Chapter 159. The guests have arrived.
Chapter 159: 159. The guests have arrived.
She couldn’t help but feel relieved that her phone wasn’t on her; otherwise, answering that call just now, who knows what Ding Minghui might have thought about her.
Returning to the private room, Shen Qinglan and Shen Junyu were both quietly eating. Fang Tong sat down, and Shen Qinglan passed a bowl of soup to her.
"Just now, I noticed you didn’t eat much. Have a bowl of soup first; it’s good."
Fang Tong smiled and thanked her, but there was no smile in her eyes. Her mind still involuntarily returned to the scene she had witnessed just moments ago.
She mechanically sipped the soup. Shen Qinglan and Shen Junyu both noticed she was distracted, exchanging glances that carried the same confusion.
Looking at the absent-minded Fang Tong, Shen Qinglan thought for a moment and then spoke up, "Brother, has your company been very busy lately?"
Caught off guard by the concern, Shen Junyu was somewhat puzzled, looking at his sister, "It’s almost year-end, naturally there’s more to do, plus the annual meeting is coming up. There’s quite a bit to prepare."
Speaking of the annual meeting, Shen Junyu became enthusiastic, "Our company’s annual meeting is next week. Do you want to come?" Then looking at Fang Tong, "Miss Fang, if you’re interested, you can join as well. The final part includes a raffle; you might want to have some fun."
The annual meeting wasn’t his own planning, but he saw the plan and felt it was quite good.
Fang Tong, seeing the topic shifted to her, finally broke her silence, "I won’t go. It’s almost New Year, and I need to help my mom prepare for the shopping."
Shen Junyu didn’t insist. Looking at Shen Qinglan, seeing her disinterested expression, he smiled, "I’ll give the invitation to Qinglan. If you feel like joining, you’re always welcome."
Shen Qinglan was indifferent but asked an unrelated question, "Can everyone from your company attend this annual meeting?"
Fang Tong pricked up her ears.
"Any employee who has worked at the head office for more than three months can attend. For branch offices, it’s mostly managers and above who get invitations."
Their company’s annual meeting this year was very grand. For this, Shen Junyu had specifically chartered a huge luxury cruise ship as the venue for the event.
"Can we bring family members?" Shen Qinglan asked again, her gaze pausing on Fang Tong.
"Yes."
"Okay, give me the invitation. I’ll take a look when the time comes," Shen Qinglan said.
She had not wanted to go just a moment ago, but now she suddenly changed her mind, which surprised Shen Junyu. However, he was pleased that his sister was willing to participate and agreed with a smile.
The rest of the time, the three of them ate quietly, with no one else speaking.
The meal ended in silence, with Shen Junyu naturally settling the bill. After paying, the three of them walked out of the private room and through the lobby, where Fang Tong glanced in a certain direction subconsciously. Not seeing anyone, she seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.
At the entrance, the three went their separate ways; Shen Junyu returned to the company, and Shen Qinglan, seeing he didn’t have an umbrella, simply gave him hers.
Shen Qinglan got in the car with Fang Tong.
"Should I take you home?" Shen Qinglan asked.
Fang Tong looked out the window without turning her head, "Can I go home with you?"
Shen Qinglan didn’t reply but drove home. Yes, she also brought Fang Tong along.
Once home, Shen Qinglan turned to go to the study, "I have some things to handle. Make yourself at home."
Fang Tong nodded, settling into the sofa without a word.
Shen Qinglan just turned on the computer, transferred money to the teahouse owner’s account, and had a brief conversation before coming out.
When she returned, Fang Tong maintained the same position she was in before, with a wooden expression, wondering about something.
Shen Qinglan entered the kitchen and made her a cup of honey lemon water.
"What are you thinking about?"
Fang Tong came to her senses, took the cup, and placed it on the table, shaking her head, "Nothing much, just some uncontrollable random thoughts."
"You’re probably going to attend the annual meeting with Ding Minghui next week," Shen Qinglan changed the subject, since Fang Tong didn’t want to talk, she wouldn’t ask.
Fang Tong remembered Shen Junyu saying that anyone from the head office could participate in the annual meeting if they had worked there for over three months, and she nodded, "Mm, if he goes."
Fang Tong didn’t stay at Shen Qinglan’s home for long. After Fu Fanghua called, Fang Tong went home.
Because Uncle Li’s family was visiting the next day, Fu Fanghua wanted to take Fang Tong shopping for clothes.
"Mom, I don’t want to go," Fang Tong said, clearly unwilling.
Fu Fanghua didn’t give her a lecture but simply said, "Even if it’s not a match-making visit, when your father’s friend comes to our house as a guest, shouldn’t you exhibit the demeanor of a host?"
Fang Tong was silent. The education she received from childhood reminded her her mother was right. She silently followed her mother out, bought two pieces of clothing, and then went to the supermarket to buy some groceries.
The next day, early in the morning, Fang Tong was woken up by her mother. She hadn’t slept well last night and felt poorly and looked pale.
"Tongtong, are you feeling okay?" Seeing her daughter’s unwell complexion, Fu Fanghua asked.
Fang Tong shook her head, "I didn’t sleep well last night. I’ll feel better after I do my makeup later."
Fu Fanghua was relieved but still advised, "You don’t have to like Uncle Li’s son, but you can’t be impolite to them. After all, they are our guests, understand?"
Fang Tong smiled, "Mom, am I not sensible?"
Fu Fanghua smiled as well, urging her daughter to have breakfast while she herself went into the kitchen. Although her family could afford a maid, it was usually just she and Fang Tong, and especially since Fang Tong went to college, she only came home on weekends, Fu Fanghua was too lazy to hire help.
Fang Chengzhi wasn’t at home, having gone out to pick up Li Wei’s family.
When the doorbell rang, Fang Tong was helping her mother with the vegetables. She got up to open the door and saw the family of Uncle Li mentioned by her father. Although it had been many years since they last met, Fang Tong recognized Li Wei immediately, "Uncle Li, long time no see."
Seeing the graceful and charming young girl before him, Li Wei was all smiles, "I can’t believe our Tongtong has grown up so much, becoming more and more beautiful. I almost didn’t recognize you."
The woman beside him was his wife, but not his first wife; after his original wife passed away, he remarried. It was Fang Tong’s first time meeting her, so she didn’t recognize her.
Fang Chengzhi introduced, "This is Uncle Li’s wife, Ji Ning. You can call her Aunt Ji."
Fang Tong beamed, "Hello, Aunt Ji."
Ji Ning also smiled; she didn’t seem very old, perhaps in her thirties, and was very well-preserved, "You must be the Tongtong that Old Li always talks about. It’s nice to see you in person. Every time he mentions you, he says you are well-behaved and sensible. It’s true indeed."
Everyone smiled at the pleasantries exchanged.
