Chapter 286: Chapter 167: Off to Sea Fishing_4
Lin Yang didn’t mind; they were just there to buy some accessories and such. For the main sea fishing rods, he directly used the ones from the guidebook.
After entering the store, they found not only sea rods but also lure rods for sale. It did make sense, as fundamentally, lure rods and sea rods are similar in structure, both consisting of a pole with a fishing reel attached.
The only difference is that lure rods can use baitcasting reels, while sea rods are paired with spinning reels. Furthermore, sea rods are thicker and come in more models, as they are designed for different fish.
Lin Yang was not interested in the fishing rods or fishing lines here; he just purchased some lead sinkers and other weight-related items, spending just over a hundred yuan in total.
When they left the fishing gear shop, the owner went from an initial secret delight to cursing under his breath.
After getting their fishing equipment sorted out, Lin Yang and his group made another trip to the seafood market and bought two kilograms of those small Banded Shrimp.
These shrimp are scientifically known as Banded Shrimp, also called Grass Shrimp, Nine-section Shrimp, Flower Shrimp, Ghost Shrimp, and Black Tiger Shrimp...
Indeed, the Black Tiger Shrimp that many Japanese restaurants use to impress customers are actually international Banded Shrimp, which, after a stint abroad, return to sell their changed identity.
However, these shrimp were already being farmed in China in the 1980s, but at that time, people in China preferred White Shrimp, finding it tastier with a thinner shell and tenderer flesh. Consequently, many shrimp farmers who raised this variety gave it up after a few years.
Who would have thought that now, after being dressed in an exotic guise in Southeast Asia, the Banded Shrimp would become popular back home? So people are starting to farm them again.
That being said, apart from some people’s adulation for all things foreign, domestically produced shrimp are actually tastier than the imported ones, with firmer flesh and fewer impurities. In contrast, the flesh quality of imported shrimp does indeed tend to be inferior.
Regardless of whether they’re from home or abroad, wild Banded Shrimp are always the most delicious, but there are very few of them left in the wild nowadays.
Banded Shrimp are now one of the most commonly farmed species both in our country and worldwide. Some Banded Shrimp farmed in seaside enclosures are also called prawns.
Prawns are not the name of a specific kind of shrimp but refer to any shrimp cultivated in enclosures.
After purchasing two kilograms of small Banded Shrimp for bait, Lin Yang and two companions followed Xiao Wu to an old pier.
This pier was indeed quite old since the surface was still made of wood and looked long overdue for repairs. Walking on it produced creaking sounds, and it could no longer accommodate large ships.
Even iron boats that are seven or eight meters long couldn’t dock here, and now only very small wooden boats were found.
Perhaps it’s precisely because there’s no presence of modern technology that the water here appears to be in good condition.
Standing on the pier and looking down into the water, although the water was green with algae growing on the pillars below, the visibility wasn’t low. You could clearly see down to a depth of five or six meters, which is quite rare even in freshwater.
Xiao Wu had already made arrangements with the locals yesterday afternoon, reserving a small boat belonging to a fisherman.
Lin Yang and the others followed him with their gear and boarded the boat.
After they got on the boat, the fisherman didn’t head far out but simply moved the boat a little further from the pier, about ten to twenty meters away from the shoreline.
The small boat wasn’t large, so including the fisherman, it felt somewhat cramped with five people. However, it didn’t matter since today only Lin Yang and Li Xiaopeng would be fishing, using "Direct Fishing" techniques.
Direct Fishing means the bait isn’t cast out. Instead, the fishermen simply sit on the boat and lower the bait straight down into the water. This method is generally effective only for small fish because larger fish are usually wary and unlikely to be active under the boat, only the more gullible small fish would be.
After the two set up their fishing rods, they quickly hooked a small Banded Shrimp on each hook. There’s a knack for hooking shrimp; it must be hooked through the shrimp’s abdomen and not the head, so it stays alive underwater longer.
After hooking the shrimp, Lin Yang released the spinning reel, and the sinker quickly pulled the small Banded Shrimp downwards towards the seafloor. Soon, he could feel the shrimp hitting the bottom, then he lifted it up slightly again.
Li Xiaopeng, standing next to him, copied the technique and quickly learned this simple way of fishing.
Yue’er, who was sitting nearby and observed this fishing method similar to catching crayfish, blinked with curiosity, "Brother Yang, can you really catch fish this way?"
"Of course, just wait and see," Lin Yang smiled. Today he had opted not to live stream as it was just a casual day at the seaside, not serious sea fishing.
Xiao Wu and the fisherman at the bow, who were witnessing this fishing method for the first time, were skeptical. To them, catching fish from the sea in this way seemed difficult.
Sea fishing is very different from fishing on land. The ocean is vast, making it impossible to create a baited spot, and being at sea, the boat would also move slowly.
Only about ten minutes had passed, and Lin Yang’s location had already drifted seven or eight meters from where they dropped their bait, and the position of the bait had changed.
Just as Xiao Wu believed he wouldn’t catch any fish within an hour or two, suddenly his rod tip dipped, sinking slightly into the water.
