Chapter 234: Chapter 234: I Want a Child, You Want a Divorce Certificate, Fair Isn’t It?
"She doesn’t want children."
"Ah?"
Wang Mei was stunned, thinking she had heard wrong, "Young Madam... doesn’t want children?"
"Hmm, she said if she were to have children, she’d want a divorce," Zhou Lin laughed self-deprecatingly. "I’ve tried my best to make it up to her, but she’s pushing me to this."
He sat in the living room all night, his thoughts in turmoil, his mind repeatedly conjuring the indifferent expression Cheng Zhiwei wore when she forced him to choose between having children or getting a divorce.
Her heart had grown so cold.
"Does Young Master want the children or the Young Madam?" Wang Mei asked from behind.
"Both," Zhou Lin answered.
He wanted both, but after pondering all night, he found no way to have it all.
Cheng Zhiwei was right; the child would be in her womb, and if she didn’t want it, there were countless ways she could end it.
The man who was decisive in the business world was now helpless.
Wang Mei bowed and said, "Young Master, you have always been authoritarian towards the Young Madam, never respecting her wishes, especially regarding the matter with the Seo Zhenzhen sisters. You’ve always compromised the Young Madam. She may have lost her memory, but do the things you’ve done simply cease to exist?"
"Don’t mind my bluntness, but which lady outside isn’t treated with dignity? Only Miss Zhiwei has been continuously ground down by you, and even later on, her mental health began to deteriorate. Do you think these wounds can be healed in three months?"
Wang Mei’s words were sharp but reasonable, "You know what the Young Madam wants. If you truly care about her and want to make it up to her, you should make her happy."
Having said that, Wang Mei went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
Zhou Lin unconsciously reached for a cigarette, only to grasp at air. His expression turned cold and stiff, the sweater becoming more frigid from the chill.
After standing for over half an hour, just as Wang Mei was about to remind him that staying in the draft much longer would cause a cold, Zhou Lin had already closed the window and ordered the servants to clean the living room thoroughly and ensure that all traces of smoke were gone before the Young Madam woke up.
He picked up his phone from the coffee table, dialed Secretary Zhang’s contract, and instructed in a quiet, indifferent tone, "Prepare the divorce papers for me."
Three seconds later, Secretary Zhang’s voice came through, "Understood."
Wang Mei, standing at the kitchen doorway, overheard clearly. Her tense nerves relaxed only upon hearing those few words, and she turned back to continue preparing breakfast.
She knew Cheng Zhiwei wanted a divorce, and that Zhou Lin wouldn’t let Cheng Zhiwei have an abortion, as it would harm her body and only add frost to their already fragile relationship.
At eight o’clock, Cheng Zhiwei put on a thick sleeping gown over her nightdress and, wearing soft slippers, came downstairs. She had not slept well, and faint blue shadows underlined her eyes.
She sat down at the dining table and only then lifted her gaze to look at the man opposite, naturally noticing the red veins in his eyes and the blue stubble on his chin.
She picked up a spoon and sipped her porridge quietly, waiting for Zhou Lin to speak.
Zhou Lin peeled an egg and placed it in front of her, his expression unreadable.
Cheng Zhiwei looked at the tender egg, her voice cool, "I’m waiting for your response."
Zhou Lin pursed his lips, anger constricting his throat, "Cheng Zhiwei, are you taking advantage of my current feelings for you to do as you please?"
His anger flared.
But Cheng Zhiwei responded indifferently, "You’ve misunderstood. I have never dared to think I could take advantage of you. I still possess that much self-awareness."
That day on the boat, she had seen the harsh reality clearly.
"Eat the egg," Zhou Lin said with a dark, ugly expression.
Cheng Zhiwei didn’t eat; she just quietly watched him, waiting for his answer.
At that moment, a servant brought Secretary Zhang in.
As soon as Secretary Zhang entered, he felt the tense and oppressive atmosphere. He slightly bowed and handed Zhou Lin a folder, "I’ve brought the items."
Zhou Lin said indifferently, "Let her take a look first."
"Yes." Secretary Zhang pulled out a document and passed it to Cheng Zhiwei, then handed the rest to Zhou Lin.
Cheng Zhiwei instantly saw the words "Divorce Agreement" on the cover. Her tense emotions subtly relaxed, and she began to read carefully.
Five minutes later, she closed the agreement and handed it to Secretary Zhang, "I don’t want the house, nor do I want so much money. Five million will do."
Although she had amnesia, she was aware that she didn’t have much in terms of property when she married Zhou Lin. The suite in Sparkling Sky City worth fifty million and the additional fifty million mentioned in the agreement were all Zhou Lin’s assets.
Though to Zhou Lin, a hundred million might just be the cost of a small project, she couldn’t accept it nor did she want to.
Secretary Zhang didn’t take the agreement; he waited for Zhou Lin’s decision.
Zhou Lin spoke without expression, "Cheng Zhiwei, this is not for you; it’s for the child in your belly. Or are you saying, you’re just tricking me into divorcing you, and once we divorce, you’ll immediately abort this child?"
Cheng Zhiwei replied indifferently, "I won’t."
Zhou Lin scoffed, his gaze cold and piercing as he slammed the folder onto the dining table, "With this attitude of drawing clear lines, I highly doubt it."
Cheng Zhiwei didn’t argue with him. She was silent for several seconds then asked Secretary Zhang for a pen and signed her name.
Her goal was divorce, not to quibble over details.
Besides, if Zhou Lin was willing to give so much, she would take it. It wasn’t like she was the one insisting on it.
Zhou Lin signed the document, and Secretary Zhang collected the files.
Zhou Lin smiled without warmth, "I have a condition."
Cheng Zhiwei furrowed her brows, "What is it?"
"I’ve already agreed to the divorce, but given your attitude towards me, I highly suspect that you’ll abort the child immediately after the divorce. Therefore, my condition is this: I will hand over the divorce certificate to you once the child is safely born."
"Zhou Lin," Cheng Zhiwei angrily stood up.
Zhou Lin looked at her slowly, casually leaning back in his chair, "Be gentle with your movements, or if something happens to the child, you won’t be able to divorce at all."
Cheng Zhiwei was so angry she was practically heaving. She knew this divorce wouldn’t be easy.
"I want the child, you want the divorce certificate." Zhou Lin didn’t even lift his eyelids but spoke with a cold smirk, "It’s fair, isn’t it? You don’t expect me to lose a wife and also not have the child, do you?"
Cheng Zhiwei clenched her fists, nearly grinding her teeth, "If you want a child, plenty of women are willing to bear one for you, why must you fixate on the one in my belly?"
"Because as of now, you are still legally my wife, Zhou Lin, and naturally, I value the child in your belly."
"You are truly shameless."
"You can refuse, Cheng Zhiwei." Zhou Lin suddenly intensified his tone, his gaze chilling as he stared at her belly, "The slightest mishap with this child, and you can forget about getting a divorce for life. You’ll forever be the wife of Zhou Lin."
Zhou Lin suppressed the pain in his heart. Saying this made him feel as if the identity of his wife was nothing but shackles, a prison.
But he hid those emotions well, only lifting his chin, his face stern and the chill on his face biting, indifferent and disdainful.
If Cheng Zhiwei had her memories, she would know that this was exactly how Zhou Lin behaved before she lost her memory, always using people close to her to threaten her with his superior, disdainful demeanor.
