbering nonsense earlier. My mom and my sister-in-law get along great. How could she scold her?" Gu Yang explained dryly.
Old Sir Fu glanced at him, "I didn’t ask you. Jingting, you tell me."
Fu Jingtong didn’t hold anything back and explained everything. After hearing it, Old Sir Fu sighed, "Jingting, you were indeed wrong in this matter. Qinglan didn’t do anything wrong, you shouldn’t have spoken to her like that."
"Dad, I know, and I’ve already apologized to Qinglan. I was just displacing my anger. I hate myself for being so headstrong and not being there to take good care of you. Dad, don’t worry; from now on, I’ll stay by your side. I’ve already submitted a request to be transferred back home."
"Jingting, do whatever you want to do, don’t worry about this old man," he replied.
"Dad, I was too willful and selfish before. Yun Rong was right, I am just a coward, always running away from things I don’t dare face, pushing my responsibilities onto someone else," she confessed.
Gu Yang appeared to be focused on eating his fruit, but his ears perked up. The more he listened to their conversation, the more confused he became; they talked as if they were speaking in riddles, and he couldn’t understand at all.
"Mom, Grandpa, what exactly happened back then?" Unable to make heads or tails of their conversation, Gu Yang decided to just ask.
Fu Jingtong didn’t resolve his confusion but stood up instead, "Dad, I’ll go ask Doctor Zhong about your dietary restrictions."
Left in the room with just Old Sir Fu, Gu Yang felt a shiver down his spine from his grandpa’s intense gaze, prompting him to stand up, "Grandpa, I just remembered there’s something I need to take care of at home. I’ll leave now and come visit you another day."
"Stop!" demanded Old Sir Fu assertively, making Gu Yang pause in his tracks. "Grandpa, I really have things to handle."
"Even if you do, you stay right here. I’ve been wanting to ask, what were you doing in the army these past few months?" Having finally caught the opportunity, Old Sir Fu naturally wanted a thorough explanation from Gu Yang.
"I didn’t really do much, just training. All day, every day, just training. I’m really trying my best, Grandpa, I swear," Gu Yang gestured earnestly, holding up three fingers.
Old Sir Fu scoffed, "Gu Yang, do you think your grandfather is senile and easy to fool?"
Gu Yang, with a playful smile on his face, tried to gloss over the matter, "How could that be? My grandfather is the sharpest, how could he possibly be senile?"
"Hmph," Old Sir Fu snorted coldly, "Someone even complained to me on the phone about you, you really make me proud, always ranking last in every project!"
"Grandfather, it’s a misunderstanding," Gu Yang defended himself, "It was only in the beginning when I wasn’t accustomed to military life, so my performance was poor. But I have worked hard since then. If you don’t believe me, you can call and ask, my current scores are all above passing, although not yet excellent, but I will continue to improve."
Old Sir Fu deeply sighed, knowing well about Gu Yang’s recent performances, "Gu Yang, your grandfather knows you dislike being a soldier, but you can’t waste your life away. As a man, you have responsibilities on your shoulders. Your father is already getting old, do you really want to worry him for the rest of his life?"
Old Sir Fu’s earnest demeanor made Gu Yang stop smiling and fall silent. These words had been said by Hengyi before, but at that time, Gu Yang had not understood. As for now, he still hadn’t figured out what path he wanted to take for his future.
"Grandfather, give me some time, I will think it over clearly. During this time, I will work hard and definitely not disgrace you."
Seeing that he understood, Old Sir Fu felt quite relieved. This was his daughter’s only son, and he naturally hoped for the best for him.
***********
"Little sister-in-law, what brings you to call me today?" Han Yi was surprised to receive a call from Shen Qinglan, as she hadn’t been contacting him much recently.
"Fu Hengyi and I are going to the film set to visit Yu Xiaoxuan, do you want to come?"
Han Yi curled his lip, "Why would I go see that girl?" That girl was just a heartless thing. If he didn’t call her, she wouldn’t bother calling him.
