Chapter 542: Chapter 513 Marriage, Inquiry_1
However, this was only a small part.
By the afternoon, there were even more kids at the door.
He Tiantian saw dozens of children at the doorstep for the first time and was so scared that she dared not go outside.
"Mom, why are there so many kids in the village now?" He Tiantian complained with a frown, and upon entering the house, she took out all the White Rabbit candies from the room.
Wang Shuping smiled and said, "Now in the village, every year there are dozens or even a hundred kids born. Naturally, over two or three years, the number has increased a lot."
"If those kids don’t leave, I’ll take all the candies we have at home, distribute them, tell them that’s all we have, and beg them not to come again." He Tiantian was scared, fearful that all the children would come over.
"Hehe, go ahead," Wang Shuping said, "be nice to the children, don’t be harsh!"
He Tiantian nodded and replied, "I know, Mom!"
He Tiantian took out the last two bags of White Rabbit milk candies she had at home and said, "This is the last of it, once it’s gone, that’s all. Got it?"
While He Tiantian was speaking, more kids kept coming non-stop.
Initially, He Tiantian wanted to give two pieces per child, but seeing so many kids, she decided to give one piece each.
The children were happy to have candy and were not greedy.
After getting their sweets, they ran off. Some clever ones complimented He Tiantian on her good looks and, if lucky, got two pieces of candy.
Finally, after sending all the kids off, He Tiantian was left with two pieces of candy in her hand. She turned her head to see Huo Yingjie standing not far away with a smile that was not exactly a smile, and she unwrapped one and put it in his mouth.
"Mr. Huo, have you had enough of a laugh?" He Tiantian said, wrinkling her nose. This guy didn’t come out to help, just stood by watching the fun.
"Haha!" Huo Yingjie chuckled, enjoying the fragrant and sweet White Rabbit milk candy.
He Tiantian ate one piece herself—the one piece Jiang Lifang had bought for her.
Wang Shuping saw that He Tiantian had finished distributing the candy and covered her mouth with a laugh, "It’s good that you’re done distributing. You’ve gotten engaged, and because Yingjie didn’t come over, we didn’t distribute candies. It’s nice he’s here now, giving out some candy, makes it a cheerful occasion."
"Isn’t that a bit too little?" Huo Yingjie said, "Should we go to the county town to buy some more?"
"No need," He Tiantian said, "when we get married, we’ll buy more then."
Upon hearing her daughter’s words, Wang Shuping felt a bit embarrassed and gave her daughter a tap, "You’re a big girl, isn’t it embarrassing to talk about such things!"
He Tiantian was quite speechless. A man is of age to marry, a woman is of age to wed—what’s there to be shy about!
"Go do your chores," Wang Shuping shooed He Tiantian away, "Yingjie, you stay."
"Alright, then." He Tiantian gave Huo Yingjie a puzzled look and went to do housework.
Huo Yingjie stepped forward to support Wang Shuping and said, "Aunt Wang, let me help you to a seat over there."
"That would trouble you," Wang Shuping said, "Tiantian, that girl, is blunt and forthright. You grew up together from when you were little, you understand this girl even better than we do. Since Tiantian boldly spoke up today, I want to ask, do you two have any plans?"
The mother-in-law had given a timeline: After the child turned one-year-old, they must go abroad.
If He Tiantian wasn’t married by then, she would also have to go along.
Huo Yingjie said with a smile, "This time coming here, my parents also talked to me about the marriage. The marriage that had already been arranged was postponed due to my work. Recently, because of my injury, my parents didn’t say much, but they had plans. If I couldn’t recover, they would adopt Tiantian as their daughter; if I recovered, then they would start handling the wedding arrangements."
Wang Shuping couldn’t help but feel a pang listening to Huo Yingjie’s words. If Yingjie couldn’t recover, they as parents couldn’t let their daughter become a widow for life.
It was rare for the Huo Family to think this way!
"How are you doing now?" Wang Shuping asked with concern. "I was too overjoyed yesterday, and I didn’t have the time to ask you carefully."
"I’ve already recovered," Huo Yingjie said. "And the report for my marriage application has been approved. I’ve come this time to discuss the wedding details on behalf of my parents. Whatever demands you have, please feel free to mention them."
As long as Huo Yingjie was fine, that was more important than anything else.
"We don’t have any demands on this side. Your family’s conditions are good, and ours are decent too; the two children won’t be wronged," Wang Shuping said. "But what about your work in the future? Will you still work at the Weapons Research Institute?"
Huo Yingjie chuckled, "I’ve taken leave under the pretext of poor health, planning to recuperate for a year or half. Moreover, I’ve received news from Yanjing that education must not be neglected; primary and secondary schools have already started, and I guess university admissions will start soon too. I also want to take advantage of this time to study well and get into university to read more."
Upon hearing this, Wang Shuping was overjoyed. She always liked children who loved studying and said, "Tiantian only finished middle school, and you’ve completed high school; indeed, you both should study more. If the universities are holding unified admissions, then you should pursue education. After all, it’s for building the country, and after completing studies, you would be able to do scientific research better!"
"Aunt Wang is right," Huo Yingjie said. It’s okay to build the country, but it’s not acceptable without fair treatment; he wasn’t willing to put up with that sort of humiliation.
Huo Yingjie was always polite and well-mannered, which greatly endeared him to Wang Shuping.
Wang Shuping now completely had the mindset of a mother-in-law sizing up her future son-in-law, and the more she looked, the more satisfied she became.
When He Jingyu came back, he saw his daughter busy in the kitchen, and his wife and future son-in-law were chatting and laughing.
Seeing He Jingyu arrive, Huo Yingjie quickly got up and diligently fetched a basin of water for Uncle He, saying, "Uncle He, please wash your face."
"Good, good!" He Jingyu initially felt that Huo Yingjie didn’t care enough for his daughter, but seeing him diligently fetching water, he thought that actually, Huo Yingjie caring for his father was acceptable too.
Once He Jingyu had washed up and changed into clean clothes, he joined his wife for a chat.
Huo Yingjie then accompanied He Tiantian in the kitchen, leaving space for his future in-laws.
"Yingjie really is better. Yingjie just told me about the wedding, what do you think?" Wang Shuping asked, noting that her daughter was already twenty, not a young age anymore.
Upon hearing that his daughter was getting married, He Jingyu felt a bit choked up.
"Should we wait a little longer?" He Jingyu reluctantly thought about waiting another year or two.
Wang Shuping naturally understood her husband’s reluctance and said, "Old He, you just came back from Yanjing, and mentioned that Tiantian waited hand and foot on Yingjie. The two of them, a young man and woman alone, you’re not worried?"
Moreover, now that Huo Yingjie has recovered, we don’t have anything to worry about, and it’s time to arrange the wedding for the children. Dragging it out any longer would put our daughter at a disadvantage."
"They surely wouldn’t cross the line, would they?" He Jingyu hesitated, though he often saw Yingjie gazing at his daughter, and he guessed that when he wasn’t looking, Yingjie had probably stolen many kisses.
He Jingyu, who had just found Huo Yingjie quite pleasant, now found him troublesome; this was about to take away the treasure he had cherished since childhood.
"At the height of passion, they’re young and full of vigor; who knows what could happen!" Wang Shuping muttered softly. "Don’t be too reluctant; it’s time for men to marry and women to wed. When Tiantian and I were this age, Tiantian was already born," Wang Shuping said.
