Chapter 66: Chapter 66 He Left, and the Car Left
It was Guo Cuihua who walked a few steps, then remembered Cheng Zhiwei was still here, turned her head, and instructed, "Zhiwei, you and Ah Lin go stroll nearby, your dad and I will be right back, and oh, remember to wash the bowls."
The sound of her voice had barely settled when she was already far away.
Clutching half a bowl of noodles, Cheng Zhiwei stood there, dazed.
Zhou Lin lit a cigarette, and the smell of nicotine spread quickly.
The mountain air was fresh and chilly. Zhou Lin took a drag and felt much better in his stomach. He glanced at Cheng Zhiwei, who was still standing there foolishly and couldn’t help flicking her forehead with his finger, "You were supposed to wash the dishes, what are you spacing out for?"
Cheng Zhiwei glared at him annoyed and went off to the kitchen with the bowls and chopsticks.
A male classmate in charge of logistics saw Cheng Zhiwei, his face flushed, and he took the bowls from her hands and stuffed two hot eggs into them, "I can do it. These are for Professor Cheng and Professor Guo, but they probably won’t be back so soon, so you can eat them."
Cheng Zhiwei quickly said thank you.
The eggs were burning hot. Cheng Zhiwei had intended to take them straight back to her room, but upon seeing Zhou Lin still sitting in the courtyard, her steps faltered.
The eggs in her hand suddenly felt too hot to handle.
After a few seconds of hesitation, she walked over, extended her palm, and handed the egg to Zhou Lin, saying indifferently, "Eat."
She knew he didn’t have a taste for the food here. She could ignore him, but since he had come with her to pick up her parents, he had his own motives, yet the help was real. He deserved the egg.
The oval egg, with its pale white husk, lay in her palm, which had turned red from the heat, quiet and obedient.
Zhou Lin was suddenly reminded of how she had been in his arms not too long ago, just like a peeled egg, he thought.
"Not eating," he said, tilting his head slightly, his tone somewhat cold while taking a heavy drag on his cigarette.
He suddenly realized that ever since he heard Lin Yu’s words and tried to correct his view of Cheng Zhiwei, his thoughts had become more and more abnormal.
Thinking of her over an egg...
That was not normal.
It was also dangerous.
Cheng Zhiwei was unaware of the turmoil in Zhou Lin’s mind, and not wanting to waste words with him, she stuffed the egg in his hand, "Consider it a thank you for accompanying me on this trip."
Without his prior arrangements, she didn’t know if she would have gotten lost here alone.
The warmth in his palm was from the egg, yet it seemed to carry her body heat as well, making Zhou Lin’s mood even worse. He sneered with a cigarette in his mouth, "Your gratitude seems rather cheap."
Cheng Zhiwei, met with this sarcastic response despite her good intentions, snapped back, "Take it or leave it."
She turned and walked away.
Zhou Lin clenched the egg tightly in his hand, and his eyes darkened.
Professor Cheng and Guo Cuihua did not return, but students who did come back brought news of a discovery with great archaeological value. The two of them probably wouldn’t return until evening.
Zhou Lin’s face turned sour immediately; clearly, he didn’t want to stay here.
Enduring it for a day had already been his limit.
Moreover, he found that his attitude towards Cheng Zhiwei was changing, and he resisted such a change.
"Call them and tell them we’re leaving tonight, and catch the morning flight tomorrow."
Cheng Zhiwei pinched her palm, attempting to negotiate with him, "One more day..."
She had barely spoken when Zhou Lin’s phone rang.
Cheng Zhiwei saw the name "Zhenzhen" on the screen, and the rest of her words were swallowed back down.
Zhou Lin stepped aside to answer the call, and in the next second, his face changed dramatically, and his voice grew urgent, "Is it serious?"
Not knowing what Seo Zhenzhen had said, Zhou Lin became agitated, "Immediately contact the medical team over there, I’ll come back soon."
The phone call ended.
Zhou Lin nearly commanded Cheng Zhiwei, "Get your parents back here right now, we’re leaving immediately."
Cheng Zhiwei stood stunned, "Can’t you wait?"
"No," Zhou Lin refused flatly, his voice cold, "Zhenzhen had an accident, I must go back immediately."
Cheng Zhiwei was then left speechless.
Seo Zhenzhen... no one could surpass Seo Zhenzhen’s place in his heart.
She could only ask a student to take her, thought for a moment, then afraid the student would not explain clearly, she gritted her teeth and followed.
The woods were hurried through, difficult to navigate.
Fortunately, it was only five kilometers away, and Cheng Zhiwei quickly arrived at the place.
Before she had a chance to ask where Cheng Shang and Guo Cuihua were, she heard a clamor inside, a multitude of voices crowded in from all directions.
"Bitten by a snake."
"Tighten it quickly."
"Serum, give an injection immediately."
"Hurry, take her to the hospital."
Cheng Zhiwei ran inside, an ominous premonition instantly expanding in her heart, "Who was bitten by the snake?"
"Professor Guo."
Cheng Zhiwei’s ears rang, and she stood there dazed, stunned still until someone bumped into her; only then did she come to her senses and stumbled forward.
Guo Cuihua was being carried out on a stretcher; her pants rolled up to her knees, revealing two small puncture wounds on her calf, still bleeding.
Cheng Zhiwei’s mind wound up tight, her voice trembling, "Mom."
Guo Cuihua grabbed her hand, "Zhiwei, why did you run all the way here?"
"Mom, don’t talk, don’t talk," Cheng Zhiwei held Guo Cuihua’s hand tighter, her words speedy with fear, "Don’t be afraid, mom, Zhou Lin drove the SUV, it’s very fast, we will reach the hospital soon."
Cheng Shang followed behind, tottering, her face pale to the extreme, tears streaming down, blurring her vision so she couldn’t see the path. She wiped them away with the back of her hand and kept running, stumbling every few steps.
After running for a while, her head cleared a bit, and she quickly calmed down, instructing the students to continue carrying Guo Cuihua, meanwhile telling others to watch over Cheng Shang and proceed slowly to prevent any more accidents.
She herself ran down the mountain like the wind.
The mountain path was wet and slippery, and as she hurried, she fell several times, getting mud all over her clothes, even on her face and hair, looking utterly disheveled.
However, when she reached the yard, she found it completely empty.
Zhou Lin was gone.
The SUV was gone, too.
In that moment, even though she was covered in sweat from running, she felt as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over her from head to toe, chilling her to the bone.
The boy in charge of cooking came out of the kitchen, and upon seeing Cheng Zhiwei’s state, he startled and started to stammer, "Sister, you’re back."
"Where is he?" Cheng Zhiwei burst out these words from her throat.
"Right, your husband told me to let you know, he had an emergency and had to leave first, he will send another car to pick you up tomorrow... Sister, why are you crying?"
Cheng Zhiwei wiped her tears fiercely, crying, crying, what’s the use of crying, crying can’t save her mother’s life.
In that short time, Guo Cuihua had already been brought down.
Faced with the empty yard, everyone stood dumbfounded.
"Just today, the cars had to go transport equipment, both vehicles had left."
"The grocery shopping car..."
"Still no idea when it will come back."
