Chapter 474: Chapter 475: Torturing Prisoners
"Uh, alright, but I need the written order from you, my lord."
So, Chu You took out his command document from his backpack space. He tore off a blank page, which bore the seal of his own command. This meant that whatever he wrote on it would form his command. Then he would hand it over to his subordinates, making things easier for them.
Finally, he input his own command into this blank page with his mind and handed it to the old steward, who received it and said, "Alright, I’ll summon the prisoners immediately. Are you asking for 100 of them?" The old steward asked for confirmation.
"Yes, bring me 100."
"Alright, my lord, please wait a moment. They will be here soon." Knowing that he was holding a plentiful supply, the old steward handled matters very efficiently and hurried out.
Before long, he heard shouting and the sound of chains outside. It seemed the NPC prisoners from Japan had been brought here.
"My lord, the prisoners are here. You can go outside to see them. The commander of the Prisoner of War Camp is waiting for your reply." The steward hurriedly informed Chu You.
"Alright, let’s go have a look." The two went towards the main entrance.
Seeing the imposing Chu You, clad in a black dragon robe, a soldier in armor knelt down on one knee and said in a strong voice, "I have seen you, my lord Commander. According to your decree, I have brought the 100 prisoners here."
"Very good, what may I call you, soldier?" Chu You asked as he scanned over the lines of Japanese war prisoners, a glint in his eyes.
"My name is Jian Ning, my lord."
"Very well, I understand. Stand up, Jian Ning. Can you understand what they are saying?" Chu You asked while his eyes remained on the prisoners.
The Japanese prisoners seemed spirited, with meat on their bones, it seemed like they were living quite comfortably in the Eastern Fortress Prisoner of War Camp! They were not wearing armor, but rather warm clothing. The only identifying features indicating them as prisoners were the rune shackles on their hands and the chains on their feet. If it weren’t for those, one could hardly recognize that they were captives.
The most important thing was, there seemed to be a sense of superiority in their eyes that was hard to describe when they looked at Chu You and others. There was a hint of disdain, as if they believed nothing could be done to them, and they held no fear.
Chu You looked at his soldiers. It appeared that they hadn’t noticed the attitude of these Japanese captives, or perhaps they did, but had just gotten used to it? In any case, the soldiers around him looked numb, hatred in their eyes that seemed suppressed by some consideration, their hatred unexpressed.
Chu You chuckled. As prisoners, they were acting like lords. This was not proper treatment of captives. Why treat the enemy nicely when you’re about to go to war with them? Chu You didn’t understand what Jin Chuiduo or the Court were thinking.
"My lord, I can understand their language," Jian Ning, standing up, said. Because he wore a helmet, his facial features could not be clearly seen. But from his voice, he seemed quite young.
"In that case, remove their clothing," Chu You said lightly.
"Huh? My lord, what are you doing?" Jian Ning asked perplexedly.
"Are you questioning me?"
"Huh? No, not at all." Jian Ning quickly bowed his head in apology.
"The strategic materials need hands to carry them. Ha, it’s strenuous work; how can they work dressed so warmly? Immediately strip them of their clothes."
"Yes, as you command!" Jian Ning saluted and bowed his head. He then turned to face the Japanese prisoners, sternly commanding in Japanese: "Take off your clothes, now!"
Upon hearing this, the Japanese prisoners looked at each other, all with surprised expressions. Yet, there was no movement from them, displaying their hesitation.
Chu You couldn’t help but furrow his brow, coldly asking, "Why aren’t they undressing?"
Ign Ning shouted once more: "Take off your clothes!"
Only then did the Japanese prisoners reluctantly begin to strip, as the soldiers next to them began unlocking their handcuffs.
"These ingrates!" Chu You, pointing at one of the slowest-moving Japanese prisoners, ordered, "Execute him!"
"Commander, the court has decreed that we must treat prisoners well! We absolutely cannot kill captives."
"I am your highest-ranking officer right now. Should any issue arise, I will assume responsibility. Kill him!"
"Following orders!" A glimmer appeared in Jian Ning’s eyes as he swiftly drew his sword, then sternly instructed the soldiers, "Bring that prisoner to me!"
