Chapter 146: Chapter 146: She is my wife, it’s only natural that I come to see her.
Cheng Zhiwei and Wang Mei moved things to Cheng Zhiyin’s house, where Cheng Zhiyin had just hired a cleaning company to tidy up. She even planned to replace the old furniture with new ones the next day.
This home, burdened with her painful memories, demanded a complete makeover before she could feel at ease.
When Cheng Zhiwei arrived, she saw that even the beds were gone, leaving only a sofa to sleep on. After exchanging glances for several seconds, they finally squeezed onto the couch together.
After making do with the couch for the night, the two of them headed to the furniture mall the next day, accompanied by Guo Cuihua.
Cheng Zhiwei’s face injuries were more severe, so she wore a mask and hat. The three of them shopped around and picked up many items.
By afternoon, the home was clean and had been completely transformed.
Guo Cuihua was cooking in the kitchen with Cheng Zhiyin assisting, while Cheng Zhiwei nibbled on an apple on the side, "Did he let you come over?"
’He’ referred to Cheng Shang.
Guo Cuihua said indifferently, "I’m here to see my daughter, what’s it to him?"
Clearly, their interaction at home the day before hadn’t been pleasant.
"When is he leaving?" Cheng Zhiwei asked again; she truly felt that it was better for Cheng Shang to be busy with work outside.
Guo Cuihua replied, "He might be leaving in the next few days, but I won’t go. After the snakebite incident, I’ve applied for leave from school."
After all, her going would only mean dealing with paperwork, better not to go at all.
"That’s just great, my sister and I will be fortunate to have your cooking," Cheng Zhiwei said happily.
Guo Cuihua made a full table of dishes, delicious in both flavor and appearance, which Cheng Zhiwei enjoyed snacking on.
However, the meal was far too lavish for just the three of them. Cheng Zhiwei asked, "Is anyone else coming?"
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Cheng Zhiwei opened the door to see Meng Qiancheng holding a bouquet of roses, smiling gently, "Zhiwei, congratulations on your discharge."
Cheng Zhiwei immediately guessed that Guo Cuihua had invited Meng Qiancheng, and although she felt somewhat displeased, she didn’t show it and accepted the roses, inviting him in.
Meng Qiancheng took off his coat, rolled up his sleeves, and started helping in the kitchen, acting as if he were anything but a stranger.
Cheng Zhiyin slipped out with an apple and asked Cheng Zhiwei in a low voice, "Why is he here?"
"It must be Mom who asked him to come."
Cheng Zhiwei felt helpless; she had made it very clear that she and Meng Qiancheng could not be together, yet her mother was enthusiastically trying to match them up.
It was a difficult situation.
She looked inside and saw Meng Qiancheng busily assisting Guo Cuihua, performing tasks in an orderly manner, both of them chatting and beaming with smiles.
Cheng Zhiyin said with a smile, "It looks like Mom really approves of him."
"Her approval doesn’t equal mine, and besides, you heard what happened at the hospital. I won’t be with him," Cheng Zhiwei said.
"I thought what you said that time was out of anger."
"Some of it was, but more of it was the truth." Cheng Zhiwei took another bite of her apple and sighed with a hint of dissatisfaction, "I’ve never felt more than sibling affection for him, and now..."
Cheng Zhiwei paused, choosing not to continue.
There were some things she didn’t wish to explain too explicitly.
Anyway, she would forever regard Meng Qiancheng as nothing more than a brother.
Having recently experienced a failed marriage herself, and seeing her sister’s marriage in turmoil, Cheng Zhiyin was even less inclined to persuade Cheng Zhiwei, "If marriage is going to be like this, then it might be better to go without."
Cheng Zhiwei hugged Cheng Zhiyin, "Sister, things will get better and better for us."
Cheng Zhiyin nodded vigorously, "Mm."
Just then, the doorbell rang,
Cheng Zhiwei, holding a half-eaten apple, asked in confusion, "Did mom invite guests over?"
While speaking, she opened the door and her expression immediately faded, "What are you doing here?"
She then looked surprised at the person beside him, "Aunt Wang?"
Wang Mei smiled and nodded, "Young Madam, you look much better."
Zhou Lin lowered his eyes and focused on her cheeks, still a bit pale, but obviously more spirited.
He pushed her gently and stride inside, "Mom said to have Wang Mei take care of you, so I brought her over."
Originally, Wang Mei was planning to return to Lin Yu, but Lin Yu was still worried about Cheng Zhiwei’s health, so she arranged for Wang Mei to come here. Just as Wang Mei was about to come over, she ran into Zhou Lin, who insisted on bringing her here.
Wang Mei knew he wanted an excuse to see Cheng Zhiwei, so she didn’t refuse and came along.
"Young Madam, Madam said your health hasn’t fully recovered, so I must take responsibility for you," Wang Mei said with a smile as she headed to the kitchen, "I’ve been studying several new soups recently, I’ll make some for Young Madam to try."
As she talked, she had already opened the kitchen door, running into Guo Cuihua and Meng Qiancheng.
For a moment, everyone was taken aback.
"Madam Cheng." Wang Mei realized and nodded slightly, "Madam asked me to come and take care of Young Madam."
Guo Cuihua "oh oh" responded, "Dinner is almost ready, sit for now, we’ll eat together in a bit."
At this mealtime, she wouldn’t naturally ask Wang Mei to leave. Besides, Wang Mei took great care of Cheng Zhiwei at the hospital, and Guo Cuihua had always wanted to thank her.
Wang Mei walked in and naturally took over the tasks from Meng Qiancheng’s hands, "Let me help."
Meng Qiancheng was somewhat cold, "That’s okay. Weiwei is about to divorce Zhou Lin, she’s no longer Young Madam Zhou. She doesn’t need your care."
He disliked Wang Mei calling her Young Madam, implying a good relationship with Zhou Lin.
Having seen much in her time, Wang Mei would not be embarrassed by a few words from Meng Qiancheng. She skillfully handled the ingredients and said with neither servility nor overbearingness, "Taking care of Young Madam is Madam’s wish. Moreover, Young Madam’s sister is also not well right now, so I’m looking after both to relieve Madam Cheng’s burden."
"This is the Cheng Family’s house, not the Zhou Family’s. Outsiders have no place to interfere in Cheng Family matters." Meng Qiancheng’s tone grew stern, along with slight contempt, "You’re just a servant, and even less qualified..."
"Qiancheng, go and rest." Guo Cuihua interrupted Meng Qiancheng’s words.
Meng Qiancheng paused for a moment, then still put down what he was doing and obediently left.
As soon as he came out of the kitchen, he saw Zhou Lin standing in front of Cheng Zhiwei.
His face darkened and he walked over quickly, shielding Cheng Zhiwei behind him, and said very unpleasantly, "What are you doing here?"
Zhou Lin lifted the corners of his mouth, scoffing with a hint of contempt, "Shouldn’t I be asking Doctor Meng that? What are you doing here?"
Meng Qiancheng laughed scornfully, "I’m a doctor, and Weiwei is still my sister, it’s only right for me to visit her."
"She’s my wife, it’s even more right for me to visit her."
The atmosphere tensed up in just a few exchanges.
Cheng Zhiwei’s heart had long been wounded by Zhou Lin, and now in their confrontation, she unhesitatingly chose Meng Qiancheng, saying calmly, "I’m sorry, Young President Zhou, we’re busy at home today, so we won’t invite you in for tea."
Her words carried a distant politeness.
Zhou Lin’s eyes darkened, and a trace of coldness swept across his lips, she was defending Meng Qiancheng in front of him?
