Chapter 519: Chapter 520: The Wicked Woman
Chu You opened his eyes, his gaze instantly settling on little Bao’er already sitting on his bed. A touch of tenderness flickered in his eyes at the sight of her small figure.
Then, the sound of quarreling reached his ears. Turning his head slightly, Chu You observed that Bao’er was oblivious to his awakening.
"Jing Ning, let me tell you, now that your grandmother has passed away, there are no elders left in the house. The property they left behind is in your dad’s name, not yours!" A middle-aged woman said this, her face twisted with malice.
"Are you suggesting that he doesn’t want to give me a single cent?" Dantai Jingning asked, her face composed but ice-cold.
"After all, he’s your father. The property has been sold; here’s thirty thousand dollars. Take it. I don’t want to ever see you around my house again. Understood?" Those menacing words were followed by a toss of a paper bag onto the bed, crammed full with thirty thousand Soft Sister Coins.
"Compared to your dad, your mom was far worse - she absconded with another man and vanished into thin air."
"Here’s why I came today: I don’t care where you go from now on, whether or not your relatives are willing to take you in. Get in touch with them yourself."
"In short, I don’t want to see you on our doorstep. Your father is mine, as is this house. It’s my home, and you are not welcome. Got it?"
"Your father couldn’t bear to say these things to you, hence why I’m doing it. This money is distributed by my decree, and you should show gratitude. But I don’t need any of your thanks, understand me?"
The middle-aged woman spoke rapidly, but her words were clear. Her tone was laced with a sense of viciousness.
"I don’t even want this money. Now, I only want to contact him. I need to ask him myself; is this his doing?" Compared to the middle-aged woman, Dantai Jingning spoke far more gently, her tone unwavering.
"Jing Ning, you’re handicapped; your father has made great sacrifices for years to bring you up and send you to college. Don’t you appreciate it at all? Can’t you set him free? Are you that desperate to cause him even more pain?"
"I plead with you, please let your father go. He’s ready to start a new life," the middle-aged woman begged, her tone suddenly softening.
A single crystal-clear tear appeared in Dantai Jingning’s eyes. It lingered, then slowly fell.
Yet a smile surfaced on Dantai Jingning’s face, as beautiful as a millennium-old flower blossoming.
"If it wasn’t for you, would my parents still have to live with the elderly? Their daily sustenance is clear soup with noodles, haven’t you harmed not only your parents but your entire family?"
"Your disease alone isn’t a burden any ordinary family can bear. It’s an endless money pit."
"Your shameless mother insisted on bringing you up, and what happened after? She was the first one to run off."
"According to your father, your mother only decided to raise you because she had difficulty getting pregnant. Huh, karma really is a bitch!"
Dantai Jingning gently wiped her tears, still smiling. Then she spoke.
"Stop it. You keep the money. I don’t want it. Please leave. I promise never to appear in front of you again."
The middle-aged woman’s eyes lit up, yet she looked skeptical. "Really?"
Dantai Jingning simply nodded, her lips pursed as she closed her eyes. Another tear fell as she let out a sigh. Lowering her head, she stared at her blanket, her hair hanging down.
"Really!"
"Say it while looking at me!"
Dantai Jingning lifted her head. Her eyes were a bit red, a startling contrast against her pale face, the only color remaining on her otherwise lifeless body.
"Really! I will never appear before you again, nor seek him out."
The middle-aged woman pointed at Dantai Jingning and remarked, "You said it."
"I said it!"
Without uttering another word, the middle-aged woman took out a paper from her bag. She hurriedly walked to the seated Dantai Jingning and handed her the paper.
"If you have no issues, place your signature here!" After saying that, she also handed a pen to her and then fetched a seal from her bag, presumably for the signature and seal.
"Look, your father’s personal signature and his thumbprint are below. Now there’s no more need for confirmation, huh? Your father has endured enough. You are an adult now and should be able to fend for yourself. Besides, you’re quite charming." The middle-aged woman said the last sentence with a peculiar look.
The intent of the document in question was for Dantai Jingning to cut off all relations with her father, to sever all ties and have no further interaction.
Picking up the pen, Dantai Jingning glanced at the woman. Suddenly, the middle-aged woman felt a chill, a flicker of fear in her eyes. But it swiftly turned into fury. She glared at Dantai Jingning; probably she was irked and losing her temper.
Dantai Jingning ignored her. Instead, she signed her name on the paper, took the seal, neatly pressed her thumb into the red ink and firmly stamped it onto the paper with her name. There was no hesitation throughout the process.
The middle-aged woman examined the signed document with satisfaction before carefully putting it back into her bag. After a sudden chuckle, she asked in a low voice, "You wouldn’t keep this money, really?"
Dantai Jingning didn’t say anything. She just looked at her, her eyes unblinking.
"Good girl, you have a backbone! But I am soft-hearted. Keep this money."
"I already said no."
"Do you know why people dislike you? It’s because of your stubbornness and sour attitude. Take it! This was your father’s instruction. I’ll feel at ease and we all can move on."
Suddenly, Dantai Jingning reached out a hand and hurled the paper bag directly at the middle-aged woman, striking her in the face.
"I said no." Her voice was colder than before.
Chu You’s furrowed his brow, noticing how startled Bao’er was.
The middle-aged woman was caught off guard and took the hit right in the face. Instantly, rage surged in her heart.
"Alright. I will see how you survive without help. You little vixen, why don’t you just die? If I were you, I would have jumped off a building by now. How can you bear to live? Your mom is a whore, and you’re no better!" The middle-aged woman didn’t retaliate physically; instead, she sneered while picking up the paper bag.
"Goodbye!! If you dare show your face in front of me again, I will destroy your only valuable belonging, your skin. Don’t blame me for becoming the wicked one, you wretch!!" Having said her piece, the middle-aged woman turned on her heels and strode away. Just as she reached the door, she spat towards Dantai Jingning with contempt.
When the footsteps of the middle-aged woman finally died away, Chu You and Bao’er heard a sob.
At that moment, Dantai Jingning really did cry. Her weeping was deliberately muted, filling the hospital room with a sense of utter heartbreak.
Bao’er stared at her weeping sister, Jing Ning, a world of thoughts swirling in her little head.
"Bao’er!"
At that moment, a vibrant and energetic male voice echoed in the hospital room.
Bao’er quickly turned her head to look at Chu You, her wide eyes filled with an indescribable expression.
He greeted her with a warm and radiant smile.
