Chapter 138: 138. Brother is Coming (Fourth Watch of the Night)
Seeing Qinglan’s silence, Fang Tong knew she had guessed correctly again and chuckled, "Actually, you don’t have to worry too much. Your man cares about you so much that even if he really is mad, it won’t last very long. Maybe by tomorrow morning, it will all be fine. Or else, just act a little coquettish, swallow your pride, and he’s sure to cool down immediately."
Qinglan: "...How do I act coquettish?"
Fang Tong fell silent. Imagining Qinglan trying to act coquettish with that cool, detached face of hers, she couldn’t help but shiver, "Well, maybe don’t act coquettish. Just say a few nice things to cajole him, that should do."
Fang Tong decided to give up on the coquettishness route.
Qinglan made an acknowledging noise and hung up the phone.
When Qinglan entered the bedroom again, Fu Hengyi had already finished his shower. She glanced at him but hadn’t figured out what to say, so she proceeded to take her own shower first.
By the time she finished her shower, she found Fu Hengyi already lying down, breathing evenly, apparently asleep. Whether it was real sleep or feigned sleep...
Qinglan let out a silent sigh, setting aside the idea of apologizing for now and laid down in bed as well.
Usually, as soon as she got in bed, Hengyi would pull her into his arms, but this time, not only did he not do so, but he also turned his back to her.
A trace of distress colored Qinglan’s usually impassive features as she watched Hengyi’s back for a long time. She wanted to speak up several times but ended up saying nothing and turned off the lights to sleep.
It was not until Qinglan had completely fallen asleep that Hengyi, who had been pretending to sleep, opened his eyes. He turned around and drew her into his embrace.
Qinglan was accustomed to Hengyi’s presence and had her guard down around him. The movement did not wake her, and she continued to find a comfortable position in his arms and drifted back to deep sleep.
Hengyi looked at her, "Such an ungrateful girl. I haven’t even gotten over my anger, and she’s sleeping so soundly."
He reached out, wanting to wake her up, but couldn’t bring himself to do so. In the end, he just kissed her lips gently before settling into a satisfied sleep.
The next morning, when Qinglan woke up, Hengyi’s figure was nowhere to be found on the bed. It was already cold to the touch, indicating he had been up for a while.
She got out of bed and walked out of the bedroom, only to see Hengyi carrying breakfast inside from outdoors, his expression calm. Qinglan’s eyes brightened slightly, "Fu Hengyi."
Hengyi did not look at her, simply went to the kitchen, then brought out breakfast on plates, "Eat."
His tone was cold, unlike his usual tenderness. Qinglan frowned but said nothing, sitting down at the dining table and silently eating her breakfast.
It seemed Hengyi was indeed very upset, and his anger had not subsided yet. Did she really have to act coquettish like Fang Tong suggested?
But Qinglan could fight, draw, cook—she just couldn’t act coquettish.
As she pondered how to appease Hengyi’s anger, the doorbell rang, one ring following another, indicating the urgency of the person outside.
Fu Hengyi rose to his feet and went to open the door.
As soon as the door swung open, Shen Junyu pushed past Fu Hengyi and walked in, yelling at Shen Qinglan, "Shen Qinglan, have you grown so bold now, daring to do whatever you please?"
His face was livid with rage, clearly very upset, leaving Shen Qinglan baffled by his outburst.
Seeing Shen Qinglan looking unrepentant, Shen Junyu grew even more furious and went to berate her further, but Fu Hengyi stopped him, "She hasn’t finished eating yet."
"What eating?" Shen Junyu shouted, but facing Fu Hengyi’s cold gaze, he swallowed his words, waved his hand, and glared at Shen Qinglan fiercely, "We’ll settle this later." With that, he sat down in the living room and glowered at Shen Qinglan.
Shen Qinglan remained calm, taking her time with breakfast.
By the time Shen Qinglan finished breakfast, twenty minutes had passed, and Shen Junyu’s anger had not diminished in the slightest.
"What’s this about?" Shen Qinglan asked, her words curt and to the point.
At this, Shen Junyu exploded, standing up abruptly and pointing at Shen Qinglan, "Dare to ask me what’s this about? I’m asking you, what did you do yesterday?"
Yesterday? Shen Qinglan’s gaze flickered with understanding, but doubt also rose in her heart. How did Shen Junyu find out? She didn’t remember that the mall was under Shen Junyu’s ownership.
Shen Junyu quickly resolved her confusion, "Shen Qinglan, should I applaud you for becoming the hero who stands up for justice? The Internet is now abuzz, claiming you’re the most beautiful female hero."
He scoffed, "Truly heroic, huh? Facing such a bloody scene, such a sharp knife, you rushed in without blinking an eye. Do you think you’re Wonder Woman? As if all the police officers and men present were dead, needing you, a frail woman, to charge into battle."
Shen Junyu scolded Shen Qinglan, who could hardly imagine the terror he felt when he saw the scene broadcasted online, seeing Shen Qinglan risking her life. His heart nearly stopped from fear as he hurried over, afraid that she might be in danger.
Shen Qinglan, with Shen Junyu wagging his finger in her face, said nothing in response, not even a change in her expression, as if the person being scolded wasn’t her.
Fu Hengyi, on the other hand, couldn’t stand by and watch. He stepped forward, blocking Shen Junyu’s line of sight, "She’s my wife." If anyone should reprimand her, it should be me.
Shen Junyu glared, "So what if she’s your wife, she’s still my biological sister. Now you’re telling me I can’t even speak my mind as her brother?" He paused, then turned a dissatisfied gaze towards Fu Hengyi, "What about you? How have you been taking care of her? Weren’t you with her? You just watched as she put herself in danger, is that what you call taking good care of her?"
Fu Hengyi looked at him with a stern face, lips tightly pressed, clearly displeased. While he could accept Shen Junyu’s accusation—he had indeed not taken good care of Shen Qinglan—he would not allow him to speak ill of her, even if the man was her own brother.
Shen Junyu grew up with him and could easily see his mood shift, so he moderated his tone, "Alright, even if she’s your wife, you should still keep an eye on her. How can you let her be so reckless? This time she was lucky not to get hurt, but what about next time?"
"There won’t be a next time," Fu Hengyi stated firmly. He would not let there be a next time.
Shen Junyu scoffed mockingly, "Fine, you’re a married couple, and she belongs to your family. I can’t control her, and I won’t. But..." He shifted his tone and glared at Shen Qinglan, "Shen Qinglan, let me tell you, if you ever do something that endangers yourself again, don’t bother calling me your brother."
His expression was dead serious, there was not a hint of jest—the idea of such an event repeating itself was enough to induce a heart attack, even if Shen Junyu didn’t have one already.
