Chapter 150: Chapter 150: Targeting the Beast Race (1st Update)
System: Congratulations! You earned 10,000 Prestige Points!
System: Congratulations! You have become a noble of Yan Kingdom. Please check your character’s attributes for detailed noble privileges!
"Thank you for your kindness, Grand Marshal." Chu You thanked him without rising from his seat.
"Oh, where are we, you deserve this." The Grand Marshal responded with a smile and handed the Imperial Decree he was holding to Chu You, saying, "Please keep this safe."
After taking the Imperial Decree, Chu You immediately stored it in his backpack.
Due to the significant increase in his favorability, the Grand Marshal took the initiative to talk about Chu You’s affairs and said, "Night Ghost, let’s discuss how to earn military merits now to help you gain control of the Heavenly Gate Fortress soon." The Grand Marshal treated Chu You like one of his own, and indeed, all the previous 17 barons were people who were loyal to the Grand Marshal.
"By the way, Grand Marshal, what level of prestige is needed to reach an agreement with the court to trade the Heavenly Gate Fortress?" This was the question Chu You couldn’t afford not to care about.
Looking into Chu You’s eyes, the Grand Marshal slowly said, "You have to obtain the rank of Earl; this is a prerequisite!"
Chu You understood: to become an Earl, one must reach 100,000 Prestige Points. This was also a prerequisite. There was a gap of 90,000 prestige points, which could be obtained by Chu You much faster than if he had to forcefully take control of the Heavenly Gate Fortress.
Seeing Chu You nodding, the Grand Marshal asked, "Do you have any idea where you will start to earn your military merits?"
Chu You agreed with the Grand Marshal’s suggestion. Establishing military merits might earn him prestige points faster than other methods, and although the difficulty would be higher, none of these were a problem for him.
"The wilderness, the Beast Kingdom!" Chu You slowly said.
"Hisss~ the Beast Race huh." The Grand Marshal made a strange noise, showing some surprise. "The Beast Race is extremely dangerous. During the full moon, they will unleash their beast tide, their combat power increases many folds... hm~ They frequently harass our borders, occupy some territories, and they are quite barbaric, understanding only destruction. For us humans, they burn, kill, plunder, they stop at nothing, especially when women are involved; they’re a gang of mongrels!" By the end, the Grand Marshal was somewhat grinding his teeth.
Hearing the Grand Marshal’s assessment of the Beast Race, Chu You was somewhat surprised. He had never heard any NPC use such language before.
Chu You nodded his head. "In that case, they indeed are a bunch of mongrels!" In the Celestial World, the population of the Human Race was quite small. Except for players, in terms of population size, the Human Race held no advantages. The main reason was that there were too many races that held hostility towards the Human Race, like the Beast Race, Dark Camp, Hell, Monster Beasts, etc...
"Are you sure you want to set your target as the Beast Race?"
"Yes!" Chu You knew that the deposits in the Beast territory were extremely abundant, and he had to occupy those areas.
"Okay, okay, since that’s so, I’ll give you a few tasks. Do you dare to accept them?" The Grand Marshal had an imposing air, his eyes were burning bright.
"Haha, there’s nothing I wouldn’t dare to do; you just have to command, Grand Marshal!" Chu You laughed heartily.
"The first task: exterminate all the Beast Race near Luo River, the second task: construct a checkpoint at the junction of Luo River, the third task: deploy the army that is stationed primarily in the south, the 47th Corps into the checkpoint you built at Luo River." The Grand Marshal announced three tasks to Chu You all at once.
But before the Grand Marshal finished speaking, Chu You had already received the system task alert.
System: Prestige Task: Will you accept the task of exterminating 3,000 Beast Race near Luo River? Upon completion, you will receive +1,500 Yan Kingdom Prestige Value, Difficulty Level A.
System: Prestige Task: Will you accept the task of constructing a Level Three Checkpoint at the junction of Luo River? Upon completion, you will receive +2,500 Yan Kingdom Prestige Value, Difficulty Level S.