"If you don’t want to come, never mind. I heard Yu Xiaoxuan is currently collaborating with Andre, and Andre is her top idol," Shen Qinglan added lightly before hanging up.
"Wait, little sister-in-law, I haven’t seen Hengyi in a long time either, it would be good to meet up."
Shen Qinglan slightly curled her lips and gave out an address.
"Why are you helping him now, didn’t you use to dislike him getting close to your friends?" Hengyi glanced at her and asked.
Shen Qinglan spoke gently, "Han Yi is not that bad."
Han Group mainly operates in media networks. Whether it was popularizing Li Xitong or slandering her, Han Yi played a major role in it.
Also, from several interactions, Shen Qinglan realized that Han Yi was not as reckless and dissipated as he appeared. Perhaps he was once fickle, but since meeting Yu Xiaoxuan, no rumors about him had been heard, indicating that once truly moved, he is devoted.
Shen Qinglan was naturally good at judging people and grew more understanding and supportive of Han Yi.
"I thought you didn’t really like him," said Hengyi, noting that Shen Qinglan always treated Han Yi indifferently, whereas she was quite nice to Gu Yang.
"It’s not about liking or disliking. I just don’t like anyone using my friends for fun."
Hengyi smiled and said no more.
Han Yi arrived quickly, and seeing the car parked by the roadside, he rolled down the window and whistled, "Little sister-in-law. Hengyi."
When the three of them arrived at the film set, the crew had not yet wrapped up. Shen Qinglan found a spot to sit down. The director was still Wang Bin. This was Wang Bin’s second collaboration with Yu Xiaoxuan. After their previous online drama, Wang Bin was very satisfied with Yu Xiao Xuan and took up this script when Linda approached him.
Seeing Shen Qinglan again, Wang Bin was happy and greeted her, "Miss Shen, it’s nice to see you again."
"Director Wang, long time no see," Shen Qinglan smiled faintly.
"I have always regretted not being able to collaborate with Miss Shen last time," Wang Bin said, still regretful about Shen Qinglan declining his invitation as he hadn’t found a suitable actress for that screenplay even now.
Shen Qinglan smiled silently.
"Miss Shen, are you here to see Xiao Xuan?" Recognizing that Shen Qinglan didn’t want to elaborate, Director Wang tactfully changed the subject. Shen Qinglan nodded, "Director Wang, you go ahead with your work, we’ll just wait here for a bit."
After greeting Han Yi and Hengyi, Director Wang left. Hengyi politely nodded to Director Wang, while Han Yi didn’t even glance at him. Since arriving on the set, his gaze hadn’t left Yu Xiaoxuan, watching her laugh heartily next to Andre. Although he knew it was just for the scenes, Han Yi still gritted his teeth so hard they made a grinding sound, wishing he could pull that girl away from the arms of another man.
Han Yi hadn’t seen Yu Xiaoxuan for nearly a week. He wanted to see if she would take the initiative to contact him, but the result was quite disappointing.
Shen Qinglan glanced indifferently at Han Yi, who was gritting his teeth, a hint of a smile flickering in her eyes.
Right after finishing her filming, Yu Xiaoxuan immediately came over, "Qinglan." Her face displayed genuine delight. She was constantly on the move these days, rarely having time to meet with friends, so naturally, she was happy to see her friend.
Shen Qinglan gave a slight smile, "Finished filming?"
Yu Xiaoxuan touched her head, "Not yet, but I don’t have many scenes left today." After all, she wasn’t the leading lady; Yu Xiaoxuan played only the main character’s sister, but as the second female lead, she still had a considerable amount of scenes. This role was the most substantial one she had ever played.
"Hello, Mr. Fu," Yu Xiaoxuan greeted Fu Hengyi politely, and Fu Hengyi responded with a gentle smile.
Then, Yu Xiaoxuan turned to Han Yi, who was internally frustrated. Finally noticing me. However, Yu Xiaoxuan’s next words almost made Han Yi spit blood.
"Han Yi, why are you here again?" Her tone was full of disdain.
Han Yi responded with a scowl, "I came with Hengyi, not to see you."
