Chapter 371: Chapter 372: The Yet-to-Open Flower Bud

Bao’er’s innocent eyes drooped slightly, avoiding the teacher lecturing at the podium. This behavior did not seem befitting of a good student.

Around her, other students were keeping their eyes wide open, absorbed in the teacher’s lecture. However, Bao’er was different, an unusual departure from her normal behavior.

With her head lowered slightly, Bao’er appeared to be reading a book. However, she wasn’t. She had taken out the cell phone Chu You had given her, and had opened up the app of ’Today’s Headlines’ - a news software she had downloaded the previous night. This app provided current news and hot topics divided into multiple categories which had kept Bao’er awake all of last night.

Opening the app again, her small fingers flicked aimlessly, seemingly searching for news that interested her.

The orphanage was too dull, or perhaps too isolated. The children could only leave once a week for group activities supervised by teachers. Individual activities were basically impossible. Though there were computers and other means to understand the outside world, these could not substitute for experiencing the world first-hand.

Bao’er raised her eyes to look at the lecturer on the podium, her delicate eyebrows furrowed, and a complicated negative expression flashed in her eyes. Ever since their eye contact last time, she had come to greatly dislike this teacher. He did not appear again after that incident. Whenever she crossed paths with him, Bao’er would promptly lower her head, her demeanor slightly panicked. If it was unavoidable, she would scurry away. She did not want to see him again.

However, she could not avoid classes with this teacher. Because of her dislike for him, obedient Bao’er had started to develop a ’rebellious’ inclination, even towards his classes.

Noticing that the male teacher was not looking her way, Bao’er returned to surreptitiously checking her phone.

"Dugu Bao’er!" A stern voice suddenly rang out.

The surrounding classmates cast sideways glances at their class representative. Ever since that young influential man had shown favor towards her, Bao’er had become even more favored by many teachers, leading to further isolation within the class. Everyone here was an orphan, children lacking parental love. Seeing all the affection bestowed upon one person naturally led to jealousy amongst them. Even though they were but children.

A few classmates sitting around Bao’er had already noticed her playing with the phone, but they didn’t dare to snitch. The orphanage kids were more mature than most their age, at least they had learned how to protect themselves.

Lacking any support, and void of any innocence, these children had learned to be silent instead of indulging whims.

Sticking together was one of the skills these orphans had learned, and within these groups, everyone respected each other’s independence.

Bullying rarely happened in the orphanage, but isolating another child could be a form of ’bullying’ in itself.

What was isolation? Indifference, ignoring, and silence.

Bao’er pursed her lips and sandwiched the phone between her thighs, then raised her head to meet her male teacher’s gaze.

"Stop playing with your phone and put it away." The male teacher did not angrily confiscate the phone, but spoke softly instead.

After hearing him, Bao’er opened her desk, placed her phone inside, and remained silent.

After a while, the bell for the end of class rang, the male teacher then said: "Bao’er, come to the office." After saying this, he was the first to leave the classroom.

Bao’er couldn’t refuse the teacher’s authority. With a silent gait, she left the classroom and later entered the office with the male teacher.

"Oh, Bao’er." A female teacher was the first to notice Bao’er’s figure, her face brightening into a smile.

"Good morning, Teacher Tang." Bao’er greeted with a faint smile.

The male teacher’s desk was at the back of the room. There was only one female teacher in the room grading papers. It seemed a bit too quiet.

The man took a sip from his thermal flask, and turned his gaze towards Bao’er. A glimmer of an inexplicable emotion flashed in his eyes, "Bao’er, I have explained to you before the reason for being your dorm’s night warden that evening. You seem to be wary of me since then. Don’t you have anything to say to me? I’d like to hear your thoughts." He regretted panicking and ’fleeing’ that evening, he should have asked her why she was awake instead of sleeping. Such an interrogation could have served dual purposes – a cover and a show of care. His was overwhelmed by emotions back then.

Bao’er chose to remain silent, she was like an unopened flower bud.

...

"So you’re saying Night Ghost used a ninth-order skill on you? That pervert’s instant teleportation skill?" He Junkai stared seriously at Yi A-Hua as he spoke.

"Yes, I have been thinking about it, and that seems to be the only explanation. He targeted me first, and his goal was very clear: to devour my pet." Yi A-Hua, who had almost fully recovered, was analyzing Night Ghost’s behavior.

"I just don’t understand. Did he soul brand me during the World Auction? Damn it, this skill is too perverted. It can be used even in places where skills shouldn’t work!" Yi A-Hua couldn’t help swearing.

Upon hearing this, He Junkai breathed a small sigh of relief. It seemed that Night Ghost’s attack was not specifically aimed at him. Was it merely a coincidence that they happened upon his team when they were attacking the Boss for a nest? And his growth was becoming terrifying.

"Every skill has a counter, and I’ve found that Divine Power Equipment has this function. If we could upgrade it to top level, we might be able to detect such devious skills." He Junkai comforted. However, everyone’s faces suddenly changed, it appeared they had all received the same message.

"Damn, he really did it. He defeated the boss so quickly!" The news drew a gasp of disbelief from one person.

"It seems Night Ghost summoned a new type of soldier. Only one, but it had a super-strong attack power. Even though..." As he spoke, a man shook his head with a complex expression. "Regardless, his strength is terrifying. He defeated a level 34 boss so quickly. It won’t be a problem for him to ascend to godhood later on."

"More importantly, no one seems to be able to stop his growth."

"Well, it’s not our concern. The Huaxia people will find a way to deal with it. I wonder what the boss will drop, I hope it’s just a black diamond-grade equipment."

"Don’t forget, after dealing with this boss, there’s still a creature’s nest."

"It’s foreseeable that Night Ghost will definitely take the creature’s nest and recruit the soldiers. What will he do next?" One person speculated, his eyes filled with curiosity. The creature’s nest moved slowly and could not be teleported away. Would Night Ghost really stay here?

The people all understood his meaning. After Night Ghost left, they could take that creature’s nest!
