Chapter 629: Chapter 272: The Big Flounder

Lin Yang looked at the already full live fish bucket and asked, "Uncle Victor, I’ve had my fill. Are there any other types of fish nearby? Can we try something different?"

Getting seasick from continuous fishing isn’t an exaggeration at all.

At this point, his initial excitement had turned into boredom—as is typical for fishermen.

Victor, smiling, threw the just-unhooked Yellow croaker back into the sea and said, "Now do you believe what I said?"

"I believe you, it really is thrilling. The Yellow croaker resources around here are incredible; with such high density, why not have a specialized vessel commercially fish here? Yellow croakers are quite valuable in our country. Even if they aren’t in high demand in your country, you could still profit from exporting them."

Victor shook his head, "This is Sahalin, the most challenging area in the Far East Russia. There are only five months suitable for human activities each year. There are hardly any people, infrastructure is weak, and the cost of transporting goods from here to the inland exceeds the value of the goods themselves. Commercial fishing isn’t profitable, which naturally benefits us."

Lin Yang nodded, "Okay, I understand. Are there any other types of fish around here? Yellow croakers are too unchallenging; let’s try something else."

"In the shallow coastal waters, there are mostly Yellow croakers and Blackheads. If you want to fish for other species, I can take you to a farther spot where the water is deeper. You can catch cod and flounder there, but are you sure you want to go? It doesn’t seem like we brought motorized reels. It’s too tiring to reel manually in depths of over a hundred meters—you won’t last long enough to catch many fish."

If it’s deep-sea fishing, manual reeling is indeed very tiring, but Lin Yang didn’t mind; the experience of being out here was more important than the number of fish caught.

"Let’s go. We are leaving tomorrow anyway. Let’s just fish for fun for a while; we still have enough time."

"Alright, then I’ll take you to a deeper area." Seeing Lin Yang’s keen interest, Uncle Victor reluctantly agreed.

The fishing boat lifted anchor and then headed toward a deeper area.

After sailing for over an hour, the plants and river channels on the shore were no longer visible. All around, there was nothing but the vast ocean with its surging waves.

Lin Yang adjusted his drone to give the live stream a full panoramic view of their surroundings, and explained, "After more than an hour of sailing, we have now moved from the estuary to a region further from the shore, which, according to the map, should be part of the North Pacific.

After the recent explosive fishing of Yellow croakers, you must have enjoyed the show, and now we’ve reached a new spot to challenge different species."

"For deep-sea fishing, we can’t use the usual small-weight hooks like before. After consulting with Uncle Victor, I’ve decided to switch to Bottom Fishing."

"We’ll try to catch delicious cod and flounder. We didn’t bring motorized reels, so I’m not sure what we’ll catch using manual deep-water bottom fishing; just watch and see."

After addressing his audience, Lin Yang switched to a much stiffer sea fishing rod and quickly got to work.

Ideally, squid is a better bait for cod, but since none was prepared on board, he had to cut up Yellow croaker into chunks for bait.

After waiting for the boat to stabilize, he managed his fishing rig and let the bait sink down.

"Bottom Fishing is a very common method in sea fishing, especially in deep-sea fishing. This technique mainly targets fish near the seabed in deep areas. Since the water is quite deep, it requires a heavy weight. We’re currently using a two-kilogram lead sinker. Right now, the line is extending further, already at 130 meters and still unspooling. According to Uncle Victor, the water depth here is around 180-200 meters...."

After continuing to let out the line for a while, it finally hit the bottom. Lin Yang tried to tighten the line a bit; no fish yet, but the sheer weight of the sinker in deep water was already palpably firm.

He tensed the fishing line and placed the fishing rod onto the boat’s railing, and then took a deep breath, all set and just waiting for a bite.

"Generally, in deep waters, the density of fish is likely to be lower than in shallow waters, but the fish are often much bigger. Let’s set up the fishing gear and rest for a bit; they won’t bite so soon."

As Lin Yang spoke, he sat down on the platform behind him.

Before he could finish, the fishing rod sticking out over the gunwale began to nod, then bent sharply downwards.

"Wow, a fish so soon?" mumbled Lin Yang as he quickly got up to fight the fish.

He was still okay with letting the line out, but he soon experienced the inconvenience Uncle Victor mentioned once the fish started to reel in.

The deep water and the heavy weight significantly increased the resistance after hooking the fish. He swung his shoulders laboriously reeling in—over fifty meters more to go. Gritting his teeth, he continued reeling and finally pulled up the first fish.

It had a dark, slippery head, a mouth full of sharp teeth, and its back was covered with fine spots. It looked somewhat like a Big Mouth Bass, but was significantly larger.

"Cod! Looks to be around seven or eight kilograms; you’re quite lucky today!" Uncle Victor commented after a quick glance.

Lin Yang removed the fish hook and once again held up the fish to show it off in the live stream: "Haha, one rod down, one cod, and it’s a decent size!"

"Cod is even more prized than Blackheads. We’ve fished them quite a bit in our country—extremely delicious."

"It’s very tasty, doesn’t even need any processing. Just steam it in the pot with some garlic, absolutely delicious."