"Oh." Yu Xiaoxuan replied perfunctorily, but when she saw Han Yi actually turned to talk to Fu Hengyi, ignoring her, a faint sense of loss emerged from within her, although it was so brief she didn’t even notice it herself.
Although Han Yi was talking to Fu Hengyi, his eyes couldn’t help but glance at her. Seeing her indifferent expression, he felt exhausted. He had known early on that this girl was emotionally obtuse, but he had made his feelings so obvious, and yet she hadn’t shown the slightest reaction. Could it be that she really didn’t like him?
"Sometimes, windows need to be broken," Fu Hengyi said softly.
"Xiao Xuan, is this your friend?" A voice, both strange and familiar, came from nearby. The group looked up to see Andre approaching.
"Andre," Yu Xiaoxuan beamed, "Qinglan, let me introduce you. This is Andre, about whom I spoke. He is a good friend of mine, Shen Qinglan."
Andre bowed slightly to Shen Qinglan, performing a gentlemanly gesture, "Beautiful miss, it’s a pleasure to meet you."
Shen Qinglan slightly curled her lips, "Mr. Andre, hello."
The two behaved as if they were strangers meeting for the first time.
Yu Xiaoxuan introduced everyone to Andre, and when it came to Fu Hengyi, she simply said, "This is Qinglan’s husband, Mr. Fu."
It was the first time Andre had formally met Fu Hengyi. Andre shook hands with Fu Hengyi politely, and Fu Hengyi studied Andre, "Mr. Andre, have we met somewhere before?"
Of course, they had met, Andre thought sarcastically, but his face showed nothing. "I think many people might recognize me from posters or commercials."
Andre was an internationally renowned movie star, known to many, so his statement seemed normal to everyone. However, Fu Hengyi knew that wasn’t what he meant; something about this man’s figure felt very familiar to him. They must have met before.
He slightly furrowed his brow, pondering in his mind. Andre internally marveled at the man’s acuity. The last time, at the border, he had only seen his back and hadn’t even had a face-to-face meeting. Meeting now had somehow aroused his suspicions.
"I’m hungry, Hengyi, let’s go eat," Shen Qinglan spoke, interrupting Fu Hengyi’s contemplation.
"Okay." Fu Hengyi always did as Shen Qinglan wished. If his wife was hungry, naturally, feeding her was the priority.
"I wonder if I might have the honor of joining you for lunch?" Andre asked with a smile.
Shen Qinglan covertly gave him a warning look, but Andre pretended not to see it.
"That would be perfectly fine," Han Yi spoke up, walked over to Director Wang to say a word, and then the group departed.
They chose a nearby restaurant. Considering Andre was a foreigner, they initially wanted to find a Western restaurant, but Andre suggested he’d like to try Chinese food, so Han Yi picked a Northern Chinese restaurant, and they booked a private room.
Once inside the private room, Andre finally removed his hat, glasses, and mask, "Thank goodness it’s spring. If it were summer, I might have suffocated."
"Mr. Andre, you’ve been filming abroad, why have you come to Z Country this time?" Fu Hengyi asked warmly.
Was he being targeted? Andre glanced sideways, "Z Country is a beautiful country. I’ve wanted to visit for a long time but never had the chance."
This reason seemed entirely plausible.
Andre, having grown up in the West, wasn’t very proficient with chopsticks, but his motions were graceful and carried an aristocratic elegance.
"Try this." Shen Qinglan placed a chicken wing into Fu Hengyi’s bowl, softly spoke a phrase, and pulled Fu Hengyi out of his reverie. Since earlier, Fu Hengyi had been frequently distracted, lost in thought.
"Thank you, wife." Fu Hengyi picked up the chicken wing, took a bite, and cast aside the strange feeling he had felt since seeing Andre, perhaps he was just overthinking.
"Are Miss Shen and Mr. Fu in a good relationship?" Andre inquired, looking at Fu Hengyi with a probing gaze.
"Their relationship is very good," Yu Xiaoxuan took over, "Mr. Fu treats my Lanlan very well; I wish I could marry a man who loves and cherishes me in the future."