System: Prestige Task: Will you accept the task of deploying the stationed troops to occupy the completed Level Three Checkpoint? Upon completion, you will receive +500 Yan Kingdom Prestige Value, Difficulty Level Normal.
Chu You nodded inwardly. True to his character, the Grand Marshal was really generous. Chu You knew that the prestige rewards from tasks of the same type and difficulty were significantly less than those offered by the Grand Marshal.
There were costs and benefits. Chu You also knew that he was now completely under the influence of the Grand Marshal. If anything happened to the Grand Marshal, Chu You would also be in serious trouble, targeted by the official forces of Yan Kingdom.
But none of this mattered. The ultimate goal of the players was to replace the existing powers of their home countries.
"No problem at all, Grand Marshal. I’ll accept all of them. And you will receive good news soon," Chu You promised.
"Wonderful."
Just then, footsteps were heard from outside the door. Both of them looked towards the door at the same time.
They saw a young girl, Warm Monarch, holding a plate with a token on it. Behind her, two female servants were holding plates with clothes on them.
"This girl..." The Grand Marshal was speechless about his own daughter. He bitterly laughed at Chu You, "My daughter thinks she’s quite clever, but she needs to learn. On her plate is the token of your Baron position, and it has many useful effects. On the other plate are robes unique to the Baron. Please accept them."
Chu You likewise looked at the young girl and quietly gave his evaluation: "Brilliant!"
"Daoist, please accept this token," Warm Monarch said with a slight bow and a smile when she stood in front of Chu You.
Chu You stood up, put everything from the plates into his spatial backpack.
Turning to the Grand Marshal, he said, "I will take on the tasks now."
Hearing Chu You’s words, the Grand Marshal stood up. The young girl, Warm Monarch, looked surprised, "Leaving so soon?"
With a gentle smile at the young girl, the Grand Marshal added, "I look forward to your good news."
As the three of them stepped out of the door, Chu You said, "I request the Grand Marshal to stay." This gesture of respect was necessary because any action taken by a player could affect an NPC’s favorability value.
The Grand Marshal nodded with a smile and turned to the Grand Steward, "See off our esteemed guest!"
When Chu You and the Grand Steward disappeared from the Grand Marshal’s sight, the young girl, Warm Monarch, suddenly ran after them. Watching his daughter’s retreating figure, complex emotions welled up in the Grand Marshal’s eyes, "You’re a spiritual body, should I let you go or not?"
Looking towards the sky, the Grand Marshal continued, "If this boy achieves great accomplishments, I’ll give my daughter to him, even... even if he is a Cultivation Daoist, my daughter must become... his legal wife!" Remembering his previous conversation with Chu You, the Grand Marshal nodded approvingly and returned inside his residence.
"Grand Steward, you can go. I’m gonna see him off." When Chu You was walking through the flower garden, he heard Warm Monarch’s voice from behind.
The Grand Steward showed a helpless smile to Chu You, apologized, and went on another path.
Watching the excited daughter of a nobleman coming to his side, a feeling of sadness surged in Chu You’s heart.
In Chu You’s previous life, he found that most of the Hero NPCs in the game world suffered tragic fate. They only have one life, unlike players who can resurrect after death. Hero NPCs need to level up. They follow their host players to gain experience. When the host players are offline, Hero NPCs are unaffected, they either move around a certain range following the commands of their hosts or carry out tasks like gathering needed materials or withdrawing the gold coins which their hosts have sold at the trading house. These gold coins don’t go into Hero NPC’s own pockets but directly into their host players’.
When they are still weak, they often suffer mockery and bullying from other players, especially those players who are lucky but don’t have real strength. Their Hero NPCs are the most pitiful ones, often logging in to find their Hero NPCs gone, killed maliciously by certain players via a system notification!
If host players have abusive tendencies, or if they behave in such dark ways that displease Hero NPCs, Hero NPCs may leave the host player if their favorability falls below 30%. Or if the favorability hovers around 50%, a third player could sway the Hero NPC to their side. By the time host players notice their Hero NPC’s tendency to leave, it’s often too late. Their own Hero NPCs are more likely to be killed by them rather than other players.