"Yes!" All the soldiers on scene clearly heard the command. Without any hesitation, they dragged out a Japanese prisoner who still looked dazed and indifferent. Under his slight panic, the soldiers forced him to kneel on the ground.
Looking at Jian Ning, his longsword drawn and a murderous look on his face as he stood by his side, the captive from the East finally displayed an expression of fear, gibbering some incomprehensible words.
At that moment, a soldier forced his head down, revealing the skin of his neck.
Jian Ning raised his sharp longsword, and the 99 other captives from the East were stunned by this scene. What was about to happen?
A flash of anger saw across Jian Ning’s eyes, then his hand gripping the hilt of the sword began to radiate a luminous presence, until finally the entire blade faintly glowed. At that moment, Jian Ning violently hacked at the neck of the captive kneeling on the ground. Like slicing a watermelon, the captive’s head was severed, and blood spurted out like a geyser.
The soldier who had been holding the captive’s head found himself holding a severed head, staring back at him.
Simultaneously, a red brilliance from a blood bead emerged from the corpse and quickly entered his own body. This fleeting moment went unnoticed by Chu You, as no one else at the scene had witnessed this peculiar phenomenon.
They really couldn’t see the blood beads! Chu You realized this when a prompt from the System appeared, displaying the current number of life force harvested.
"Tell them, this is the consequence of not obeying orders immediately!"
With a blood-drenched longsword, Jian Ning wore a murderous and fierce look as he stared at the remaining 99 captives from the East, translating Chu You’s words for them.
Only then did the captives from the East start to cooperate earnestly. Under Chu You’s orders, they quickly undressed, leaving only their trousers on.
"Assign overseers, each with a whip in hand. If anyone slacks off, whip them without mercy! Have I made myself clear?"
"Yes, sir!" Jian Ning replied loudly.
"Once you’re prepared, bring in the personnel." After saying this, Chu You turned and returned to the fortress’s reserve area. The old steward standing to one side had a serious expression, but there was undisguised satisfaction in his eyes. He quietly said, "The Lord’s actions are truly gratifying!"
"Do you know why we should treat the Japanese war prisoners so favourably?" He posed a question he had been pondering.
"My lord may not be aware, but this is actually an order from the court. The purpose is to exchange prisoners with the other side."
"Heh, then why have the prisoners not been exchange until now?" Chu You knew that the last war had ended several years ago, and yet the prisoners had never been exchanged. There must be something fishy going on.
"Uh, supposedly the court is still negotiating with them."
"Haha, how amusing. Negotiations have dragged on until another war has started? I’m afraid they deliberately delayed previously, and are now taking advantage of the situation to start a war, rescue their prisoners, and completely take down the eastern fortress." Chu You’s tone was filled with scorn.
"I’m just an old man managing a warehouse, I don’t understand these things. But I think what the Lord said makes a lot of sense!"
"Then the question arises, how are our war prisoners in Japan faring at the moment?"
"Ah... After the Lord’s reminder, I fear that the odds are not in their favour. They might already be extinct."
"I’m certain of it!" Having said this, Chu You emptied 1000 barrels of God of Frenzy Wine and 30 boxes of Dark Gold Magical Cores from his backpack. The area around the two men immediately filled with these military supplies.
"Old steward, get the captives to arrange these supplies now. You’re in charge of the details."
"Yes, yes, yes." The old steward nodded quickly.
They then left through a gap. Outside, the sound of whips and guards shouting could be heard, along with the cries of the captives.
Finally, the captives, their bodies bearing the whip marks, filed in one after another. Once the old steward had received his permission, he quickly began to work.
Under his direction, the captives began to move the supplies to the designated spots. Those who weren’t contributing enough, had a negative attitude, put stuff in the wrong place, or were performing their duties perfunctorily, would face the ruthless whip of the overseer soldiers.
Perhaps due to the long period of preferential treatment, or perhaps unable to face this sudden malevolence, some of the war prisoners began to rebel.
Upon seeing this, Chu You matter-of-factly said, "Kill him!"
He then announced loudly to everyone: "Soldiers, let me make this clear to all of you, those who dare to rebel, if you think a captive challenges your dignity, drag them out and execute them right away! You don’t need my permission for this!"
In Chu You’s mind, not only the captives before his eyes, but also the tens of thousands of Japanese war prisoners in the camp, their ending has been sealed!
