Chapter 662: Chapter 663: Two Women Bonding
Petite Bao’er walked to the window, squinting at the sunlight streaming in. She strained her eyes to peer through the glow, almost as if she was trying to discern the truth hidden within.
The effort seemed painful, so eventually, Bao’er lowered her head. She rubbed her eyes and turned to the desk. No longer rubbing her eyes, she turned her gaze towards the hallway, where the door to her room was now open.
At the turn in the hallway was a door, she knew it was Chu You’s bedroom, but it still remained closed.
A flicker of sadness seemed to pass through Bao’er’s sparkling eyes, but it disappeared as quickly as it came.
Bao’er sat down and picked up a small mirror from the desk. Her face was reflected in it, alongside her open textbooks and completed assignments.
As she looked at herself in the mirror, a faraway expression gradually found its way to her face.
In the end, a sigh seemed to echo within her heart.
Why did her heart feel so bruised?
I know you don’t want to be disturbed. I’ve been such a quiet presence in the house.
You’ve adopted me, yet you keep distancing yourself from me.
Did you enroll me in those enrichment classes because you thought I’d be bored and neglected? Bao’er wanted to tell you, she never felt bored and she was more than capable of taking care of herself.
Did you know, Bao’er’s surname in Chinese means ’loneliness’? It’s like she has been destined to live alone. And indeed, she had already been living alone for almost seven years now. She had to take care of herself in the orphanage for the most part. How could she ever feel bored?
School was the boring part, where everyone behaved so childishly.
Bao’er’s wish was so simple. She just wanted to feel your presence around her. That was all. That alone would make her content and satisfied.
’Ding Dong!’
Just as she was lost in thought, she was brought back to reality by the doorbell. She looked towards the hallway once more.
A question flashed in her mind. Who could it be? Could it be Sister Zhijun returned? But could she be back so soon?
’Ding dong!’
The doorbell rang again. Meanwhile, inside Chu You’s room, on the corner of his large computer desk was a monitor. On it was a video feed of a woman standing outside their front door, pressing the doorbell every three seconds.
Bao’er emerged from her room and made her way to the end of the hallway. She glanced at Chu You’s room as she passed by. She quickened her steps slightly as she descended the stairs; in no time she was at the front door.
Having grown up in a large institution like the orphanage, Bao’er didn’t think to crack open the peephole in the door. As for the security cameras that were able to monitor the doorway, Chu You’s rental villa didn’t have them installed. That was something he never bothered with in his personal quarters.
But after the incident with the shadowy figure, Bao’er had learned to be more alert. She asked,
"Who is it?"
"Is that you, Bao’er? Can you guess who’s speaking?" A clear and melodious voice answered from the other side.
Recognizing the voice, a smile appeared on Bao’er’s face as she opened the door.
Outside stood a tall and elegant woman, who was none other than Zhao Feiyan.
"Sister Fei Fei."
"Hi, Bao’er. You’re homely today, not at school?" Zhao Feiyan knew that Bao’er was at home, and she also knew that Chu You was probably still playing his game.
"Yes, it’s Saturday. Come in, Sister Fei Fei." Bao’er stepped aside to allow Zhao Feiyan in and then closed the door behind her.
"Sister Fei Fei, how did you know where we live?" Bao’er asked, her eyes twinkling as she fetched a cup of warm water for her guest.
"Your brother told me in the game." Zhao Feiyan responded, a slight cunning glint in her eyes.
"Please have a seat, Sister Fie Fie, and have some water." Bao’er placed the cup on the living room table.
Zhao Feiyan looked around, taking in her surroundings; this was her first visit to Chu You’s temporary home. Her eyes were filled with curiosity. Hearing Bao’er’s invitation, she seated herself on the sofa.
"Bao’er, you are such a sensible girl." She picked up the cup and took a sip. Bao’er smiled and sat down as well.
"Does my brother know you’re here?" Asked Bao’er suddenly. In her mind, since Zhao Feiyan was here, surely her brother should be getting offline soon.
"Haha, he doesn’t know. I came uninvited. I know you’re home." Zhao Feiyan had planned this before embarking on her visit.
Zhao Feiyan didn’t hold back at all. She openly observed her surroundings and conversed freely with Bao’er, not putting on any airs. Her personality was so easygoing and familial that Bao’er couldn’t help but feel close to her.
"Is this your first time coming over, Sister Fei Fei?" As soon as she asked this, Bao’er regretted it. From the earlier meeting at the hotel, it was clear that Chu You and Zhao Feiyan were meeting for the first time. This visit must then be her first time here.
"Of course, it’s my first time. Has he not come out yet?" Zhao Feiyan didn’t seem to mind and quickly changed the subject.
"No, not yet."
Zhao Feiyan shook her head, still smiling, "Bao’er, have you had breakfast? Are you hungry?"
"Oh, I’ve already eaten."
"Where did you eat?"
"I cooked for myself. I left some for my brother too, but he hasn’t come out yet, and I don’t want to disturb him." Bao’er answered, looking at her knees.
When Zhou Zhijun had left, she had left behind a lot of food. Some of it was simple day to day stuff, so Bao’er was able to prepare some simple meals. Also, there were plenty of ready-to-eat snacks.
"Bao’er, you’re really remarkable. At your age, I couldn’t do even half of those things." Zhao Feiyan spoke, her eyes filled with curiosity, "Bao’er, where were you before? Chu You mentioned something about you two. He said that your parents and his were close. Of course, I also know that both of your parents are no longer in this world." Zhao Feiyan’s voice softened as she spoke.
She explained all this in such detail in order to put Bao’er at ease. Look, Chu You had told her everything, so she must be someone he trusts. Surely Bao’er could trust her too?!
"I... I was sent to the orphanage when I was four. The orphanage was run by my brother’s parents."
"Oh, what about your relatives?"
Bao’er shook her head, "I don’t like them."
"When did Chu You take you in?"
"Just last month."
"So it was this year." Zhao Feiyan nodded, "You’ve been in the orphanage since you were four, and only now Chu You took you in. Oh, what year did your parents pass away? Can you tell me?"
"It happened the same year I entered the orphanage." Bao’er replied calmly. So many years have passed since then.
"How old are you now, Bao’er?"
"I’m going to turn eleven soon."
"So you’ve lived in the orphanage for seven years?"
"Ehh, six years and some."
Six years? She wondered, what could have happened during this period that made Chu You wait until now to take in Bao’er? Why now?
Sigh, Chu You, the more she knew about you, the more mysterious you seem. You’re simply inscrutable.
