Chapter 563: Chapter 534 Sympathy, Striking Home with a Single Comment_1

In the study.

"Lifang, your parents are not in the Capital City, and in theory, your Second Uncle should take care of you. But I am not capable and can’t help you," Second Uncle Jiang spoke knowingly, realizing this was not a situation he could interfere with, so he was straightforward, making his stance clear to his niece.

It wasn’t that he didn’t want to help, but rather that he had no qualifications or ability to do so!

Although Jiang Lifang felt somewhat sad, she was more so grateful to her Second Uncle, saying, "Second Uncle, I understand your difficulties. Though I don’t know what has happened, both my in-laws are old revolutionaries and now they have been detained, which shows the seriousness of the situation. You telling me all that you know, I am very grateful for that."

Compared to others, Second Uncle Jiang had already done quite well.

Seeing his niece speak like this, Second Uncle Jiang was slightly relieved and said, "I’ve heard some things, and I’ve also made private inquiries. They say the Huo Family has colluded with the enemy and betrayed the country."

"Impossible!" Jiang Lifang exclaimed, "Second Uncle, although I am a daughter-in-law and am not qualified to listen to the Huo men discuss their work, I do know that it is impossible for the Huo Family to collude with the enemy and betray the country. The Huo Family would never be in collusion with that person. In fact, they could be considered enemies. You should know, my son Yingjie nearly died at that person’s hands."

Seeing his niece getting agitated, Second Uncle Jiang hurriedly pacified her, "Lifang, don’t be anxious, listen to me first. Emotionally, I am willing to believe you. But my belief doesn’t help the Huo Family, we need to convince the top leaders! The evidence is conclusive, hence all members of the Huo Family have been arrested."

"Second Uncle, what evidence are they?" Jiang Lifang asked with concern; this was her greatest concern.

"It’s the secret letters between your father-in-law and that person, more than a dozen of them," Second Uncle Jiang revealed, "The letters contain details of the conspiracies discussed between your father-in-law and that person."

"Impossible!" Jiang Lifang shook her head repeatedly, "There couldn’t be such letters."

"But those letters were indeed found in the secret compartment of your father-in-law’s study," Second Uncle Jiang continued, "The handwriting matches your father-in-law’s exactly, and many details align with the Huo Family’s prior actions. The evidence is incontrovertible and irrefutable."

Jiang Lifang didn’t know what to say; the fact that those items were found in her father-in-law’s study was indisputable.

Even if someone had set a trap, how could those letters have ended up in the most secret place of the Huo household?

"Then, Second Uncle, do you know where my in-laws and my elder brother’s family have been detained?" Jiang Lifang inquired, "And since the Huo Family’s ordeal began, who has been jumping around causing trouble?"

After some thought, Second Uncle Jiang replied, "The Zheng Family, Feng Family, and Xu Family. I don’t know where your in-laws are, but I do know that Huo Yingjun and his wife, as well as Huo Yingqi, are being held in the Public Security Bureau’s detention center near the Huo Family Old Mansion."

Jiang Lifang nodded and thanked him, "Thank you, Second Uncle. Do you know anything else?"

Second Uncle Jiang hesitated, then decided to remind his niece; after all, they were family, and he didn’t want to see the Huo Family fall, "I found out that Zhou Yuanyuan from the Zhou Family has been seen around the Capital City, closely associated with the Zheng Family."

Zhou Yuanyuan?

Jiang Lifang was shocked and asked, "Second Uncle, do you know if this Zhou Yuanyuan has met with Hou Yingqi?"

Second Uncle Jiang was taken aback and asked in return, "Are you suspecting that Zhou Yuanyuan is using Huo Yingqi?"

"That fool Yingqi just loves to listen to Zhou Yuanyuan. She’d think even Zhou Yuanyuan’s fart smells sweet," Jiang Lifang said angrily, "If Zhou Yuanyuan appeared in Yanjing, she would definitely contact Yingqi. As for how she used Yingqi, I can only guess."

Yingqi was just that kind of person, so upon hearing about Zhou Yuanyuan, Jiang Lifang’s first thought was that Yingqi might have brought back those items, although she didn’t know what pretense Zhou Yuanyuan used to deceive Yingqi.

Old Master Huo once said that if Yingqi continued to act in such a disloyal way, the Huo Family would sooner or later follow in the Zhou Family’s footsteps.

The words had come true.

"Oh, that’s all I know, and I’ve told you everything," Second Uncle Jiang said, "I don’t know anything more."

"Thank you, Second Uncle," Jiang Lifang expressed her gratitude, "At least now I have a general idea, instead of being completely in the dark."

"Sigh!" Second Uncle Jiang sighed, "I don’t know whether your coming here is a blessing or a curse!"

Jiang Lifang managed a bitter smile, "Whether it’s a blessing or a curse, we have to face the difficulties. We can’t just abandon our family. Second Uncle, I have things to take care of, so I must be going, take care of yourself."

"Lifang, don’t rush off, have something to eat before you go," Second Uncle Jiang urged, unable to help with the situation but also unwilling to let his niece leave on an empty stomach.

Jiang Lifang knew her Second Uncle meant well, but she really wasn’t in the mood to eat and shook her head, "No need, Second Uncle, I really have things to take care of. Once this is all over and the Huo Family is safe, I’ll treat you to a meal."

Second Uncle Jiang felt a bittersweet pang in his heart and finally said dryly, "Lifang, don’t blame your Second Uncle for being powerless. If I could, I wouldn’t sit by and do nothing."

For Second Uncle Jiang to do that much was already commendable, and Jiang Lifang was grateful. The Huo Family’s situation was too grave, and she didn’t want to drag her Second Uncle into it.

"Second Uncle, I really don’t blame you," Jiang Lifang said, "The Huo Family will solve its own problems. If it’s fated that we can’t resolve them, then there’s no helping it and we won’t implicate others."

After Jiang Lifang had left, Second Aunt Jiang emerged from the kitchen and asked, "Why did Lifang leave so soon?"

"With your face looking so grim, Lifang, who is proud and high-spirited, of course, wouldn’t stay to eat," Second Uncle Jiang replied, "It’s a relief that Lifang is understanding. If it were someone else, they would’ve resented us by now."

"That’s better than us getting caught too!" Second Aunt Jiang retorted, "In any case, we should keep our distance in the future. We’ve got a whole family to think about, a dozen mouths to feed, so you can’t afford to be soft-hearted! We can’t meddle in this, we can’t meddle!"

Second Uncle Jiang had made things clear to Jiang Lifang, but his wife’s words still made it hard for him to accept. He said, "Enough, I’ve already spoken to Lifang. We can’t help. You don’t need to act so detached. When the Huo Family was flourishing, you weren’t like this at all!"

"Times have changed," Second Aunt Jiang said bluntly, "From now on, keep a distance from the Huo Family."

Consumed with guilt, Second Uncle Jiang could only turn and leave the study.

The attitude of Second Uncle Jiang and Second Aunt Jiang was representative of many in Yanjing.

Some sympathized in their hearts; others kept their distance. Either way, very few were willing to extend help.
