Chapter 236: Chapter 236: The little white rabbit picked up casually back then, all had an extraordinary background

Delphine stiffened upon hearing the words. She could be as close as sisters with Leah, but when it came to the unpredictable and dangerous Griffith Squire, she always kept the safest possible distance.

"That lousy piece of paper, why are you still holding onto it?" Leah gritted her teeth and said, "Stop scaring Delphine all day long. You’re so insufferable—be careful or no one will want you."

Griffith snorted coldly, the smile at the corner of his mouth deepening as he spoke in a low, threatening tone. "Leah Squire, if no one wants me, isn’t it because of you? Look at you—can’t carry anything heavy, can’t do any chores. If I marry a terrible sister-in-law, you might just starve to death."

"Ridiculous! Me, starve to death? With my looks, the line of men wanting to woo me in the Southern City would stretch all the way to the Northern Town. If you’re a washed-up old man that no one wants, don’t you dare blame me for it!" Leah shot back, refusing to show weakness. The siblings immediately went full throttle, bickering and dissing each other nonstop.

The servants witnessed the scene and immediately scattered. Meanwhile, Delphine struggled to hold back a laugh, not wanting to reveal the obvious truth—that despite their constant verbal sparring, these two thought more highly of each other than anyone else.

"Where exactly are you hiding that lousy piece of paper? So many years have passed, and you still use it to scare people." Leah remained fixated on that contract. Back then, when Delphine was stranded in the Golden Triangle, Griffith—her shameless brother—wanted to pursue her but was too proud to admit it. Instead, he coerced Delphine into signing an utterly humiliating and unequal agreement, making her his personal maid for a year.

"Ha." Griffith curled his lips into a lazy smile. That lousy piece of paper was worth a fortune. Not only could it potentially lure Delphine back, but if used to negotiate with Ignatius Leclair, it would bring an astronomical return.

Who would have thought that the little rabbit he picked up so casually years ago would turn out to have such extraordinary origins? The more Griffith saw Delphine, the more he liked her.

That little rabbit was truly the lucky star of their family.

"I was the one who broke the agreement first. I wonder, Mr. Squire, if you’d be willing to exchange that contract for something else?" Delphine bit her lip as she asked.

"If you’re unwilling to be my maid, you could leave Ignatius Leclair instead." Griffith smiled lazily, his expression carefree, but the deep darkness in his peach blossom eyes betrayed his true intentions.

Delphine fell silent instantly, weighing the comparative dangers of Griffith and Ignatius in her mind. After a moment of thought, she chose continued silence.

"Pfft, even Ignatius Leclair—the polished scoundrel—makes you seem inadequate. Griffith Squire, how do you have the audacity to keep your reputation in the Southern City?" Leah jeered mercilessly.

"If you dare to mock your brother again, I’ll arrange blind dates for you starting tomorrow—ten of them," Griffith threatened darkly.

Leah instantly clammed up, though it took considerable effort to suppress her outrage.

Soon, the servants began serving dinner. The three of them ate together, no longer bringing up the matter of the contract.

All evening, Griffith’s gaze bore into Delphine, leaving her restless and unable to sit still. Back when Delphine escaped from the Golden Triangle with Leah’s help, she remained somewhat guilty toward Griffith, who had saved her life. After dinner, Delphine stood up, intending to head back to the Leclair Residence.

Leah wasn’t well-suited to drafty walks, so Griffith stood up to escort Delphine instead.

From the Squire Manor to the front gate, there was a dimly lit stretch of pathway. The manor grounds were scattered with emerald foliage and clusters of delicate flowers. Even as deep autumn set in, faint traces of floral fragrances lingered in the air. Delphine walked along the edge of the pathway lights, her back heating under the intensity of Griffith’s unwavering gaze.

Perhaps she was walking too quickly; just as she neared the gate, her foot slipped, catching on a flower pot that extended from the edge of the ground lights.

"Careful." His voice, rich and seductive like fine wine, cut through the night. Griffith extended a hand to steady her arm. His palm, warm and firm, wrapped around hers but showed no sign of releasing its grip.
