Chapter 119: 119. I want to mooch a meal (second update)
"Enxi, I need your help with something," Shen Qinglan said, ignoring the online commotion and bringing up something that had been on her mind for a while.
"Hm?" Jin Enxi looked up from her computer and directed her gaze at Shen Qinglan, "What is it? Just say it."
"I need you to look up someone for me."
Jin Enxi made an ’OK’ gesture with her hand, "No problem, who? I guarantee I’ll dig up information on her ancestors going back eighteen generations."
"Qin Mu," red lips uttered the name.
Jin Enxi waited for her to continue, but saw that Shen Qinglan mentioned only those two words and would not say anything more.
"That’s it?"
"Code Six," Shen Qinglan added.
Jin Enxi first appeared completely baffled, then her expression suddenly changed as she evidently thought of a person, but that individual had died long ago, more than a decade ago.
"An, you are not referring to the person I’m thinking of, right?" Jin Enxi’s face showed a mixture of shock and doubt. She belonged to the same group as Shen Qinglan and Qin Mu and naturally knew that Qin Mu had died during that trial. Although she didn’t know exactly how Qin Mu died, everyone in their group was aware of the close relationship between Shen Qinglan and Qin Mu. In that hell filled with humanity’s ugliness, such a relationship seemed especially precious.
"I want to know about her origins, whether she still has any family in the world," Shen Qinglan said, her cool voice tinged with a faint sadness.
Qin Mu always told her that as long as they kept going, they could eventually return home. When they got home, they would see their family and live a happy life together. Shen Qinglan thought that Qin Mu’s former home must have been very happy, for her to hold it in her heart so dearly.
Six years had passed since she returned, and Shen Qinglan had not failed to investigate Qin Mu’s background, but she found nothing.
Jin Enxi was silent for a moment before speaking slowly, "An, all the information on that organization has been destroyed by me; it’s completely irretrievable, not to mention she has been dead for so many years. I never even saw her information in the database to begin with." As a loser, she didn’t even have the right to have her information remain in the world.
"I know it’s difficult, but I still want to try."
Upon hearing this, Jin Enxi lowered her gaze and pondered for a moment, then lifted her eyes to meet Shen Qinglan’s, "Okay, I’ll do my best to help you look."
After Jin Enxi promised to help, she invariably put forth her best effort, but it was like searching for a needle in a haystack. She expended a great deal of effort but didn’t find a single clue.
Shen Qinglan was naturally disappointed, yet she had prepared herself emotionally and said nothing.
**
These days, because of the exposure of her identity as the Shen Family’s daughter, she hadn’t been to school at all, either staying at Shangya Garden or Jiangxin Garden, and only occasionally returning to the compound.
Yu Xiaoxuan was concerned about Shen Qinglan due to being tied up with closed training, but she couldn’t leave. She could only make phone calls from time to time to check on Shen Qinglan’s living conditions, despite knowing that with Shen Qinglan’s capabilities, there was no need to worry.
"Qinglan, you have no idea, the school is abuzz with discussions about your identity. Ever since your identity as a wealthy heiress was exposed, many have been cozying up to me. Because of you, I’m now a hot commodity," Fang Tong joked.
She was at Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi’s apartment now; Shen Qinglan asked her over the phone to bring something over.
"We’re out of juice at home, have some tea instead," Shen Qinglan said, placing a cup of green tea on the coffee table in front of Fang Tong.
Fang Tong took a sip and clicked her tongue in appreciation, "Ah, authentic Yuqian Longjing. Qinglan, you really know how to enjoy life."
Shen Qinglan gave a faint smile, "If you like it, you can take some with you when you leave. Grandfather gave it to me when I was last home."
"I wouldn’t want to take what others enjoy. My fondness for tea is just so-so. If it weren’t for my dad liking it, I wouldn’t be able to tell one tea from another. Such good tea would be wasted on me, like a cow chewing peonies."
Fang Tong took out a book from her backpack and handed it to Shen Qinglan, "Here, this is the book you wanted. I don’t get it, Qinglan. As a student of Chinese language and literature, why are you reading French literature? Do you even understand French?"
Fang Tong had known Shen Qinglan for over three years and was only now discovering that she could speak French.
"Just browsing," Shen Qinglan replied. She liked reading various kinds of books. Although that organization had given her many painful memories, it had also taught her a lot. In fact, with her expertise, there was no need for her to attend high school or college; her theoretical knowledge far surpassed many university professors.
"By the way, have you seen Wu Qian recently?"
Shen Qinglan shook her head; she hadn’t even been to school.
"Wu Qian probably learned about your identity online. The other day, she came back and asked me if I had known about your identity all along, speaking in a snide tone."
Shen Qinglan let out a light chuckle.
"Not only that, but she also asked if you had blocked her. She said she called you and you didn’t answer. She claimed that now that you’re the daughter of the Shen Family, you look down on people and don’t even contact your classmates anymore," Fang Tong said, laughing, "I find her logic pretty strange. You’ve been the Shen Family’s daughter all along, so doesn’t it sound weird for her to say that?"
"There are all kinds of birds in the forest; you don’t need to pay them any mind," Shen Qinglan said calmly, indeed having set up call blocking for unknown numbers.
In fact, Wu Qian’s thoughts were quite understandable. She had always thought that they were alike, with poor family backgrounds, and took solace in that. But now she found out Shen Qinglan was actually a rich heiress, so it was just a matter of feeling unbalanced.
"Oh, she also asked when you’d return to school. Her boyfriend wants to invite everyone from our dorm to have a meal together," Fang Tong mentioned.
Wu Qian’s boyfriend—Shen Qinglan gave it a moment’s thought and knew he must be the same man she had seen a few times. It was obvious to any discerning person that he wasn’t sincere about Wu Qian, but Wu Qian was naive enough to believe him.
Shen Qinglan simply ignored the mention of the meal.
Fang Tong only mentioned it in passing, as she had no interest in dining with Wu Qian’s boyfriend. She had always thought Wu Qian, although not fond of socializing, was a decent person. Now it seemed, heh, it was just her own poor judgment.
Fang Tong was starting to understand why some people from affluent families didn’t like to mingle with those from more modest backgrounds. It wasn’t about the wealth gap; it was about the vast difference in their mindsets. Those with lesser means only thought about how the wealthy earned their money dishonestly and looked down on the poor. Little did they realize what they hated was actually the petty thinking of the lower-middle class.
Even if rich people found it easier to earn money, it was still through their own hard work, allowing them to live more comfortable lives. Why should they live miserably?
"Qinglan, having known you for so many years, I’ve never tasted your cooking. Today, I’m going to invite myself over for a meal."
Shen Qinglan glanced at her, "Are you sure?"
