Chapter 150: 150. Leng Qingqiu’s painting? (Third watch)
Jin Enxi was startled and looked at Shen Qinglan, "An, is there anything in this world you can’t do?" Originally, each of them had their own strengths, such as her being good at computers, Yin Deng engrossed in medicine, Cissily skilled in hypnosis, and An, who seemed to be good at almost everything. His solo combat ability was already the strongest among them, but now, she could even paint.
Shen Qinglan tilted her head, propped her chin, and posed thoughtfully, "It seems not."
Looking at Shen Qinglan, who appeared slightly playful, Jin Enxi was even more astonished. It had only been a few years since they last met, and An seemed very different from before. It seemed that she had gained something more... a vibrancy, yes, that’s the right word, vibrancy.
Daniel arrived quickly, and when the doorbell rang, Shen Qinglan and Jin Enxi were still chatting idly.
"Qinglan, where’s your new work?" As soon as Daniel entered, he started looking around, completely failing to notice the third person in the room.
Shen Qinglan pointed to the bag on the sofa. Daniel’s eyes lit up, and he eagerly took out the painting from inside, completely ignoring Jin Enxi sitting on the sofa.
Jin Enxi curiously watched the effeminate man, not the least bit upset about being ignored. She had already learned from Shen Qinglan that he was her agent.
"Qinglan, if you enter this painting in a competition, you’re definitely going to win a prize," Daniel exclaimed excitedly. "After the competition, we can auction it off, and it’ll surely fetch a high price, and boost the prices of your other paintings to a new level."
"I’m not planning on selling this painting." Daniel hadn’t finished talking before Shen Qinglan poured cold water on his idea.
Daniel’s expression froze on his face, disbelieving as he looked at her, "Why, Qinglan? Trust me, this painting will definitely sell for a high price if we auction it."
Daniel wanted to persuade her further, but Shen Qinglan was not someone easily convinced. No matter what he said, Shen Qinglan didn’t change her mind.
"Qinglan, please reconsider my proposal," Daniel held on to his last hope.
Shen Qinglan shook her head firmly, "Daniel, I’m definitely not selling this painting, but for the upcoming exhibition, I’m willing to let it be displayed."
Daniel’s face brightened slightly. Although it wasn’t as effective as an auction, if Shen Qinglan was willing to display it, it was still a good way to increase her notoriety.
"Then it’s settled," Daniel smiled broadly. "However, since you’ll be entering the competition, let’s postpone the exhibition originally set for the Spring Festival until after the competition is over."
"You decide on these matters," Shen Qinglan was indifferent, and she didn’t even care whether or not the exhibition was held.
Daniel carefully packed away the painting and only then noticed there was another person in the room. "Oh, who are you, and what are you doing here?"
Jin Enxi dug at her ear, "I’ve been here all the time, plus I live here." She spoke fluently in Mandarin, so Daniel didn’t realize she wasn’t from Z country.
"She’s my friend, Jin Enxi," Shen Qinglan spoke up.
Jin Enxi smiled and waved, "Hello, I’m Jin Enxi. Nice to meet you for the first time, please take good care of me."
"Hello, nice to meet you," Daniel replied, looking into Jin Enxi’s round and bright eyes, suddenly feeling his heartbeat quicken.
Watching the effeminate man becoming bashful, Jin Enxi’s interest deepened. She extended her hand and shook hands with Daniel, prompting a reddening of his face and an inadvertent laugh from her.
Daniel was even more embarrassed, "Well, Qinglan, I have other things to attend to, so I’ll be going." With that, he took the paintings and rushed out the door.
Jin Enxi’s laughter became even more unrestrained, even collapsing onto the sofa with it.
"Ha ha, An, your agent is really interesting."
Shen Qinglan gave her a bland look, "That’s enough, he’s my agent and also my friend. Be mindful."
She warned her, and had to. Despite Jin Enxi’s cutesy, Lolita-like demeanor in front of her, she had a wicked streak, delighting in teasing others. Apart from her, Jin Enxi had played pranks on all of their other friends without exception.
And she had tried to tease Jin Enxi before but hadn’t succeeded; instead, she got schooled by Shen Qinglan a few times and then she smartened up.
Jin Enxi nodded, "I get it, I promise not to tease him." Seeing Shen Qinglan’s disbelief, she held up three fingers, "I swear to God."
"If I find out, you’ll leave immediately," Shen Qinglan laid down the law.
Jin Enxi was sullen, surprised that Shen Qinglan had seen through her, "Alright, alright, I get it."
Soon after, Shen Qinglan received a call from Daniel, "Qinglan," Daniel sounded very serious.
"What’s up, Daniel?" These past couple of days, Shen Qinglan had been sticking around Shangya Garden, keeping Jin Enxi company.
"There are a few paintings circulating in the market claimed to be by Leng Qingqiu. I specifically bought one and found that it indeed closely resembles your style, almost indistinguishable as a fake. People who don’t know you could really be fooled."
Shen Qinglan paused, exchanged a glance with Jin Enxi, her phone on speaker, and obviously, Jin Enxi had also heard the conversation.
"I’ve had someone look into it, and they couldn’t find the person who painted it. Do you want me to come forward and clarify that these paintings aren’t yours?" Daniel said.
Everyone knew Daniel was Leng Qingqiu’s agent, and he oversaw matters concerning Leng Qingqiu’s artworks. If he stepped forward to state that these paintings weren’t Leng Qingqiu’s work, then no matter who the impersonator was, nobody would believe them, and nobody would buy the forgeries.
Shen Qinglan was silent for a moment before responding, "Not for now, let’s hold off. Whoever is doing this has put a lot of effort into imitating my paintings, they’re likely to have other moves planned; let’s wait and see."
"Okay, but Qinglan, why would someone want to copy your paintings, is it to gain notoriety?" Daniel speculated.
"Regardless of the motive, we’ll just observe for now."
"Fine, Qinglan, I’m going abroad tomorrow to submit your paintings for an exhibition, call me if you need anything."
"Got it."
After hanging up, Jin Enxi approached, "An, do you want me to help you investigate?"
"No need for now." Shen Qinglan wasn’t particularly concerned about it.
Jin Enxi shrugged, somewhat bored.
"An, what do you plan to do after graduation?"
"I haven’t decided yet; when are you going back?"
"An, I just arrived not long ago; are you in such a hurry to send me away?" Jin Enxi looked pitifully at Shen Qinglan.
Shen Qinglan remained indifferent.
"An, why not consider postgraduate study after graduation? We could keep each other company," Jin Enxi tossed aside her previous question, excitedly making the suggestion.
"No, thanks."
Jin Enxi pouted, "Figures, the coursework at university is just a piece of cake for you; it doesn’t matter whether you attend or not." If it weren’t for finding an excuse to see Shen Qinglan, Jin Enxi wouldn’t have bothered with college at all; those so-called professors, she wasn’t sure if they were teaching her or she was teaching them.
"If you have nothing else, you should head back early. I’m taking off." Shen Qinglan packed up her things and walked away nonchalantly, backpack in tow.