Yu Xiaoxuan had been working with Andre on a film and had become quite familiar with him, so her speech was a lot more casual. However, Han Yi watched this scene, his eyes jumping nervously, silently pondering whether he should do as Fu Hengyi suggested and clarify his feelings to her.
After the meal, Andre and Shen Qinglan said their farewells, "Miss Shen, I hope we can meet again in the future."
Shen Qinglan’s lips slightly pursed, "There will be opportunities."
"Did you know him before?" On the way back, Fu Hengyi asked Shen Qinglan.
"I’ve heard Xiaoxuan mention him a few times; she really likes Andre," Shen Qinglan said tranquilly.
"Seeing him, I always feel a sense of familiarity, and this man doesn’t seem like an ordinary person," Fu Hengyi continued.
A fleeting glint passed quickly through Shen Qinglan’s eyes, "You’ve seen him before?"
Fu Hengyi shook his head, "Only a similar silhouette."
Shen Qinglan somewhat relieved herself. As long as Fu Hengyi didn’t recognize Andre, she decided to give Andre a call and ask him not to appear in front of Fu Hengyi for the time being.
When Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi returned to the hospital, Gu Bowen was there as well, chatting with Old Sir Fu. Seeing them return, he stood up, "Since you’re back now, I’ll take my leave. Dad, I’ll visit you another day."
"Uncle, why are you leaving just as we’ve come back?" Fu Hengyi tried to keep him.
Gu Bowen felt helpless; whenever he came, Jingting would dodge him, unwilling even to share the same space with him.
"I’ve got work at the company, I’ll head back now. Dad, I’m off."
Old Sir Fu waved his hand, "Go on, drive safely."
Watching Gu Bowen leave, Old Sir Fu was filled with helplessness, but this feeling didn’t last long. He waved at Shen Qinglan, "Qinglan, ask the doctor when I can be discharged."
Shen Qinglan responded exasperatedly, "Grandpa, you’ve just had surgery, you need to stay in the hospital for at least a month."
"I can recuperate at home; the smell of disinfectant here is truly unbearable for an old man like me." Old Sir Fu made a pitiful face, clearly disliking the hospital, where he had said goodbye to his son and daughter-in-law.
"Grandpa, you are an elder," Fu Hengyi remarked, and Old Sir Fu glared. This grandson of his was really ungrateful, not caring at all for his own grandfather.
"Grandpa, I recently got a new batch of Yuqian Longjing Tea. Once you’re better, I will brew some for you to taste," Shen Qinglan offered, dangling a temptation.
Old Sir Fu loved tea, especially Yuqian Longjing Tea. Every year, Fu Hengyi would ask someone to buy several pounds, and this year’s new tea had just come on the market, Shen Qinglan had already secured some top-quality Yuqian Longjing for both Old Sir Fu and Old Sir Shen.
Old Sir Fu’s eyes brightened, "Really?"
"When have I ever lied to you?"
Old Sir Fu chuckled, stroking his beard, "Qinglan knows how to take care of me. Once this old man is better, I’ll come to your tea house for tea. Make sure you keep that Yuqian Longjing safe; save it for me."
"As long as Grandpa cooperates well with the doctor’s treatment," Shen Qinglan assured, and Old Sir Fu was content. Being old, he had few pleasures left; if the younger generation showed him respect, why wouldn’t he be happy?
The next day, Fu Hengyi first took Shen Qinglan to Doctor Zhong’s to get medicine, then went to the hospital to accompany Old Sir Fu. Somehow the news of Old Sir Fu’s illness had spread, and there had been a steady stream of visitors these past few days. Old Sir Fu needed rest now, so entertaining these guests fell on Jingting and Fu Hengyi.
Fu Hengyi only had two days off, but due to Old Sir Fu’s accident, he had taken an additional day; however, by the third day, he had to return because he received an urgent mission.
"Fu Hengyi, be careful," Shen Qinglan cautioned as Fu Hengyi turned to get into the car. Although he said nothing, the person who came to pick him up this time was Mu Liancheng, which made Shen Qinglan feel uneasy.
